    I got the Sony 11mm F1.8 for my ZV-E10 before I sold so I could get the ZV-E1 and it works really well with the ZV-E1. Unless I turn really quickly, there is little to no vignetting with Dynamic Active on. Also, with just Active on, there's almost no vignetting using the Clear Image to zoom in slightly (1.2x) to help eliminate it. Good video. Thanks for the info.

    Not too sure about that 10-18 or the sigma 16, you start to get corner wobbling and image warping and all sorts. The dynamic stabe doesn't just crop in for fun, it uses that data when making the footage stable and if those edges are just black, it reduces the effectiveness.

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Před rokem +2

      Yes, of course... You're right, you run the risk of seeing vignetting while using APSC lenses. There is an obvious fix to that, which I didn't include because I wanted to show the original footage, but if you've ever played with Catalyst Browse, you can manually adjust the crop. Dynamic stabilization seems to work in the same manner: it's reading gyro data in real time, but it's using a fixed crop... So in post I may crop in an additional 4-10% to get past any darkened corners. Now, all of this may not be necessary for some who can afford Sony's full frame ultra wides, albeit the 16-35 or the 14 f1.8... or Sigma's new 14 f1.4 or the Viltrox 16 f1.8, to name a few. All of those would be recommended, but if you're on a budget, you already have those APSC lenses, or you want something more compact, those are options as well... And options that I have found useful. Again, I can understand that they won't be for everyone...
      Thanks for sharing your perspective!

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone Před rokem

      @@BrianCatalano I'm on a budget too but even with extra crop, the footage remains wobbly a bit like jello even once you remove the vignette.
      This is actually the reason I just ordered my ZV-E1, I got sick and tired of getting IBIS wobbles on Fuji, for example: czcams.com/video/YX7uYpV-rMc/video.html - which cannot be fully corrected in post. This thankfully doesn't happen on Sony (as long as you don't use APS-C lenses it seems) and there are some great choices like the 16mm Viltrox F1.8.

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Před rokem

      @@DigiDriftZone recently the zve1 (after this video was released) had an update that fixed some of the issues with dynamic stabilization, and I can say I don't see the warpy corners anymore (if I crop past the vignetting). I have a lot of Sony's and except for the fx3, I hated their stabilization, but compared to other brands found they have the less warp... And the zve1 is the best of the bunch. I initially wanted to get the Fuji xs20 but the stabilization was so bad in the corners, the video was unusable for me.
      That all being said, again you're right, full frame lenses will always be the way to go if you can get them and the viltrox is probably the best value lens! The only reason I haven't picked it up yet is for the weight. I probably will in the near future, but I have been traveling a lot lately and wanted compact lenses only. You may scoff at this choice (as I would have too), but it's been interesting to experiment with:
      czcams.com/video/R6K0Qf4IABk/video.html
      I see what you mean in the video you shared... you're right, and the warpiness always looks worse on blue skies, too!

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone Před rokem +1

      @@BrianCatalano That's really interesting about the warp. Yes, I just got back from the post office, dropped my X-S20 which is going back for a refund exactly for that reason (and the lacklustre autofocus in video). My ZVE1 should arrive second week of Aug :)
      I too value compactness a lot actually, I have the 15-45mm on my Fuji APS-C (I'm keeping the X-S10) which is great when I'm travelling light. It would be awesome to see a follow up video with the new firmware showing no more warp/wobble and a longer video of the final result with no vignette on that 11mm Sony.

    I have the Tamron 20-40mm on my A7R5, I wanted a second camera for the stabilisation. I mainly shoot video vertical these day for social media. Im trying to figure if I need the 11mm or it'll be to wide for reveal shots (interior and exterior) or I just could use the kit lens and swap my 20-40 over to the EVE1 when I need it. My problem is trying to visualise the distortion in vertical as I dont think I need to be as wide as horizon.

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Před měsícem

      That's a great but difficult question to answer as I think we all have different tolerances for what is acceptable with distortion. I have the Tamron 20-40, and it's now my favorite travel/street photography lens... Yet, if I'm shooting real estate I still always bring my 10-18 and will punch into about 13 or 14mm... And the distortion isn't great but it's also never been a deal breaker. I probably should invest in a better full frame ultra wide, but they are usually so expensive... So if I were you, I'd probably pick up the 11mm as I don't think you'll regret having a wider option on hand

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Před rokem +1

      Thank you, I really appreciate that, and that is a great question!
      Now, to compare these lenses with dynamic stabilization, which will add roughly 30% crop and you may still get vignetting on the 11mm (as it's an APSC lens), you could consider you are really comparing a 15mm f2.5 (the 11mm x 1.3) and you'll have minimal vignetting vs a 23mm f3.6 (as well as a full frame 18m f2.8).
      As a note, your fstop of 1.8 vs 2.8 doesn't change how much light the lens lets in, just the depth of field and compression (how blurry the background is) when cropped in...
      So the 11 is wider and faster, and even slightly smaller, but it is more expensive and not a full frame lens, so you will have some vignetting to crop around--and in higher frame rates, you will see a lot vignetting.
      The 18 is cheaper and a full frame, but that may be it'ys only real advantage especially if you will be in dynamic stabilization the whole time.
      Does all that make sense or did I confuse you more!?

Out of the lenses that I listed, the cheapest is the 28-60 kit lens is really sharp and compact. I guess it just depends on your budget and what you like to shoot.
      Some people don't mind shooting at 50mm or 35mm, so they may be ok with a prime. If I was mainly a photographer, I'd probably go with a zoom like a 24-70 f2.8.
      Does that make sense?

      Hello! Just to clarify, you mean the Sony ZV-1f and not ZV-E1? I know its confusing, but if you have a fixed lens ZV-1f, you cannot attach the Sigma 16mm or really any "real" lens to the camera as those lenses are for Sony e-mount (detachable lens cameras) whereas yours is attached. That being said, just as is, the 24 GM is fantastic! It's obviously expensive, so I'd also consider looking at Rokinon's 24 f1.8 (it's like $399 and great). But now I think I need an advice to make sure that I won't make a wrong decision as the camera is quite expensive for me; so the budget for the lens is pretty tight ;)
    I actually more a vertical video as I don't make content for youtube atm, all my clients ask for vertical vids including for my own content. Also I love to make a video of me in my studio while doing pilates and yoga in vertical shot most of the time.
    with all of those condition, is sony 20mm f/1.8 still the best option for me?

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Před rokem

      That's a difficult question as it's really hard to know what focal range you might end up liking the most for vertical videos or for shooting yourself doing pilates. I will say the 20mm can easily do all of that as it's wide enough for close spaces and works vertically well... And it's just a phenomenal lens! The only drawback is that it's expensive and maybe not wide enough if you are solely vlogging in dynamic active mode (which doesn't seem to be how you are using the camera)... Yet, then I would say you could look at the Samyang/Rokinon 18mm f2.8, as it is really cheap. However, it's less impressive, especially for client work. You could also consider Rokinon's 24 f1.8--which is fantastic and half the price of the 20. It's just hard to tell again if you will need something wider.
      Either way, I don't think you'd be disappointed with the 20, I have never heard anyone regret having it! Hope that helps...

    does f stop changes if we use apsc lens on full frame with dynamic stabilization?

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Před rokem +1

      Great question and not a simple answer!
      ...so from what I understand, the f stop of a lens is generally the same across any sensor size with regard to how many stops of light a lens will let it. An f1.4 APSC lens will allow the same amount of light in as an f1.4 full frame lens. However, in regards to depth of field and compression (blur in the background) an f1.4 APSC lens on a crop sensor or in crop mode will act more like an f2.1 lens because of the 1.5x crop... So with that logic, on the Sony ZV-E1 with dynamic active stabilization which crops in roughly 1.3x, an f1.4 will look more like an f1.8 lens while still allowing f1.4 stops of light in. Does that make sense?

      @@OtterXtra no worries at all, I appreciate you taking the time to come back and say that... and to remind me to also include less technical chat when discussing this stuff.
      As for lens options, it's really difficult to give a blanket best lens because I don't know what you like to film. All of these listed above are mostly for vlogging, so wide enough (18-24mm) to be able to flip the camera around and shoot your face.
      Some people only shoot others, and in that case people recommend prime lenses like a 35mm or a 50mm lens that is close to how our eyes see.
      Some people prefer zoom lenses like the kit lens, so a 24mm-70mm or a 24-105mm can do everything!
      The f stop is important for a few reasons. The smaller the number like an f1.4 or f1.8, the wider the opening of the iris of the lens, the more light can come in for shooting at night, also the more blurry the background will be, and the more expensive the lens!
      So my second lens that I bought was a Rokinon 24mm f2.8 which is wide and f2.8 is decent for low light and having a blurry background.
      All of the lenses mentioned in the video though work great in Auto!

      You are definitely right, the GoPro is a fantastic deal; compact, very affordable and stable!
      However, I don't think it's fair to the GoPro to try and compare a sub 1 inch action camera to a full frame sensor like this one... Especially since that sensor just shot a feature length IMAX film due to its image quality and lowlight capabilities. I love my GoPro for so many reasons, and I do think it's underrated as a vlogging camera! Yet, having real depth of field and being able to film in any lighting condition is not comparable... Again, though, for the money with their hypersmooth tech, the GoPro is a beast--and even more now that you get log shooting in 10bit color.
