How To Make Guyanese/Guyana Style Salara

    Ingredients:
    Dough:
    4 Cups - Plain Flour
    100g - Butter/ Margarine
    1 1/2 Tbs - Granulated White Sugar
    7g or 1 Packet - Yeast
    1/4 Tsp - Salt
    1 Tsp - Baking Powder
    Milk/ Water for mixing
    Filling:
    400g - Freshly Grated Coconut
    1 1/2 - Tbs Ground Cinnamon / Cinnamon Powder
    2 Tsp -Ground Mixed Spice
    1 Tsp - Ground Nutmeg
    1 1/2 Cups - Granulated White Sugar
    1 Tbs (15-30ml) - Vanilla Essence/Extract
    Red Food Colouring
    Salt (Optional)

    My father is guyanese, i dont get to see him often but every time he comes back to the states to visit he brings me coconuts, sugar cane, and different treats from Guyana and salara is always my favorite❤❤ now I can make it at home and feel kind of closer to him in a way thank you

    Very nice video! I remember as a little girl my dad and mom made this in guyana.., my little job was to brush sugar water on the red cake at the end! Thanks for mentioning you could put sugar water on it at the end... it's great! I will make this soon! Thanks

    For those persons who cannot use colouring like my grandson who loves salara but is allergic to food colouring I don't use colouring but I peel the brown skin and my only flavouring is almond extract. The coconut and sugar enhanced with almond is flavour enough

      You can but it will be a bit dryer... so I would suggest putting it on the stove with some sugar and a few drops of water to cook for a bit so the flakes don’t taste too dry

    They look beautiful but I always thought Guyanese salara was flat (like a layered flap) instead of rounded.
    When rounded, it's more like how it's done in other countries.

      Often time that is due to the layering process and some folks don’t put as much effort or sometimes the dough in the middle becomes soggy by the coconut so it doesn’t raise ... lol I am kinda of a perfectionist and I like to see the layered texture so that’s why I make them this way

      U can leave it out and just add a bit more cinnamon if you are using a sweet cinnamon

    Make the salara for the first time came out beautiful but notice it burns little at the bottom.any tips for next time

      Try baking at a lower temperature or put an oven proof dish with some water at the bottom of the oven. It should help
