    • @edteach3r

      If I may ask, why is it not a copy? I recently read a post on watchuseek that clearly identifies the Alpha as a knock-off as it blatantly copies (or endeavours to copy) the design of the Omega.... even the name “Alpha” is a rather poor attempt at riding on the back of “Omega”, it seems.
      As far as I understand it, homage watches pay homage to the original while incorporating elements of their own. There are various acknowledged homages, notably also by the Swatch group themselves. I only ask because I am new to watch collecting and am trying to avoid supporting unscrupulous companies. I love the Speedmaster but will never be able to afford one, so am in the market for a legit homage.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 4 lety +1

      It’s rather controversial Eddie and I think “copy” is probably not the best word... the distinction here is really between *replica/knockoff* vs *homage* . There is not doubt that the Alpha has “copied” multiple elements from Omega, but you clearly cannot try to pass this off as the real thing, hence in my book it is still “homage”.

      @edteach3r Před 4 lety +1

      I eat playdoh : Thank you for clarifying. I am just thinking, a fake Rolex may like a Rolex but clearly does not have a Rolex movement. Does that now not still make it a copy? I understand the Alpha looks quite different, but it is pushing theboundaries, in my opinion.

    The only things that matter here are performance, durability and value. Words like iconic, history and Omega written on the dial does not equal 25x the price. This coming from a guy who's owned 5 Speedmasters in my life. As I've gotten older and perhaps wiser, I will not pay current prices for high end Swiss watches.

About a month ago spoke with an AD and she gave me, seeing I wanted new, and no grey, the wining no coaxial I can pull off, she told me its excellent. While I don't want vintage,, I would consider a recently made model re-owned, clean and with all papers.

    This is why I love homage watches, it just gives you an inkling of a feeling of what it would be like to own the real deal. My grandfather left me a Rolex Sub 116610 and he also had a 16750 GMT master Pepsi(that one was sold to pay off their house) and I just love that these watches give you the ability to have fun with them! I swap the Rolie for my Invicta Pro Diver 8926OB depending on the day(I also modified mine to look more like my grandads sub) and value for money is just amazing with the nicer more clean looking Invicta’s. I’ve always wanted to try an Alpha watch out but surprisingly they are hard to come by second hand here in the states. Can’t wait to one day try one!

      This is why I love GOOD homage watches.
      With bad homage watches (like this Alpha), you don’t really get an idea at all. Well, I suppose if you get someone to take a photo of you from 10 feet away and you squint, you get a rough idea of how it looks like on a full length shot :)

    Good video and fair comparison. I have a 90s 42mm Speedy with Sapphire. I also have the Alpha and the lowly Pagani V3. Obviously there's no comparison to the quality. When using the crown or pushers, the Omega is 20 times better but for general use as a watch... I'm just not sure. I like the Seagull movement but I don't have the faith in it as I do the 1861. But an extra link for the Omega is almost as much as the Pagani. That is INSANE value! The bracelet on my Alpha wasn't as bad as yours though I wear it on a leather strap with a deployment. I wear the Pagani on a NATO. In my opinion, the Omega is #1, get tha Alpha and replace the bracelet if you want a mechanical chrono on the cheap or get the Pagani if you want the general look.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před rokem +1

      Well for more than 50x the price the Omega better bloody be #1 or someone needs to be sacked! 😂
      If you want a budget mechanical chronograph, I would not recommend the Alpha. There are plenty of watches using that Seagull movement (or a closely related movement) that are aesthetically better.

    It is Apple to Orange comparison. It is like comparing Rolex vs Tisell.
    But I do not agree with you on the value point. you gave 9 & 9, but it should be 25 for Alpha and 1 for Omega.
    Alpha : 68 -9 (taking out the value point) + 25 (adding 25 point value) = 84
    Omega : 94-9+1=86
    This is my calculation :+) ha ha ha

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety

      Apple vs Orange is not the same as Rolex vs Tisell... you should make up your mind. If you want to go with a 25 point value scale that's fine, but this is 10 point... and 1 for Omega assumes you're getting the same thing as the Alpha, which it is abundantly clear you are not...

    • @DavesWatchLove
      @DavesWatchLove Před 5 lety +2

      I get your point, Alex. Value is where affordable and luxury watch comparisons start to break down. The Alpha is a LOT of watch for $180. Enough that it makes the Speedy look terribly unreasonable and a terrible value. But compare the Speedy to the Daytona. Then the Speedy looks like tremendous value for money. in the end, I got a Speedy, not for monetary value, but for it's high personal value. It's a watch worth handing down to my kids, and they know it's history and their dad's love for the watch. An Alpha... they'd probably just give it away to Goodwill when I'm gone.

    • @bertkanne4572

      I have the Alpha. Other than the odd end lug design/dimensions I think it is the most amazing value. I do not understand how the 5k Omega gets away not having a sapphire crystal and the same w/r of the Alpha. Is this a case of tradition over modern technology?

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety +2

      The Omega is a historic piece... the water rating was not required for what it was purposed for, and there is actually a good reason behind the acrylic - NASA rejected anything with sapphire for risk of shattering in altered or zero gravity. Acrylic is far more difficult to break and will not shatter. If one wishes to have sapphire instead Omega does have a version with that and a display back too.

    Curious as to why Alpha didnt use the acrylic crystal? They use acrylic in the Paul Newman watch. I'm just not a fan of mineral crystal. I think the Speedy is a design classic. Unfortunately it's also a classic concerned certain technical aspects.
    Non hacking movement with 21600 bph. For me that's ok on a SKX for 200.- but not on a "professional moonwatch" going for 5K!
    I would at least expect it to be hacking. Also the Speedys used by Nasa in the 60s had a lemania based column wheel caliber. So the currently used cal. 1861 (cam lever) is not an uprade, but a downgrade IMHO. If you ask me Omega can't even say "it's the same watch that went to the moon 1969". It's just not. And it's not better than in the 60s. Besides the design aspect I don't see the value. Omega should update the movement. It's already not the same as that one that went to the moon. So at least make it a better one!
    I went to an AD this weekend just for fun. They are selling the "Saphire Sandwich" for close to 6000.- CHF ... which is just nuts!
    And then still ... I love the design ... :-)

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks for the detailed comment... you raise a lot of good points there. And yes I find the non-hacking nature a strange curiosity, but I guess NASA didn't stipulate that as a requirement (oddly!). And you're right the original caliber 321 was a column wheel movement. Omega later changed this up in the 861 successor (today's 1861 is essentially the same except with Rhodium)... as I recall in my reading the 321 was used in initial 1 or 2 missions, whilst the 861 was used in later moon missions. So yeah, it's not the watch that was first on the moon, but watches with the 861 did go to the moon AFAIK. As for upgrading the movement, well for those who want it there are of course plenty of Speedmasters with modern ones, e.g. the cal 9300 now used in quite a number of models. I reckon as long as this model continues to sell well (and no reason it wouldn't) Omega would be wise not to change it up too much.

      7rslender The 321 movement were in the pre moon watches. The caliber that went to the moon was the 861 which was a column wheel. The1861 is just a slightly modernized version of the 861.

      861 and 1861 are cam-lever actuated chronographs, NOT column wheel. The 321 was column wheel, and the info I can find indicates this was the caliber that was in the watches worn on the first moon landing in 1969.

Ultimately, value is a product of the labor and skill put into a thing, so similarly you have to wonder how a movement like the 1861 that undergoes close QC can be rated so closely to the ST19, which has a shocking defect rate precisely because it isn't QCed much if at all. A fairer assessment would be to rate the 1861 more like a 7 or 8 and the ST16 a 4 or 5, imo. That's not to denigrate the ST16, it is very attractive when new and finding a decorated chrono in a display caseback is shockingly hard. The next up from the ST16 is the 1863 as far as I can tell, and of course you're spending 20 times more, so I do appreciate it, I just think your comparison is a bit of a head scratcher. Also, giving Alpha a 4 for brand seems somewhat charitable considering its obscurity. What would 1, 2 and 3 be?

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 3 lety

      It's not hard to understand if you take the view that all marking can really only be relative, given that no one (or at least no one I know) has purview over the entire universe of wristwatches. The Lange L101.1 is 10/10 for you only until you come across something you consider better. In this context, these marks are best taken as relative between the two watches being compared. A two point spread between the movements is fair enough. As far brand, well I've heard of Alpha and what they do before I got this watch. A brand that makes a lousier range of watches and which I never heard of would get a lower mark. As would a brand which lies to or deceives customers.

This is a beautiful watch. I got mine with the 3 part Presidential bracelet. I have always liked that design. It is only lately that I have seen someone "Borrowing" that pattern as well as the Jubilee bracelet but it has been a lot more common. I do like the movement and manual wind. I have seen Omega moon on the moon watch for 3200 all over the place used. You are also talking Alpha under 200 VS about 3500 dollars on the grey market for the Omega. Depends what you want, the Alpha is affordable for just about anyone and the Omega is not. You really failed to be objective here. Terrible review and too low of a rating for the alpha in most categories. I actually much prefer the higher bezel design of the ass as it protects the protruding Crystal much better than that of the Omega. I will agree that the bracelet endlink being longer on the alpha changes the look of it on the wrist, but not at all how it sits on the wrist. The thick case back is what causes the watch to sit high on the wrist and both have thick case backs. The Omega just incorporates that think case back better by having a more aerodynamical geometry to the design. It's really a negligible difference though, and a 6 for the alpha is for lower than it deserves. I'd give it an 8 at least.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for your feedback Joshua. I think it's difficult to be completely objective in some of these areas where it's ultimately also quite subjective. You are right in that the overall case thicknesses here are of negligible difference, however my view is that it is predominantly the protrusion of the lugs (and the end link) that makes a MASSIVE difference in how it sits on the wrist... the Alpha sits awkwardly and "high" because of those protrusions - the maximal distance from the skin becomes the distal part of the that end-link. You gotta have these watches in hand to have seen that difference. Whether you give 6 or 7 or 8 for the case mark because of other factors, well that's where the subjectivity can come in.
      What other category do you think was too low for the Alpha?

The only thing Omega added to their chronograph that is on the Rodania is the 2 lume plots each side of the 12 o'clock marker. Which Omega already had on their field watches. Stowa were already using dots at the side of the 12 marker by 1939. Some designs converge out of necessity which is most likely what happened with the Rodiana and Speedmaster.

    I think display backs cheapen any watch. It's a fad that needs to go away.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety

      It can indeed cheapen things if done indiscriminately... I do think a column wheel chronograph movement is fair enough to display, and overall if done tastefully it can be a good thing. Think JLC Reverso :)
