- Terry Gilliam holds a special place in my heart since he made one of my favorite films, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. His unique style brings this amazing sci-fi film to life. very enjoyable and highly recommended!

This movie, which I love, is an example of a closed loop predestination time travel story. The past is set in stone, it is predestined to happen and nothing you can do can change it. Even if you are able to go back in time, no matter what you do to try to change things, the past is already written and you either have no effect, or your actions turn out to be part of the events that created the past as you know it.
The lady on the plane was one of the scientists. Thanks to James, they were able to locate where the virus was I in its purest form. They then sent the scientist back but she was only there to get a sample of the virus at its source, thus bringing it back to the present and hopefully they can manufacture a cure and humanity can once again live on the surface and begin to rebuild.
That's the closest to a happy ending this movie can get with the rules it set for itself.

This was probably one of the best time travel movies ever made. They pointed out, several times, that you can't change the past. And, as it turns out, all the things they thought they were doing that could change things, had already occurred, right down to James seeing himself get killed.
The scientist from future introduces herself as being "in insurance", a nice play on words for being the back-up to handle the virus spreader.
Ya she was gonna crash them plane to destroy the virus and the spreader, I saw this in theaters when I was like 13 and it keeps getting better every time I see it

@@FulciLives exactly, the scientists in the future needed a sample of the virus from the past in order to find a vaccine, cure in the future. Cole does succeed in that sense. He saved all the people in the future from eventually dying, possibly even the love of his life. She would of been about 70 years old and living somewhere under ground... I think that would of been a great ending credit scene. Madeline Stowe in aged makeup arriving at the beach they were going to escape too 30 years prior.

Gilliam was inspired to make this movie by a 1962 French short film called "La Jetée". It's only 28 minutes, and you can find the full version on CZcams, so definitely worth checking out imo. Thanks for the reaction/review!

actually it was Janet and David Peoples who wrote the screenplay based off La Jetee, Gilliam only liked the script and directed it according to his vision and the screenplay's
Hey Shan, great review and reaction to one of my all time favorite movies.
One running theory about this movie is that scientists actually figured out who spread the virus thanks to James' last call. The female scientist was on the plane was the future version of herself and she exposed herself to the virus in order to go back to the future and analyze the plague and find a cure.
Its not a theory the insurance lady did go back in time and stop him
12 Monkeys is a great movie and one of my favorites. Brad Pitt does crazy so well with all the twitching and hand movements. Even the way he talks.
If you like Terry Gilliam movies and have not seen it I would recommend Time Bandits. It's from 1981 and is typical Terry. Great reaction and review!

I saw Time Bandits in the theater with my family on vacation. LOVE that movie. Such a memorable film! I keep HOPING someone reacts to it. Brazil is also a fantastic and mesmerizing movie. I saw that for the first time while stoned in college. Both are some of my favorites.

The woman on the plane at the end was indeed one of the scientists from the future. So that gave the film a kinda sorta happy ending since it meant she was going to obtain a sample of the virus so they could cure it in the future. But Bruce Willis's character is stuck forever, seeing his own death, then experiencing it while his younger self sees it, again and again, a life that's turned in on itself. So depressing.
It's a bittersweet ending I think. although they have a cure for the future they couldn't prevent the virus's spread in the present
@@ShanWatchesMovies I think the folks in the future wanted the cure and they wanted control of the world. They didn't want to stop the virus from getting out in the first place.
Your assumptions are based on hope for female scientist being on a good side. What if she (is now)/was from the beginning on a dark side as well as that male scientist?
So happy to watch a reactor that is familiar with Gilliam react to this movie. I grew up watching Time Bandits, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Brazil. When this movie came out I was already familiar with his style so I was able to thoroughly enjoy it. One of my favorite Brad Pitt performances. Thank you for your reaction!
Two time travel movies I really enjoy are this and The Terminator, doing a great job of using time travel in a way that is satisfying without taking the easy way out of trying to change the past.

The Fisher King is an underrated Gilliam classic you should check out if you haven't already. Great performances by Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges.

Should have netted Robin Williams a Best Actor Oscar, but Silence of the Lambs came out the same year and Hopkins got it.

I've always been on the fence about "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", huge fan of the book (and most things H.S. Thompson), but "Brazil" and "Baron Munchausen", definitely yes!
The “Have a merry Christmas!” voice message James heard was indeed from Kathryn, but was so garbled you couldn’t tell it was her... unless you had the captions on, then it reads [Kathryn’s voice:] onscreen as an accidental spoiler.
The airport boarding pass lady is 'Honey Bunny' from Pulp Fiction, Amanda Plummer, daughter of Christopher Plummer who played Goynes Sr in this film.
I love this movie. Gilliam makes a beautiful but haunting depiction of the world and the future... an even better example is in his film Brazil, which I highly recommend.

Concur on Brazil. If you don't love it I'll eat a bug. You should track down Le Jette, acknowledged as the source of this movie. No self-respecting film student should leave home without it. Best. Leo.
I will be watching Brazil soon. And yes I own a copy of Le Jette, but it's been collecting dust for the past 5 years. I should really watch that too lol

@@ShanWatchesMovies The interesting thing about "Le Jette", is that it tells the whole story in still pictures.
The glance from Railey to the young James near the end is the most important event of the film. Without its effect on Cole the time travel project would not have succeeded. And did you notice that every example in Railey's lecture, including the guy who appeared in 14th-century England, was a time traveler? In the second scene, where Cole is chosen for volunteer duty, that character is seen being hauled up on a hook in the background. He also appears in Philadelphia as a street preacher quoting Revelations, saying "You're one of us!" The attention to detail is astounding and no one gets this film the first time through.

And dude that music is so dope, it's actually a reinterpretation of "Suite Punta del Este" from the great Astor Piazzolla !

I remember as a kid this being the movie where my Dad said to me "Y'know, Brad Pitt actually CAN act. REALLY well. He's not just a pretty-boy."
This was my exact reaction at the time
"Then, they took everything about me and put it into a computer where they created this model of my mind. Yes! Using that model they managed to generate every thought I could possibly have in the next, say, 10 years. Which they then filtered through a probability matrix of some kind to - to determine everything I was gonna do in that period. So you see, she knew I was gonna lead the Army of the Twelve Monkeys into the pages of history before it ever even occurred to me. She knows everything I'm ever gonna do before I know it myself. How's that?"🖕
Please, please, please react to "The Fisher King" by Terry Gilliam. It is his best film imo and the performances are incredible. Nobody ever talks about this film which was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including a win by Mercedes Rheul for Supporting Actress. It's my favorite performances by Robin Williams AND Jeff Bridges, and Michael Jeter's performance is one of my faves ever committed to celluloid.

This was the movie that made me notice Brad Pit as a real actor for the first time. Every word of his performance was memorized and in the script. He delivered them all like it was completely his own... crazy good performance.

Gilliam was one of my heroes growing up (largely for the films he made up until 12 Monkeys and his work with Monty Python), but Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas remains hard to swallow. Everyone involved in that movie really gave it their all, but it exists as a hollow carnival ride, and misses the real satire of Hunter Thompson's novel. Gilliam's best work (Time Bandits, Brazil, Fisher King) you can feel in the pit of your stomach.

One of Pitts best, but least known, performances.
Regarding the ending: I always suspects that Willis did save the day due to the fact that the communication got back to the future in time. That’s why the older lady from the Leaders from the future showed up in the plane at the end. The mission is about to be successful. At least they mitigated the damage.
Move suggestion: Amadeus. Some of the best acting out there. Both of the "lead" actors were nominated for their roles in the movie and I think you'd really enjoy it.
If you take requests, I'd recommend Kubrick's 2001, or, if you've already seen it, The Shining. His use of music in those films (especially 2001) is absolutely brilliant. And if you really want to keep on watching horror films, watch Cronenberg's The Fly. Holy crap.
Probably my favourite film of all time.
If you want Gilliam's best, you need to watch 'Brazil'...I would seriously LOVE to see your reactions to THAT one....;)
I should mention that I got a totally different interpretation of the ending, in that are under the impression that 'the virus is already spreading' (likely due to the scene where the character carrying the vials in the airport allows a guard to 'smell' the open vial) but I didn't see that as a moment when the virus was released, I think you have to do more then open a vial to release it, it has to be a contagion, to infect a water supply and be ingested, etc...the final scene of the woman seated next to the character with the vials on the plane indicates that the scientists in the future received Cole's message, and they sent HER back to STOP the guy from releasing the virus...thus, a possible, unseen happy outcome?
The film is based on the French film La Jetee, which is told in photographs. Pitt’s performance was nominated for the supporting Oscar but he didn’t win. Should’ve in my opinion, but he finally won last year for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood so well deserved.
I always forget Christopher Plummer is in this. Check him out in Beginners if you haven't, quite a great performance and a great movie.

I love this movie because even though our guy doesn't win, you can't change the past, the future was able to be saved.
My personal favorite Gilliam flick. I didn't get the impression that Pitt's father had anything at all to do with the release of the virus, other than that by discussing his plans to strengthen security around the virus he may have triggered the extremist to seize the moment and take action. I thought Pitt's character was a bit too cartoony, but I guess his antics add some energy and surreal humor to balance out the overall bleakness of the material. Which now that I think about it, is probably exactly the intent, given the cartoon sound effects coming from the TV during his ranting in the mental hospital.
You can't change history, even with time travel. I saw this movie shortly after it came out and it pretty much set in stone my beliefs in time travel. Even if you can travel to the past it doesn't matter. Time happens all at once and you can't change it.

Best line of the movie delivered by the female scientist on the plane who is from the future: "I'm in insurance." BOOM mind blown!! The whole point of the movie in one line. The future scientists have already cured the virus. They just want to make sure that the past happens to their likings because they are in charge in that dystopian future. So they are orchestrating EVERYTHING to the end of spreading of the virus.
Yes, that was the scientist on the plane next to him at the end. Remember, the point was never to stop the virus or the apocalypse, but to develop a vaccine so they could return to the surface. She was there to get a direct sample of the virus.
Pitt's performance is amazing!... However, it is so memorable that now, whenever I hear a woman gush over how hot Brad Pitt is, I can't help but think of him in this movie and go "This guy? Really?" LOL!

Not a big part, but the head doctor at the asylum is Frank Gorshin, who was probably most famous for his role as the Riddler in the old 60s Batman.

I agree, Terry Gilliam is the Bomb and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was amazing. I would highly reccomend watching The Fisher King if you haven't seen it.
Gilliam's film "Brazil" is my favourite of all time.
Cyberpunk at its finest 👌 one of my all time favorites. The Aesthetic and atmosphere is amazing.
I used to think the ending was very bleak but on rewatch, I like you, spotted the scientist from the future sat on the plane next to David Morse's character. So, although the virus gets out (and it was always going to happen cos Cole says that very thing - causality and all that), we can assume that the scientist gets hold of the virus from Morse and travels back to the future to help those who are still alive. Essentially, Cole's mission is a success even if he didn't have a direct hand in it.
Now it’s time for Gullium’s “Brazil” (long version, DO NOT WATCH the studio hatchet job).

Brazil was my favorite Gilliam flick until this movie came out.
Shan, somewhat surprised you taking Gilliam to task for not moving the film along quicker at the beginning by using more exposition. That's certainly a valid opinion and one I'm certain Gilliam considered. But he chose to go the 2001: A Space Odyssey route, who's pacing would also have quickened by an info-drop at the start. (For the longest time, Kubrick had an opening narration scripted that went unused. Worth a peek; it's probably online somewhere.) To put it more succinctly, both Gilliam and Kubrick chose the Show Don't Tell course. Best. Leo.
Gilliam is a great visual sorry teller and I just wished I would have gotten a little more exposition through the visuals. The future was so well made that I would have liked to seen some more world building! Still great film though!

If you watch alien 3 you should watch the special addition/assembly cut it adds about 30 minutes of cut content and is the much superior version

The assembly cut is the best, BUT the chestburster ending in the theatrical cut is essential. They should be combined.

One of the most important parts of the movie isn't the virus, the dystopian future, the time travel paradox, or even the story. There are three main themes, one of which is the obvious predestination paradox, but one most people missed is the concept, 'Do you _really_ know?" We claim to be experts. We have people who claim to know all sorts of answers, including our purpose in life, lack of purpose, or if we're the only life in the universe, or if anything matters (or not). And you want to know what? You don't know.
That's why Dr. Railly's emotional outburst, 'BUT I DON'T KNOW!' means so much. As much as a mortal person can be, she _is_ an expert in her field of study. And she is wrong. She had evidence right in front of her and her preconceptions clouded what was there. What makes her character heroic is that she admits her shortcomings and takes action to resolve them. Whether she did it right or wrong, whether she succeeded or not does not matter as much as the sad realization so many other people have access to the same facts, but then blindly shoved them away to keep on to their preset conclusion.
These words aren't left to condemn. Quite the contrary. Just like '12 Monkeys' actually ends on a message that there is hope in the future, perhaps we should all take some time to reconsider a lot of the preset conclusions we have for ourselves. _Do_ we really know what we 'know'?
Just for consideration.

They used the music for the film "Vertigo", also in the theater scene. Bernard Herrmann's score from Vertigo is one of the best ever written.
This is my second favorite time travel movie because there is no paradox to be resolved. I believe my favorite is Predestination, with Ethan Hawke.
You should also watch "Brazil". The best film of Terry Gilliam, imo.
I love Terry Gilliam! This is such a great movie. You definitely need to try _The City of Lost Children_ by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. Very reminiscent of Gilliam's style. It's also an incredibly unique and original story in a dark surreal world. I promise you won't be disappointed. The film is in French so you'll need to watch it with subtitles... the English dub version just isn't as good. It stars Ron Pearlman.

Saw this film when I was 7 years old with my dad on VHS and didn't know what it was about, then I realized it involved time travel and trying to stop a deadly virus from destroying humanity. Well, it's 2020, and yeah... Crazy!

Another great reaction. I really like this movie, but agree that the pacing isn't quite on-point in the first act which I think can cause some casual viewers to 'wander off' and then find themselves not understanding what's going on.

Me: "OK... I come from the year 2037. In the year 2020, a new virus appeared in some cities in China. Our scientists called it Coronavirus. There seemed to be no problem at first, but soon it started to grow in Europe and then the rest of the world. The politicians said not to worry, the pandemic would pass soon. But to date, scientists have been unable to find a cure. So they sent me back in time to find the original virus, hoping that scientists can find the vaccine."
The Doctors: "Give this man a tranquilizer and put him in a straitjacket."
Yeah! That would never happen!
During the character study for this role, Brad Pitt underwent psychiatric coaching under Dr. Laszlo Gyulai to develop institutionalized character's mannerisms. He spent so much time studying mental illnesses and behaviour ticks that he actually developed one and still has not been able to break it. Its his flippant hand use in front of his chest and he does it in every movie since this one. To get him into the role they'd take away his smokes on set making him tense and agitated (at his request).

Told you in the past. I absolutely LOVE the way you analize the films. Would you PLEASE review M. Night Shyamalan's - THE SIXTH SENSE - ? .... I guarantee it will blow your mind BUT I won't say a word why. Can't wait for your follow up to Silence of the Lambs with HANNIBAL. I lloved it as much but many couldn't get over the fact that Jodie Foster was replaced because she refused to do a sequel. I for one can not wait to see what you think about it. THANKS ..!

This movie has been sticking to my mind. The virus is being spreading. That guy carrying the trunk of the virus looks something that represents one of my prejudices.
On the ending: i believe thats the scientist and she saved the future. But i like that its not exactly said for sure so it leaves it up to interpretation. But i disagree with you on bruce willis acting like McLean. Imo this is bruce's most unique acting job, however, he has limited range and i think this movie demonstrates a new side of willis i really enjoyed
If you like Gilliam, and you haven't seen it, please, please, please, react to Brazil (whichever version you like, but the 140 min International Cut is probably best). I have never seen anyone react to it. I think it's some of Gilliam's best work (although I'm a particular fan of the Fisher King and Life of Brian, as well).

I love this movie. I have seen it at least 10 times. I'm still not clear on the voice that called him "Bob" and who he was. The lady next to David Morse at the end sure looked like the scientist but that left another question for me. Have you seen "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"? (The Finch one) Great movie.

I was always under the impression that the kid in the airport was actually Bruce Willis' character, witnessing his own death. The film is so confusing, that even after seeing multiple reviews of the film and couple views myself of the actual film, I still not absolutely sure. Maybe it is a mark of good film making, to keep the audience guessing, or I am just too dumb to figure out this movie.
It's funny how you said you enjoy a serious Bruce Willis when an other youtube reactor said he didnt know Bruce Willis could be a comic actor after watching the 5th element.
Bruce Willis is a jack of all trades! But I wouldn't consider him a master of any. Still, a great actor with a lot of versatility!
Heehee I first knew him for comedy, in his role as David Addison in TV's "Moonlighting."
Great review. You say nothing changes in the end and the virus still spreads, but we clearly see the female scientist from the future sitting next to the virus guy on the plane. She seems to be the exact same age as she was in the future, so doesn't it imply that she herself has been sent back to stop him, based on intel from Cole and the other time travelers? That's how I interpreted it anyway
