    Great video Brian! I've been brewing for a few years and just starting to use Brewfather with my cobbled together propane/RIMS system which uses the 20 gallon Spike basket. So your video was super useful to guide me how to initially configure my system profile in Brewfather. Thank you!

    With your grain water absorb amount. If people like me are using a custom basket and a press plate to get a lot of the water absorbed and sugars out. How would we take that into account?

      Yes!! Do the actual measurements and you'll be good to go.. do you tilt the kettle? There is a lot left behind on the 10 gallon version if I don't. The outlet is pretty high up and with no dip tube... 👍🍻

      Short Circuited Brewers haven’t used my new system yet. My brew shed is coming next week, then I’m bringing in an electrician and plumber...just thinking ahead with what I need to do. I can’t wait though.

    Your videos are really helpful. I have always been wondering what i need to do when i have a smaller kettle and a bigger fermenter which forces me to mash and boil several times to fill my fermenter. What do i select for batch volume target? I have 100L kettle and 300L fermenter.

      If you have to split the batch I would just suggest that you determine what your target volume is for your fermenter and then divide that by two and use whatever that number is for your batch volume.

      @@ShortCircuitedBrewers I think would have been ideally if they develop something to track the brewhouse batches separately from the target fermenter volume. I appreciate your prompt response.

    Hey Brian, have you (could you) share your HERMS system profile? I'm doing test runs on my new HERMS system now and prepping for the first brew day and would love to compare how I set mine up versus yours. I copied a lot of info from the Beersmith Blichmann HERMS setup that was shared within the software.
    Side note, it looks like the link for your hoses was copied twice into the Keg Washer spot within the video info.

    Hi, did you really had 70% on mash efficiency using around 10% of special malts? Did you measure pre boil volume and gravity to check?

    Thanks for another brilliant video Brian! I wonder if there is a way to update my equipment profile automatically based on the measured values (e.g. volumes, losses, efficiencies) in my batch record, or is it a case of inputting the recorded batch values manually?

      Yes you can after you have him put all of your measurements there's a button that says adjusted in the brewing section of the recipe when you click that button it opens the recipe adjusted for the measurements that you just took as well as the adjusted equipment profile based on the measurements that you just took. It won't save anything until you actually copy the equipment profile into your equipment profiles. But that is the way that you can utilize the input information to have an adjusted equipment profile without having to enter everything.

    Thanks for the video. There are guys on that are having a pretty big mash efficiency issue on the solo, including me. Any advice? I have not been able to break 65% mash efficiency and most times it's in the low 60's. I've tried all manner of things from crush, stirring the mash, etc. Starting to think it's equipment profile at this point. Any advice?

    Good video Brian! Quick question. If someone had an all one brewing system and produced different batch sizes, lets say 5 gallon and 10 gallon would they need to adjust the criteria for mash deadspace loss in the equipment profile? Would they also need to adjust their mash and brewhouse efficiencies? Finally do different size systems take a 10 gallon vs 15 vs 20 gallon have different deadspace loss and efficiences?

      Yeah I don't think any equipment profile should be really set in stone you would adjust the Dead space depending on the batch size with that system or any all-in-one system depending on how the dead space is in the actual system. Efficiencies may need to be adjusted as well depending on how close you are to the maximum grain bill.

      @@ShortCircuitedBrewers I gotcha but when I was experimenting i.e putting different numbers for mash-tun deadspace nothing seemed to change in regard to water requirment, or the grain to water ratio. I am little confused. If one uses a BIAB will mashtun deadspace not matter?

      The requirements won't change just the thickness of the mash.

    There are some comments around mash tun dead space when profiling the kettle. I understand what the measurement is, but why is it important? I am assuming the composition of the liquid phase is relatively homogeneous, i.e., it is the same or very similar above and below the basket so why is it needed? Maybe there is a difference above and below the basket?

      The dead space is important because the liquid in that space cannot be "absorbed" by the grain and must be accounted for in the total water volume needed for mashing. You need a certain water to grain ratio for the mash and if the water below the basket, false bottom, etc. is not in contact with the grain it cannot be part of that water to grain ratio calculation.

      @@ShortCircuitedBrewers I see your point, but what if you have a system that recirculates and draws wort from below the basket? In that event would you enter a dead space value of zero? Thanks in advance. I am setting up my Spike 15 with a Wort Hog EBC-130 and a Clawhammer spray valve in the lid presently. I am trying to get this mostly dialed in from the start. Jim

    Is it possible the email or text questions? I am fairly new to brewing and actually pieced together a10G Solo setup but for gas. I like the app but not understanding a couple things it’s telling me as far as water volumes.

    Thank you for the video! In the "mash tun dead space" (volume of recoverable liquid not in direct contact with the grain), where you have 3.5g, how come you've decided not to include the volume up along the sides as well as shown here (spikebrewing.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/35000161408-spike-solo-system-dead-space)? They have a volume upwards of 7g here.

      I should also note that the Spike 20g Solo BeerSmith profile has a default value of zero here... so I guess your value of just the liquid below the very bottom of the basket is a happy medium. The volume up along the sides will also change every brew depending on the overall volume in there.

      I honestly didn't think about the dead space along side the basket. I am used to cylindrical baskets... lol I would say it is negligible.

    "Water is approximately 8.34 pounds per gallon". When are you going to stop using those archaic measurements. One liter of water weighs exactly 1 kilogram. It freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius. How simpel can it be.
