The song was originally written and recorded by American singer/songwriter Jake Holmes. The members of The Yardbirds seen here are Keith Relf on vocals/harmonica, Chris Dreja on bass, Jim McCarty on drums, and Jimmy. The Yardbirds was the start for Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck (who, for a brief time was "co-lead" with Jimmy), and Jimmy. The Yardbirds started in 1963 and went through July 1968 and what would become Led Zeppelin had their first rehearsal on August 12, 1968. Jimmy had been using a bow on his guitar since his session musician days when suggested by violinist David McCallum. It's true, this version doesn't hold a candle to Zep's but music was turning towards a different sound - a sound Jimmy heard and channeled into Zep.

Jake Homes originally wrote the song "Dazed and Confused" in 1967. The Yardbirds along with Jimmy Page did a cover version of the song in 1967. Jimmy Page was the founder of Led Zeppelin, so when the Yardbird's disbanded in 1968, Page started the band Led Zeppelin and also re-covered the song with his new group for the Led Zeppelin debut album in 1969.

    • @joeking6763

@@gregcable3250 Correct! Here's the rest of the story - the band were forced to change their name after Dreja issued a cease and desist letter, stating that Page was allowed to use the New Yardbirds moniker for the Scandinavian dates only. One account of how the new band's name was chosen held that Keith Moon and John Entwistle had suggested that a supergroup with Page and Beck would go down like a "lead balloon", an idiom for being very unsuccessful or unpopular. The group dropped the 'a' in lead at the suggestion of Peter Grant, so that those unfamiliar with the term would not pronounce it "leed". The word "balloon" was replaced by "zeppelin", a word which, according to music journalist Keith Shadwick, brought "the perfect combination of heavy and light, combustibility and grace" to Page's mind.

Eric Clapton was original lead guitar from '63-'65, Paul Samwell-Smith was original bass until '66. When Eric left, he was replaced by Jeff Beck. When Paul Samwell-Smith left, he was replaced by Jimmy Page. When Jeff Beck left in late '66, He was replaced on lead guitar by Jimmy Page. When the rest of the band left Jimmy in the lurch for a tour in '68, he and their manager formed a new lineup (Page, Plant, JPJ and Bonham) and called them The New Yardbirds for the tour. They changed their name to Led Zeppelin when they entered the studio to work on a new album.

The British invasion band 'The Yardbirds' appeared in the psychological mystery movie "Blow Up" internationally released back in 1966/1967. Guitarist Jeff Beck is angered by the buzz/static in his amplifier, and he bust up his guitar and throws the neck of the guitar into the audience on the dance floor, while 'The Yardbirds' were performing their version of "Train Kept-A-Rollin'" renamed "Stroll On" in the film. In 1968, I was an American student living in London. In October I went to see "The New Yardbirds" at the Marquee club. I remember being underwhelmed by the performance. I thought the singer was too "screechie." The drummer was too loud. Overall, I felt they were trying to hard to be "Bluesy." When the band changed the name to Led Zeppelin, I laughed at such a dumb name. I didn't think much of their debut album. Again, trying to be too "Bluesy." It wasn't until hearing LZii did I recognize the greatness of this band. They eventually became my favorite rock band. Better late than never.

This band was formed in 1963 which had Jimmy Page.
Two Yardbirds lineups from 2005 (top) and 2010 (bottom)
The Yardbirds are an English blues rock band from London. Formed in May 1963, the group originally included lead vocalist Keith Relf, lead guitarist Anthony "Top" Topham, rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith, and drummer Jim McCarty.[1] In October, Topham was replaced by Eric Clapton.[2] He remained until 13 March 1965, when he left due to creative disagreements.[3] Clapton recommended Jimmy Page to replace him, but he declined and Jeff Beck took over.[4] Page later joined on bass the following June, after Samwell-Smith abruptly quit; Dreja later took over the role, allowing Page to join Beck on guitar.[5] This lineup was short-lived, however, as Beck left in November 1966.[6] The group continued as a four-piece until July 1968, when Relf and McCarty left due to creative differences, primarily with Page.[7] Dreja initially remained, but by August, Page formed a new group with vocalist Robert Plant, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham, who later renamed themselves Led Zeppelin.[8]

Zeppelin started out as The New Yardbirds. Keith Moon told them they'd go over like a lead zeppelin. Thus the name change. Keith and Jim moved onto form the original Renaissance with the pianist of the Nashville Teens and a classically trained bassist. I met Jim a few years back. We talked drumming. Keith unfortunately electrocuted himself in his home studio in the late 70's. The bassist became a photographer. He did the early Zeppelin photos. This was a cover. They didn't write it. The Yardbirds were huge. Eric Clapton was replaced by Jeff Beck. Technically Plant didn't sing it the same.

Thank you for knowing about and mentioning Renaissance. The later Renaissance with Annie Haslam as the vocalist was one of my favorites (and I think she's still performing today) and they actually evolved from the Renaissance with Keith Relf and Jim McCarty. You might want to edit your comment to include their last names, because you first referred to Keith Moon, but then mentioned "Keith and Jim" without noting it was a different Keith.

Keith Moon told them they would go over like a lead balloon. Jimmy changed lead to led, so lead would not be mispronounced "leed", and changed balloon to zeppelin. He said it was the perfect name to describe both the light and heaviness, light and shade, of their sound. Incorporating pictures of the Hindenburg zeppelin disaster in their branding was genius.

They rotated through Great guitarists 1st Clapton, who left to form the super group Cream, Jeff Beck who left to form the Jeff Beck Group, then Jimmy Page who originally joined as the bass player then switched to lead guitar after a few gigs and played alongside Beck until Beck left.

Heyy all, I want to try to answer the questions as best as possible so these gentlemen can begin the Yardbirds journey. The band was always known as the "5 live yardbirds" With their first guitarist being Top Topham who left the band early on because of his age. Eric Clapton was brought in and they performed mostly blues classics and he left immediately after they recorded their hit single For Your Love. They then had Jeff Beck take on the job, at first doing Clapton bits, but being a far more innovative guitarist, they moved on. The band had always consisted of Keith Relf vocals/Harmonica, Jim McCarty Drums, Chris Dreja rhythm guitar and Paul Samuel Smith on Bass. During a gig with Jeff Beck on guitar, Jimmy Page was there to watch his mat Jeff play with his band. Keith had been drinking, and was being sloppy and took a header off the stage, Smith said "I quit" and left leaving his equipment behind. Jimmy Page to that point had been one of the most successful sessions guitarists in England, playing on 70% of music released at the time. Beck asked if he could help out and fill on bass for upcoming gigs, and Page joined the group. He and Beck had literally grown up together playing guitar off of each other's experiences. Page played bass, but then ideas of 2 leads came up and Chris Dreja moved to Bass, and Page took the 2nd guitar spot. This could have been the start of a super group, but Jeff's relationship with model/ actress mary Hughes became an interference and Beck missed several shows, and the band released him. Page took over with their first album together as Page being the lead and author of sever songs "Little Games". There is a ton of music out there, Keith and McCarty went on to Renaissance
    With Keith's sister Jane, and then Keith moved on to Armageddon, a single album cut short by Keith's death. This is personally in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. I recommend taking the journey and hearing how one song in particular evolved with each player- "I'm a Man" (cover) As mentioned in the comments here jake Holmes wrote Dazed and Confused, and Page and McCarty had gone to see his show, and both picked up the album, decided to re-work it and play it live. Many versions of the song are out there as well. I will give a link to Armageddon;

One of the most important bands of all time that started as a pure blues band with Eric Clapton, went more progressive with Jeff Beck and then psychedelic with Jimi Page. Actually Eric was suggesting Page as his replacement but he was busy as a session musician, so Jeff stepped in, later Page joined as well and then Beck left, leaving Page as the sole guitarist. When they disbanded he tried to revive the group with a new singer and rhythm section and named it New Yardbirds. After their first tour they renamed themselves again (some say it was John Entwistle, other that it was Keith Moon his new project will go down like a lead balloon)... Let Zeppelin!

This song evolved from the Jane Holmes original to what the Yardbirds did with and then Jimmy Page brought it with him to Led Zeppelin to finalize the studio classic. It further evolved each time they did it live as Jimmy expanded the mid improv section with the violin bow and also the killer high energy guitar solo that followed. A great song for Led Zeppelin and one of my favorites by them. They sure made it their own.
Keith Relf is a legend on vocals for the Yardbirds, not as good as Plant for sure but he sang a bunch of hits for inarguably one of the most influential bands ever with Eric Clapton, then Jeff Beck and finally Jimmy Page on guitar. The got ultimate respect from the entire Rock Community for laying the groundwork for all rock to come, they are included with the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the WHO and the Kinks as the mid 60s bands who most influenced Rock music as it progressed through the 60s & into the 70s. The Yardbirds started in 1963 w/ Eric Clapton on guitar as an electric blues band... When The Yardbirds wanted to make more commercial music, Clapton quit the band ... Jeff Beck joined on guitar in 1965 and he asked his friend Jimmy Page to join on bass... But Jeff Beck behaved erratically and missed gigs, so Jimmy Page moved up to guitar by 1967 and he brought in manager Peter Grant who helped the Yardbirds collect their dues.
But despite The Yardbirds rising popularity, singer Keith Relf and drummer Jim McCarty were exhausted and quit the band in 1968... There was a dispute over their finances and Peter Grant sat them down and demanded that the rights to The Yardbirds name be signed over to Jimmy Page... Despite starting a new band as 'The New Yardbirds' after Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones joined Jimmy Page, there were legal issues (departing bassist Chris Dreja had the rights to the Yardbirds name and was out of the band) and they decided to change the name to Led Zeppelin and start fresh in 1968.
Keith Relf died in 1976 from an electrocution in his home basement.
Drummer Jim McCarty years later admitted that he and Relf were "petered out" from 3 years of actively touring and felt that The Yardbirds' best years were done creatively... He and Relf left to form a new band Renaissance. And they watched from a distance as Jimmy Page & Led Zeppelin exploded in popularity in 1969...

The Yardbirds were formed in 1963 and took over the residency spot at The Crawdaddy after The Rolling Stones went on to play theaters. The original formation was Keith Relf-vocals, harmonica & hand percussion's (tambourine and the like); Chris Dreja-rhythm guitar; Paul-Samwell Smith-bass; Jim McCarty-drums and Eric Clapton on lead guitar. The band were very inspired by The Stones and played r&b and blues with a rock 'n roll edge. By March 1965, Clapton who was a purist at this point, thought The Yardbirds was turning pop commercial and left the band. Through their manager they contacted Jimmy Page who was then a studio musician unknown to the general public but well known in the business. He declined the offer but suggested his friend Jeff Beck. So Jeff Beck took over from early 1965 and stayed for little over a year before he was asked to leave. It's an involved story that I'm not getting into now. Mid 1966, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith, who was already producing Yardbirds records, decided he no longer wanted to tour and left the band to work exclusively as a producer. Coincidentally, Jimmy Page was getting tired of studio life and was willing to join a band and offered himself to the Yardbirds. So Chris Dreja took over bass duties and The Yardbirds began a short lasting duo lead guitar phase which ended with Beck having a hissy fit on tour which lead to his expulsion. The Yardbirds therefore from mid-to-late 1966 til July 1968 became the band you see on this video: Keith Relf-vocals, harmonica & light perc.; Jimmy Page-guitar; Chris Dreja--bass; Jim McCarty-drums. After the band called it quits, Chris Dreja became a professional photographer, Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin, while Jim McCarty and Keith Relf formed Renaissance, another very important band of the 70s although both men left by the time the band became relevant.

This video demonstrates more than anything exactly what Plant, Jones, and Bonzo brought to the mighty Zeppelin. Basically, everything that Jimmy couldn't do by himself.
P.S. Now you know why Page went out and recruited a singer, bass player, and drummer.

I've gotta say, Jim McCarty did a bloody good job on drums on this, man. Damn! Keith Relf was quite the frontman, but he had chronic asthma. The Yardbirds were groundbreaking and massively influential. I mean, actually, possibly more so than Zeppelin.

The Yardbirds became Led Zeppelin. Jimmy was the last remaining member of the group and brought in JPJ, whom he worked with during studio days. He looked for a new singer and saw Robert Plant, who then recommended John Bonham. They were called the New Yardbirds and later changed to Led Zeppelin. The Yardbirds played this song live only and never put it on an album. This was part of the reason for their breakup. Jimmy was pushing the group to move to a new harder and more experimental sound. Listen to some 1967 concert bootlegs of Yardbirds, and you will see they sound different than their albums. Jimmy was already forming the Zeppelin sound before he selected his soon to be legendary band mate's.

Relf's delivery is such that he seems like he's reading the lyrics. I had never heard this version. The Yardbirds had a couple of hits in the sixties - "Shapes of Things" comes to mind. They were a "training ground" for some guitar greats. Their sound like other bands of the period that leaned heavily on psychedelia seemed very avant garde back in the day.

All those guys left the Yardbirds, Jimmy was the only one left, & there were 6 gigs that still needed to be performed. Jimmy had like 2 weeks to get another band together, & he picked the greatest geniuses for that band. Jimmy wasn’t in the Yardbirds the whole time, I’m not sure when he joined them. Jimmy did his thing in this version, otherwise this would have been even worse then it was. Led Zeppelin were only together about 2 months, first rehearsal was on August 19,1968, did the 6 gigs as tThe New Yardbirds. Recorded their first album in October, in 4 days & a total of 35 hours. That 35 hours also included mixing & editing by Jimmy & engineer, & was released in the US on January 12,1969. My understanding Jimmy reconfigured the song for the Yardbirds, the again for Led Zeppelin. This video is proof not all musicians are The GODS of MUSIC like Led Zeppelin, though the Yardbirds were pretty popular. Jimmy is definitely a musical genius, there is NO DOUBT about that.

Page, Beck and Clapton were all part of the Yardbirds, at one point of another, pre-Zepplin. This was a Jake Holmes song (UK musician). Jimmy knicked it, for both the Yardbirds and Zep :) The influence of the Yardbirds on the music scene can not be overstated. If recalling correctly, Led Zepplin were at first going to call themselves the New Yardbids. Keith Relf was the singer, who went on to other things, after the Yardbids broke up, including Armageddon (highly recommended). This was not a hit for the Yardbirds, but they had several other, highly revered other singles, where Relf shines.

Page kind of the took control of the band, eventually blew it up after maybe 18 months(?), and hired Plant, Jones, Bonham and toured very briefly as the "New Yardbirds" due to contract obligations before renaming the band Led Zeppelin (the lore in my old man brain at least). as they say the rest is history.
