In this video I review my 2017 KTM 300 XCW ( EXC ) 2 stroke. Compare the 2017 to the 2018 KTM 300 XCW. And also talk about TPI 2 stroke fuel injection vs CARB
For me is the carburetor better for hard enduro like slippery stones, logs, wet ground...with carburetor you can smoother ride and engine is more elastic. So the tpi version is more like 4t, it’s to strong from down and you can’t play with clutch, everything is on throttle on tpi. So its more for higher speeds tracks like motocross. I had tpi 300 now i am back on 300 carburator 😁 carb and tpi is an huge difference.
I wish I could get a test ride on one here in the states.. I just received word we are getting it for 2019. Was gona start saving up. But unsure now. Aside from the hella rich bottom end, I absolutely love my 300 carb. Bast Bike I have ridden to this date.
Thanks. Not enough tpi reviews. I have a question. I..used..to ride really hard. I destroyed my engine. Unfortunately I don’t have much land to ride so it’s tracks or asphalt. I ride harder than anyone I’ve crossed. No bs. Unfortunately I will spend the majority of my riding on the road, although motocross is my love. I’ve seen some reviews suggesting the 250 is better than the 300 for aggressive riders. I feel the 500 is the right choice but I can’t afford the maintenance and 2 strokes are fun..off road. Considering a good portion of my time will be spent on asphalt, some tracks, and backyards, would you recommend the 250tpi, 300tpi, or 500?
Just a quick tip with the gas cap. Instead of pushing down the button to get the cap off, push the vent hose down on the cap and turn. Then it works a charm.
2 strokes love the wet flow nature of a Carb. It injects fuel before the transfer port. This allows the gas/oil mixture to travel through the transfer port, wick out heat, promote lubrication, and by the time it reaches the cylinder has atomized well. TPI injects directly into the cylinder. On a 2 stroke it doesn’t give the mixture time to atomize, runs super lean and hot, and therefore stresses the motor. Cats been out of the bag for years now. There’s a reason GET ECU offered a relocation kit and there’s a reason KTM switched to TBI, cuz it’s essentially an electronic carburetor. 2017 KTM 300 XC forever….
There are some concerns with the new TPI two strokes, but I don't think reliability will be one of them. KTM fuel injection is a tried & true technology. The new TPI machines will be heavier & cost more. They will get fantastic MPG like their four stroke counterparts. The TPI machines will use regular premium gas like a four stroke; the computer mixes the oil for you from a separate tank. The oil to gas ratio is high enough that the separate oil tank will last more tankfuls than a professional enduro rider would go through in day. I concur that the current two stroke 300s have a lot to offer "as is", they are amazing, bar none.
Those who have acutally driven the KTM with TPI say fuel consumption is only 10 - 20% less and you can actually get same or better results by jetting the carburettor ones (would not as melted piston when it runs to lean is not fun, been there done that on a snomobile)...
Love this vid, just upgraded from wr250r to a 300 xcw. 300 has more pull in 2nd than the wr in 1st and I got the wr geared down pretty far. Went with the carb as well, got a leftover 2018 which makes it about $2k less than what I would have had to spend for a 2019 TPI if I could find one. If I were a racer and had people all around and someone to give me a lift if I broke down, etc, sure TPI all the way, but adding a fuel pump, oil pump, injectors, sensors, etc, then needing to have some type of jump battery incase of battery failure, it's just not as attractive in the woods by myself. Was always worried about that with the WR. If the WR stalled, I would have to flip the kill switch off and on and let the fuel pump prime before it would start again
Heads up, There will be a delay in my next video of approx 10 days. The Grey bush Group is taking a big trip to A 12 mile single track loop / Riding club. That means a A LOT of New never seen before trail footage. Does anyone have a topic Request?
Have you ever ridden an older model 2 stroke? Something like a 2002+ Cr250 or rm250 that is built out? It would be cool to have you compare something like that that is built with all the cool bits and such and compare it to these new ktms. I personally believe a built early 2000s 2 stroke can be just as good as these new KTMs. Would be cool to hear your opinion.
Oh yea, Deplorable Moto has an 02-03 RM250 that is built. And it RIPS! I would have to agree with you also. The thing about the KTM's is they come stock off the show room floor with all the bling an goodies. But you can just as easily Build an older model up. Just look at the 2017 Red bull straight rhythm. Ronnie Mac took 2nd place on a 98 cr250. Ill see if we can do a video were I swap bikes with Deplorable.
Your absolutely right about the KTMs being fantastic off the showroom. A large percentage of woods races now a days are on the KTMs and rightfully so. I just think people largely overlook the older bikes. You can pick them up cheap and parts are relatively inexpensive. I have an 03 cr250 that has the lectron carb, suspension done, gearing and oversized breaks and I put it up against any of these modern bikes. That would be a great video though love the content man! Thanks!!
I was riding a 1981 yz250 in preparation before I got this bike (2016 300xc) and I built that motors top end nice and put a dg pipe on it, good tires and a basic front fork rebuild and I flew on that thing, left all my friends in the dust on open ground, and it was nimble in the woods too, as long as it wasn't too tight and windy. I don't know for certain but it definitely feels lighter and more nimble than these 300xc. Going to the newer 300xc with the 4cs front fork was a huge let down, and now, in an attempt to save everything that's right about that 300xc I'm doing the dal soggio ray kit ($550), otherwise I'd swap that front fork or ditch the bike entirely. I'm guessing since this guy loves it that they probably fixed whatever was screwed up with the 4cs, or he's just one of the few that actually like it. All I know is that it's not working for my riding style, and it's not going to be easy to get it there. Other than that, I love most everything else about this bike, like he says, lots of low-end torque, so much that I hardly have to ride on the crappy front fork. Also have to agree about the bit about the tires, I ran new at81 front and rear (the same as the stock tires) and for me, I find they're not tractionable enough, and all that torque just rips that rear tire loose and it gets sideways real quick. So even though it's torquey, you can't just lug it up hills.
just got one myself and only have one ride but totally agree - what a fun ride! The bike does feel so lightweight compared to my FE350.. and I do think about it all the time lol..
I was looking for a 2T and had hope for the 300tpi but as it isn't offered in NA I'll just skip it and keep my 500exc for all my riding. In a couple years other makers will offer FI and KTM will maybe have missed an opportunity. As for FI reliability my 500 has 14,000km 300hrs of off road use in rallies and just riding everything from sand, mud to rocks and roots. Nothing but oil and filter changes and check the valves which haven't moved since the first break in inspection. Pretty reliable technology.
Fellow EXC rider and I'll second the FI reliability of these bikes. 2016 500 EXC with about 270 hours, no engine maintenance besides oil and filters. Valves won't budge, starts and runs fine, and not burning any oil so I'm convinced I can wait a little while to do a rebuild.
Hey have you ridden the 500exc, if so, which one would you say pulls the hardest and would be quicker in wide open trails like you drove in this video? I’ve had a 530(carb) and a 500(EFI) and want to buy another ktm soon but I have never driven a 300 2T. What’s your opinion, thx
My buddy TJ has a 500, the 300 does not have the torque the 500 has. But the top end on the 300 makes up for it. Honestly they are night and day different in power delivery, but lined up mod for mod. They would be very close in a straight line. But then the 300 takes the win in the woods, tight stuff.
I wanted to know the exact same thing, thinking of bying a KTM 4 stroke 500 but I have heard so much good about the 2 stroke 300 that I am reconsidering. I used to have a 2007 Yamaha WR450, real fun bike but a bit to snappy on the throttle and heavy for the slow technical offroad parts :)
So how does tuning go on a TPI bike? If you want to make any fuelling changes it's a $700 bill to buy a new ecu from vortex to tune my 350exc-f. I miss the good ol days when you could just toss a couple new jets in and turn your mixture screw...
Gladius Jon Emissions regulations have clauses built into them that mandate manufacturers take increasingly extensive measures to make their fuel systems "tamper proof". I'm not sure what they are for off road bikes, because the regulations are arduous to read through.
hey mate, thinking about buying on of these, im just wondering about your fuel. What size tank do you have and how long does that last? What ratio's are you running as well please.
Hey Gladius, this is gonna be kinda weird but...... I am glad you stopped smoking because you have a great voice for videos. I picture you on the radio or something lmaoo. Hey dude what state are you in? I live in Ga but there is not a whole lot of single track to ride here you have a ton of trails! How far do you have/willing to truck your bike on a weekend? Not a planned trip but like a "I want to get out and ride tomorrow" kind of trip. I sold my yz and now the dirt bike itch is back. Street bikes just don't excite me or bring out that 13 yr old me out like dirt bikes do lol. And I tried a dual sport and its just disappointing but there is not much to ride in Ga nearby. Or let me say this there is a ton of trails to ride but its always someones property OR hunting land. I got tired of the tickets kinda sucks
I just got a 2016 with the 4cs front fork, absolutely hate it. Does the new 300 co.e with wp 4cs? I ride in semi sand areas and the loose terrain is prone to wash out from under you, but I can dive over way further on my old nimble YZ than this thing, absolutely no faith in it's turning.
I can't decide between the 2017 (carburated) and 2018 (TPI) 😅 Is there a risk that carburated 2-strokes will be outlawed in Europe, for climate/environmental reasons? 🤔
Just subbed, damn your powerlines are waaaayyyy better than mine here in NC, what part of VA are you riding in? I have a 2017 ktm 690 enduro r ...talk about torque.ummm YEAH!!

Fuel injection is going to save 2 strokes in general from the ban hammer I reckon. I'm actually surprised off-road 2 strokes still exist with EPA and Euro Star hysteria trying to kill everything that isn't lame and stupid. I've spent a bit of time recently daydreaming about Seuter and their 4 pot 500 2 stroke, and how much longer we have to wait for the next generation of 2 stroke production street bikes... interesting times bro 😃👌
Do a clip on it! Huge difference will way better control if you like to go real slow and "trials" ride your bike over tricky stuff. I got the one with the various cams but stuck with the #400 cam.
Allways when you release the gas pull the clutch in immediately, imagine this you are holding the engine in let's say 6000rpm, the second you release the gas the fuel and lubrication mixture drops to idle run ratio, that means it does not get the lubrication needed for 6000rpm. And on a long term this will damage the whole engine and will cost a lot of money. But good videos keep on
Laxmoto they dont brake right away... Its a longterm thing. But it hits the bottom end not im a good way. The 2 stroke engine is not made for engine braking. Its common sence.
good one man, just run your knee protection inside your pants, that's actually dangerous the way you are doing it trust me! Keep those videos coming! Great job

I heard the two stroke snap or power hit is gone on the tpi. Which imo takes the whole identity and fun out of two strokes
