Coronavirus: outbreak "not yet at peak" and lockdown may last another month - BBC News

  • The government has said the UK is still not past the peak of the coronavirus outbreak and the number of deaths will rise in the coming days. It says the lockdown is working but it is too soon to say when it will end or how. 717 more people have died in in UK hospitals in the past 24 hours bringing the total to 11,329. The figure does not include deaths in the community or in care homes. The government has faced more criticism that frontline staff lack protective clothing. The Head of NHS Providers said the supply of medical gowns is "hand to mouth". Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Ten reports from Science Editor David Shukman, correspondent Hywel Griffith and Health Editor Hugh Pym.

Kevin Burrow the issue isn’t that you shouldn’t be paying. It’s that if the country has been put on hold, your livelihood and your job has been put hold, then your bills should be too. Many people will suffer mortgage issues, poor credit and fall behind on other finances. Says it all that I can go for a run or walk for an hour only for my safety , but I can go to work 5 days a week 10 hours a day.

Anyone who is basically saying we are expecting a “freebie” and that this is a “holiday” is clearly misunderstanding. This is an epidemic. People are dying. People are struggling. In terms of the economy and our own personal finances, for as long as the lockdown is in effect there should be a freeze period on all major bills for homes. If the lockdown period is 2 months, all bill payers will owe on extra 2 months on the end of their term. So no, no freebies. It’s called sense.

A 1 I do actually. Having researched viruses most of my life, this isn’t something that’s just going to dissipate. The lockdown will only be lifted to save our economy, and, once it has been, the UK will most certainly be hit by a second wave. China have already reported 200 new cases. If you watch carefully over the next few weeks/months, Spain will reintroduce lockdown as more infections will arise. Whether or not we have a vaccine by next year, or the year after, it doesn’t change the fact that our lives will have to change dramatically. We’ve seen many, many viruses and infections in the past. This is a wake up call and sadly, many will die. We haven’t even reached our peak yet and there will be several peaks rather than just one.

@Whiterun Guard you’re exactly correct, yes. Unrest and people not being able to put food on their table due to lockdown means a backlash and that would form congregations of angry people, which leads to a much higher chance of infectivity. We’ll beat this virus, but it will take a much longer amount of time than we are prepared for.

Obviously people die from other things, the global death toll daily is more then the death toll of covid19 combined!
But because this is new, the death toll has spiked overall and its definitely up there with what kills most humans, its news worthy.
But, is this serious? Not really, of all those infected I hear there's a 3% chance of death. Covid19 has passed the 3 million infected mark (I think) but in the world of pandemics/diseases that's small.
290m are infected with maleria annually, this won't reach 290m.
Influenza kills 650k annually and this is seasonal. The Spanish flu took 50-100m in 2 years, and the bubonic plague took 137m+! This isn't mentioning road deaths, drug abuse or heart disease.
Consider the world as 1 person, and yes we are sick, but its just a fever that we will recover from. We just got ride out the Quarantine.

The exercise showed that the pandemic would cause the country's health system to collapse from a lack of resources,[2][3] with Sally Davies, the Chief Medical Officer at the time, stating that a lack of medical ventilators and the logistics of disposal of dead bodies were serious problems.[4][5] As of March 2020, the full results of the exercise remain classified.[6]

Ordinary surgical masks are only useful for helping people who are already infected, but not yet symptomatic, from spreading the virus to other people. They won't stop you from _catching_ it yourself.
They are a good idea at the moment because there are still a lot of people around who don't know they have the virus yet. They stop infected people from coughing or sneezing their illness onto other people.

Fact is that you were created by Him and will be returned to Him, and He doesn't answer to you.

I'm also concerned about the number of people who potentially have other ailments and have gone undiagnosed simply because they can't go to the hospital. 2 of my friends parents have cancer and had to cancel treatment because the NHS are just swamped. I don't think things are going to go back to normal for a lot of people for a long time.

When i tell you, the death rates in not lock down countries, in the other words, free countries are the same or lower as in the "lock down" ones... When i tell you the criteria they used to fill the death certificates... When i tell you, 80% of Italian deceased had 2 or more chronic diseases, 50% 3 or more, that only 1% were healthy people, that the 2 people under 40 who died had cancer and complicated diabetes.... Only then you will look around you and see this doesn't make sense at all... Only then, we can all break the spell, join again, hug each other and fight down this dictatorship imposed to us... Turn off TV and look around you and honestly ask if this makes sense.
