Sony Handycam DCR-TRV120 Digital8

Video quality from Digital8 tape.
The Sony DCR-TRV120 is a Digital 8 camcorder that has a built-in 25x optical zoom. It is designed for easy use with a 2.5-inch LCD screen to monitor what is being recorded. The camcorder records the video in a digital format.

I have this camera for 20 years. Made plenty home videos with this device, and even have used it for streaming webinars in time, when SD resolution was not problem for activities like that. Camera still works. Recently have made backup of all my old 8mm tapes, without any problems. It was possible to unblock features known from better models, like zebra function or even two-way firewire transmission (I was using it to store edited videos on tapes). 3 head cleanings for 20 years, thats all service I have made to this nice piece of electronics.

From 2001 to 2014 my dad and also me toward the end used this camera for home movies! The picture was pretty good but the sound not as much as the older one we had in the 90s.

Have just tried to make continuos 90 min record on my 25 year old Video8 Sony TRV412 - it's like I bought it yesterday. Same sounds, same video quality (using 25 year old Sony tape), zoom, focus - everything works perfectly. Of course except the battery.

It’s a FireWire card. My iMac is 2018 though so had to get adapters Apple make to go from FireWire to usb-c. It takes 2 adapters to work.

Please can you help, my mom had this camera more than 20 years, and when I play a tape it has grey lines in the middle, I don’t know what’s the reason

Hey. That sounds like simple dirty camera heads. You need to get a Sony cleaning tape off ebay. Don't get a cheap unknown brand as did do more harm then good. Just get a sony brand new cleaning tape and when you get it run it for 10 seconds then eject the tape and with any luck your old tapes will play fine :)

Yes it plays standard Hi8 mm tapes as well. Actually makes the quality of the video better looking.
