    Just ran across your tutorial. I have been quilting for about 3 years but last year I had two major eye surgeries and just recently, finally, got a new pair of glasses so I can once again quilt. After a year off with no quilting, I was looking for something simple. This video was so great! I am easing back into it but still making something beautiful and worthwhile. Thank you so much. I will definitely be looking for more of your videos!!

      Oh thank you so much for that feedback Allison!I sure do appreciate it! I love this fun project. It's easy to update for seasons or holidays and I always find it a fun and satisfying project. While I enjoy the puzzle of putting quilt blocks together, I also enjoy it more when it's not overly complicated. You should try the hemmed napkins I made to go with this project. They are absolutely beautiful and were super easy to do. I love making them to be honest. I'm really happy I could share something you enjoyed.

    Hi Patty, I’m so happy you’ve made this project without the binding, it’s so time consuming and finicky otherwise. Excited to see what project you make with the leftover strip of fabric. Also, hoping to see your knitting process making hats from your haul video because I loved the yarn you bought and I need to refresh my skill as to how to do that. Have a wonderful weekend, Linda

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před 2 lety

      Oh Thanks Linda!! Yeah, I'm going to explore doing quite a few things without the binding. It has it's place for sure, but it is so nice to not need it every single time! I've been swatching with the yarn to see how it knits and I really really like it so I think it's about time to cast on the hat. I will do a video on it that kind of runs through the process and I'll keep it simple. The yarn is so pretty it doesn't need anything fancy to be honest. You also have a lovely weekend!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much Cheryl!! I always wonder if I'm clear enough in the videos for someone to understand and make the project. I have viewers of all skill levels so sharing a project that is fun and inspiring for experienced viewers but explained well enough for newer quilters that they can also make the project is a bit challenging. But I firmly believe we can have fun making our projects and nothing needs to be excessively difficult to still be valuable.

    • @rochestermanagementservice6082
      @rochestermanagementservice6082 Před 2 lety +1

      @@PattymacMakes Yes, aill teachers face those challenges, Patty. In person, though, it's easier to adjust instruction as you go along because you get immediate feedback, and you'd know if you needed to spend more or less time on a particular area of a project. You are guessing at that when you prepare a video so you need to find a way to accommodate the needs of new and more experience learners. Your approach is to expect a certain basic level of skill or knowledge in your viewers, while referring them to an earlier tutorialb you did with more detail on the "how to.". That meets the needs of almost all your subbies. Thanks, again, Patty, for sharing your knowledge and suggestions with us. ❤️. Cheryl in AZ

      @@PattymacMakes Have you tried? I think for small items like a pot holder or especially a placemat, a lot of people prefer QAYG because it’s quick and easy. It comes out nice too. I recently purchased a QAYG kit (just pre-lined batting with numbers and directions) to make Christmas placemats for friends and families. I think it’s quite popular for smaller kitchen items around me. I don’t normally like QAYG for a normal quilt as it’s so large and I prefer to take it to my long-armer, but for smaller items it can be a very quick and something different. I like varieties!

  • @maryfeinstein8984
    @maryfeinstein8984 Před rokem +1

    Hi . Love this video but have a question. I see that the “finished” size of each placemat is 12x17. What dimensions do you recommend for the cutting of each placemat before attaching the batting and the back fabric? Thank you.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před rokem +1

      Mary it's all the same size. The top, the back and the batting are all 12x17. You are sewing them together and turning them out, so no over cutting like on a regular quilt. The quilting is done very last and will secure all the layers together. I hope that makes sense.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před rokem +1

      The easiest way to do it is to piece the 9 strips and sub cut them at about 12.5". Then lay that piece over top of the batting and backing and trim those using the top as a guide. This is not a project that requires a lot of accuracy so I would not stress over seam allowances and measurements too much. The fun of this project is a lot of sewing and only a little measuring.

    Terrific tutorial. Thank you. May I ask how the fusible stuff holds up to laundering and also does it protect table from hot plates?

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před rokem +1

      Thanks!! I wash and dry my placemats with no special handling and they have been fine. As far as hot plates, if I had an expensive wood table, I would probably make my projects with insulbright to really protect, or double batting. If you're taking something right from the oven to the table then insulbright for sure. I have a square topper made with low loft batting on my table now, and I put jars out of the canner and zucchini bread right out of the oven on that to cool down yesterday. My table top is tile, though. If I'd put them on my ikea furniture I think I would have doubled the thickness. I hope that's helpful. I would suggest making a small project as a test and see what results you get.

I never did get to the tote bag...so I'll have to get that done. I've been working through a full quilt project series for the channel and that's been kind of a big undertaking, but it's coming along! I hope you'll try this set and the napkins. The napkins are such a great complement.

    What will you need if you want to make 4 placemats? How many strips?

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před rokem

      You would double the amount. You can get 3 placemats from one strip set but your fourth won't match, so I made two different strips sets to have four placemats. The left overs can be made into bag projects or a mismatched set of two to give as a gift which is actually quite pretty.

    • @PattymacMakes

      I think you can use either. I like the fusible product because it's thinner and sturdier which I like in a placemat. You should experiment and see what you prefer. I use the pellon product Joann sells in the interfacing area.
