SUMMARY
- Dorothy leaves her room and goes downstairs. She meets her mom in the main hall and tells her she’s going shopping to buy a new dress for her 19-year-old sister Marjorie’s debutante party.
- Dorothy leaves the family’s home in the posh Upper East Side of Manhattan. She takes $25 with her, or about $700 by today’s rates.
- On 27th Street, Dorothy goes to Brentano’s bookstore where she buys a collection of funny stories and essays. Upon leaving the shop, she bumps into her friend Gladys King.
- Dorothy waves a farewell to Gladys and heads home. She decides to go through Central Park on her way. At least that’s what she tells her friend.
- In the evening of December 12, Dorothy still hadn’t arrived home. But there wasn’t any immediate cause for alarm.
- They suspected that someone could’ve abducted his daughter to demand a ransom from the well-off family. He didn’t want to make things more complicated by giving publicity to this story.
- He also searched the girl’s room and found only one strange thing. There were burnt sheets of paper in the fireplace. He couldn’t make out the text, but there were some flyers of ships carrying passengers from the US to Europe.
- Six weeks after his daughter’s disappearance, Francis Arnold finally gave in. He invited journalists for a press conference and assumed that she’d been attacked while on her way home through Central Park.
- There’s also the theory that she simply ran away. It was known that she’d been feeling particularly down about the magazine refusals. In fact, it’s believed that the burnt papers in the fireplace that had been found in the early days of the investigation were letters of refusal.

My theory: Dorothy’s friend said she had to go for lunch with her mother at 2:00pm keep in mind that is quite early for dinner and quite late for lunch. Dorothy said to her friend she was going to Central Park, Dorothy’s friend knew Dorothy was wealthy so what if the friend was jealous or had something against her and killed her, kidnapped her or did human trafficking with her? Also it could link to the boyfriend as he had letter off her where she wrote very upset. She seemed quite depressed and upset,
Also there were still letters in the fireplace so I also wonder if she had planned to make it look like she was going to Europe so she could of traveled to another country while they were distracted focusing on Europe and America! These are just my guesses but yeah!

IDK out yall but I personally find it weird that Dorothy's boyfriend was the first to assume that she took her life...given that she was his GF he would've known at least smth abt her personality...UK enough to know abt the type of person she is? and if I saw it correctly then it wouldn't have been too long since she disappeared...seems to me that he gave up hope kinda fast...which is also sus...I get that he spent all that money but...yea..that's just my suspicion sooo yea

@@ibilanc783 My theory was almost exactly the same but in my theory Dorothy's friend gave her to some other rich man for money and the rich man promised Dorothy success in writing to keep her from trying to run away
Perhaps those burnt papers were threats to her family or friends. The burnt papers might have included a ransom which is the money she took with her and a condition to never let any of her family know about this which is why it's burnt. As for the ship pictures that were also burnt, it's possible that those ships was the meeting place. When Dorothy bid farewell to Gladys, it's possssible that she went to meet the person/s that sent the letters (which are now burnt) as threats to her family but little did she know, it was an abduction plan. Wherever the meeting place is the abductors might have decided to kidnap her somewhere without any witnesses since she was famous after all. But, whatever they did to Dorothy is ssomething I can't answer.....but hey that's just a theory a BRIGHT SIDE THEORY!

I think she probably started a new life. Even though she was very rich and social, we never know what a person is going through from the inside. Maybe she had some other issue troubling her mind which she told nobody about. Mayb she changed her identity forever.

Ok so this is my theory since Dorth was heading through Central Park and so forth she could have possibly fallen on the ice and went into the lake
My second theory is that maybe she was kidnapped due to her high status, I would rather point my fingers at her boyfriend not just because of how far he is but he is more so a likely suspect since Dorthy did tell him almost every aspect of her life making him the first suspect. But even so she took 1,500 dollers and was last seen at Central Park so maybe at that time is when maybe her boyfriend sent one of his friends or servents (,not sure since there was little information about him in the video) to take Dorthy and disguised her, and send her on a boat or so to Europe where Dorthy will be hiding in her boyfriend's house possible hiding place (In the attic, secret rooms, or she hid in the basement) if she did hide in anyone of these key locations, then it would explain why her boyfriend was spending a lot of money to make it sure that it wasn't him.
My final theory is that maybe her boyfriend didn't take him but kidnapped by someone else which would explain a lot since one she is more likely to be alone since she was at Central Park in the snow which make things hard to see

I think this this just written by herself Dorothy as a part of mystery in her literature then everyone else believe in this book. And became urban legend turn out to be fact and vice versa.
There are many possibilities of what had happened. Not all mysteries can or should be solved.

This screams of 'circumstantial foul play'. She wasn't worldly enough to hire professionals to cover her tracks, and she was naive enough to walk through Central Park alone. So: she was dressed well, and alone. She was probably kidnapped to grab her cash (a sizeable amount in those days), but not targeted by professionals, as they would have held her for ransom. Sadly, it was easier for the crooks to dispose of her body and keep the cash. Her European boyfriend would gain nothing from any of this, and his story seems to hold up.

I think maybe Dorthy may have been threatened and was told if she ever said anything to anyone she or her family would be harmed. Maybe the reason she disappeared was because she was told to or didn’t want anything done to her so she just left and decided to leave everything behind her. Also, she could have known the person who wanted to hurt her and they would be at her sisters party and that’s why she ran away.

If Dorothy crossed Central Park to head home, that doesn't mean that she vanished specifically in Central Park. She could've been kidnapped in the streets between her home and Central Park. The Police should've taken this into account and also investigate there.
I think that since she already made so much stops on her way to the dress store she made another one that they didn't know about. She could have been stopped by someone(kidnapper) and she's supposedly famous people wouldn't think about her being randomly stopped.

I read they lied and told one of her friends that she returned and when the friend asked to speak to her , the mother said she had “a headache and went to bed” ..
