    Very interesting and informative study. I found it's hard to believe a player would look away when teammate are likely to pass to him. It's like he learned scan but not played soccer much.

    Imo the defender should also look at the mc, so he passes when he's sure that the mc is aware. As most of things in soccer, the mistakes are collective

      You're not wrong, mate. The def took his time in assessing the options and meanwhile he must have hinted the midfielder, preferably by eye contact, his next pass. The midfielder even called for the ball, so we can't say that he wasn't ready. It was his own timing of scanning that let him down.
