Abandoned Grandma's House - Found hidden home behind property

- In today's explore we find an abandoned home nicknamed "Grandma's House". It's clear an elderly woman spent her final days in this home and for whatever reason the home was neglected and eventually abandoned. That's where I come in. Documenting the past is what I love to do and houses like this is an example of a puzzle. Not knowing any history, going inside the home, and coming out with knowledge of not only the former residents but with culture. Mary Beale died in hospice care in 2010 at the age of 94. It says in her obit that she loved gardening and crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a supervisor of the laundry department in a hospital during her working years. I noticed on a device at 7:41 there’s a name sticker with Elmer Beale on it. This was Mary’s husband who died in 1983. Elmer was most likely in his 60s when he passed away, so Mary lived around 30 years without her husband. It sounds like she was very close to her family, and she was loved and will be missed.
Thanks for that information. I ck'd the obit for Mrs. Beale, and it stated she was survived by a daughter and her family, a son and his family, and many grand-and great-grand children. You'd think somebody in her family would claim and take care of the property, or sell it. But maybe as other posters have mentioned, it may be still in the court process and proceedings are hung up. Wow. At least the place could be maintained and locked up.
PAT SMITH it has been listed for sale for many years. Property taxes are being paid regularly on it. Maybe the family lives out of state and does not have easy access to the property. It looks like it is being sold more for the land parcel then the house.
So why would a family she was close to leave her home in that state?
@@brighterdays2come Very good question, I was just wondering the same thing. Maybe they were trying to keep it as she left it. However, sadly, squatters and looters will ransack the place and tear it up, unlike the guy filming, who is very respectful of these old, abandoned places. With these old granny houses, especially, the looters ransack the place probably looking for money because grannies love stashing money in hidden areas. That's why a lot of these places look like they've been through WWIII. And once the house's interior has been basically destroyed, the owners of the property (if there are any) just leave it as it is. But good point in asking why a family so close to her would just leave her house in that state because my son's grandma is 90 now and we all love her very much and, once she passes, we would never just abandon her house. There are too many memories in that house to let it just sit and rot.
The main sad thing to me is how the family left behind all those family pictures unless they have copies there are replaceable Irreplaceable and we appreciate so much those that take the time to look up the backstory makes it so much more interesting thank you
So depressing to see people neglect houses like this. I would have NEVER left my grandmas possessions behind. So sad. Good video man.
I agree 100% When my grandmother died, my mother kept what she wanted and gave two of my aunts whatever they wanted. Then my mother rolled my grandmother's prized brass coffee table into the garage and just left it there. to make matters worse, my mom threw away the war letters that my grandparents sent to each other while my grandfather was serving in WWII. Those letters would have been priceless to me and I've never forgiven my mother for being so callous about my grandmother's things.

I just don’t understand. There was a wall hanging that said, “We love you Mom” and there were references to Grandma on a pillow. This woman clearly had family and nobody came to get anything in that house. It’s incredibly sad.

I've given old family photos, mementos etc to my kids already- this video hit too close to home for me.
The house could be probate. My grandmother's house is exactly like this only not messed up (that I know of, we check on it periodically). My grandmother died in 2012 and was survived by my grandfather and he was a WW2 vet. So he lived there a for another 5 years until he decided he had enough of living and killed himself. Then out of the blue came his side of the family and they wanted the house. We don't want the house, we just want the photos and things that belonged to my grandma and grandpa but his side put a fucking padlock on the door so we can't get in. So it sits there frozen in time waiting for shit to be settled and all because people we've never met before are many hungry. Sadly this could take years and all the while the house is crumbling. He killed himself in 2017 and it's 2020. House is still in probate.

There was a similar situation with a home in Ontario, Canada dubbed “The Cat Lady House”, there were 2 wills, one stated the property would go to family and the other will stated it to go to some sort of conservatory, legal battles kept it in probate but no one sealed the house or came for the contents. The house was amazing, it fell prey to looters, vandals, grave robbers and eventually to arsonists and it was burned to the ground...so sad!

Diane Stevens I agree. I lost my grandmother in feb. we had less than a week to move her entire house. I stayed in that house and worked hard but we got it done. There’s no reason to abandon stuff like this.

What makes me sad are the childrens books. Grandma was probably so happy when her grandkids came to visit.

I was thinking that there might be family who don't know her house was abandoned like this!! It's heartbreaking to see such a beautiful house abandoned!!
They must not have loved mom that much just to let the house and her belongings rot away. There are a lot of things that could have been donated to someone in need and that house would have been a lovely home for someone if they had kept it up.
Working as a caregiver.... I know all too well that some elderly have children and grandkids. They just dont visit. Or care to visit. Towards the end of my grandmas life i had uncles and aunts that abandoned her. I used to fight with them on how cruel they were. They refused to tell my grandma why they wouldnt talk to her. After she passed though, they claimed all sorts of shit to defame her character without her being able to defend herself. My aunt even hated the fact that my grandma took me in after my mother passed. Her own sister at 25 years old passed away from cancer leaving behind a five year old daughter (me), and you're gonna bitch and moan that grandma fought for her custody? Sometimes family members are shit. And it is extremely sad. But sometimes people are better off without them. I can sure say I'm not missing those uncles and aunts. The only thing I do miss is my mom and my grandma.
In 2011 bought a large Victorian house that an Italian-American couple had lived in since 1945. They raised 5 kids there -- filling the attic walls with childish drawings in chalk and crayon -- but after the husband died in the '80s the family's harmony seemed to dissolve. When the mom got dementia and began wandering the neighborhood aimlessly in the winter in a nightdress -- if she was lucky -- none of the 3 kids who still lived nearby would do anything about it. It fell to a young neighbor to retrieve her each time, to preserve her dignity. He looked up the kids and spoke with them, but they didn''t want any part of helping. I got the place from the estate; even though it was bargained-priced -- just $104,000 for almost 1800 s.f. in decent as-found condition, located in a nice part of the Philadelphia suburbs -- none of the kids offered on it.

You can rid yourself of bad family members. And I have done that. I just need to learn how to let the hurt go. And I'm working on that.

It's the saddest thing ever....being old and left alone with your memories and photos. An entire life lived, and abandoned....forgotten. So depressing.

It is sad. I write in a journal, have ten of them since high school. I have memories too, but no one to leave them with once I go. I'd hope the journal's that I have written all these yrs will find there way to someone that might find the past interesting, the movies I've seen, the jobs I've had over the yrs, places I've been, etc. Its my part of history through my eyes. Hope not just go to trash once gone.
@@41BeachComber I keep journals too. I've been writing them since I was 7. Just began my 42nd journal! 😳 I have no one to leave them to either...yet. I keep telling myself I should make more effort to note current movies/music etc, but I'm drawn to older things. I ✍ write mostly about thoughts and feelings, not so much "the times." Oh well. I still feel compelled to write.
@@AvecPoesie Maybe talk to a local church or library to see if they would take them once your gone for historical reasons. If you do get married and have children they might take them. Maybe talk to your local historical society in the area if they would take then after your gone. If you feel the need to leave them with a friend or a stranger. If you have no one that wants your view of life after your gone, I'd be glad and honored to take them. I enjoy writing in my journals too, not daily but I try a few times a mth to write.

This definitely made me cry. I could NEVER imagine leaving my mother or grandmother alone during times of hardship or leave their items to be forgotten by generations.

Her family may have also fallen on rough times at the time of her end. Maybe they couldn't pay the taxes, maybe they were out of country, maybe they were just unable to make the trek back... So many reasons beyond just the pain of losing the central figure to your family. I don't think it's ok to assume that no one cared.

I have a good piece of advise.Don't video family pictures unless you have permission in writing to explore these places.I had a fellow I knew get in bad legal trouble over that.

This was once a home where family mattered. Sad to see it wasting away, without anyone caring. 😣☹️😢😭
It's just stuff we put to much value in possessions we can't take it with us when we're gone and it only takes one thing of there's to be truly special having a bunch of it does it truly make it special anymore if tons of it

We are in the process of cleaning out my brother's home right now as he recently and very suddenly passed away. The photographs give us moments in our grief to smile and remember the good times we all shared as a family.
The entire experience has made our family tight...we're as close as we've ever been. This is me 8 weeks after the fact finding the silver lining in this very difficult moment in time.

@@loki3292 I went through that when my mom passed away 7 years ago. I'm the only relative left. I have all the stuff she didn't sell when she moved into a senior living home 12 years before. A lot I'd have like to had. Five years later, she moved in with my husband and me. She'd run out of money to stay there at $5,000 a month. She had a stroke while we were out shopping. Earlier we'd taken her out to dinner, which she loved. She wanted to go with us shopping. It was very late after 11.00 and we were renting a vehicle because we didn't have one. Something we did once a month to go to the laundry mat, get groceries, go out. The rest of the month we took the bus. When we got back around midnight she was unable to respond. Called 911 and they took her to the hospital. The doctors said there was nothing they could do. I never got to say anything to her. She had Alzhiemers but for a while she had been getting better. After seven years it hasn't gotten any better. She was 96 so I guess I had enough time but it doesn't feel that way. I too have a dog that helps me through the rough days. She's an Aussie. I got her about the same week my mom died. She turned seven last December. She was ten weeks old when I saw her at Pet land. We've been tight ever since.

While it's sad to see a house like this abandoned, I just want to say how much I appreciate your compassion while exploring these properties: for instance putting that newspaper clipping right back where you found it, the emotion in your voice when you asked, "Didnt this person have children, geandchildren?" and your kindness in opening the window to help the bird, encouraging him and your excitement when he made it out. In the videos I've seen you strike me as a really kind person.

Don’t be, it’s a natural fact of life. I can imagine what might have happened (based solely on personal experience of my family). The presence of woman’s clothing, but not a man’s clothing, suggests that she might have been the first to go. Assuming these was a farm (and one that their heirs did not to farm) , the heirs either took the man to live with them or he went to a retirement home. Farms put all the buildings (houses, barns, etc) together. The farm was probably sold to a neighbour, who had now need of the buildings. A cousin of mine bought an old farm and that happened. The old woman did not want to stay after her husband died. She packed suitcases and left with her daughter. Tempus fugit.

4:56 that's an old pedal cranked singer sewing machine that predates world war 2,they were made in Glasgow Scotland 🏴 , the factory was turned over to make machine guns during World War 2 then closed down at the end of the war and never turned out a single sewing machine ever again.
My late grandmother had one of those singers, it was an ornament.
I remember when I was a young child seeing it, the little drawers on the sides with sewing spares and spools of thread in them..
When my grandmother passed away in 1992 my grandfather took it out into the back yard and burned it as he couldn't bear to look at it in the corner of the Livingroom..
This must have been brought to the US by someone many years ago as I don't think they exported any there (sewing machine era around 1925-1940)
I loved Grandma's house. I would love to go through all her things. I am 76 and have many of my grandma's antiques and Mom's and mine. All antiques and memories. My police officer husband just passed away and our son will get everything and he loves all of it.

Felt so comfortable as you toured this home. The "mary jane shoes" in the suit case are actually valuable! To think, she most likely had an ambulance get her from a fall...possibly never recovered; hence no longer there. Possibly homestead was just left as is... because no one chose to claim it or keep it up. Yes, the wood was extremely clean!! & next to black mold. ( you said, I thought it at the same time!) Same with thinking it was a guest home. You truly make me smile, great young man you are! You two so extremely respectful of others belongings. Keep doing beautiful things with your channel

I don't know why you got all pissy at the end of your reply. Perhaps this grandmas family don't live near the house, moved country even. Perhaps they have their own pictures and keepsakes of grandma. Perhaps they have some sense of reality that they can't keep every bloody thing just because it belonged to grandma. It doesn't mean they don't know about sentimental values.
Oh must keep that cup because grandma drank from it, oh must keep that tv because grandma used to watch it, oh must keep that carpet because grandma used to walk on it. Either way I do agree that it is sad that her house has just been left to rot.
P.s I am actually very sentimental thank you, I do not lack that trait. However, I'll type it again... YOU CAN'T KEEP EVERYTHING 😊

a lot of times, it gets held up in family disputes and they're not allowed to enter during that time... the case costs more than the house is worth, both sides give up, and the bank ends up taking it
I'm intrigued too and sometimes a little sad. I always hope that the people who lived there were happy.

@ Krista C, when my parents died we didn't know what to do with the house, it was full of our memories of growing up, we knew how much my parents loves that house and how hard they had worked to get it . We were in a quandary, none of us wanted to live there as we have our own homes but we don't stand the thought of someone going on and gutting it to modernize it to today's standards. So there it sits, my brother mows the grass and keeps an eye on the place in general.
To the families they are more than just houses, they are all we have left of our past , of who we are. Some families just can't let them go but being in them is too emotional.
I appreciate your sense of compassion at seeing this place as somewhere life was alive all those years ago. I am much older than you and it makes me cry to see Grandma's stuff left to rot. Her children didn't give a damn apparently or money problems got the best of them. Anyway, that phone and TV could have still been working in the 90s even though they are from the 70s. Thanks for the look and thanks for being respectful. You are witnessing what's left of the greatest generation's " stuff"...keep in mind, these items that look old to you were miraculous innovations to them. God bless.

The black box @7:41 is an analog Ohm Meter Made by Precision Apparatus. The “Name tape” with Elmer Beale on it is very likely the owner of that meter. That practice of putting you name on your tools with a name tape was common practice in years past in an industrial or construction trade. I don’t even know if they make those name tape guns any longer. A meter like that would have been used by an instrumentation tech or possibly an electrician. I also recall seeing a sign in the attic of the garage with name Beale on it, though I couldn’t read what it said. Highly probable that’s the name of the man/family that lived there. I have a Simpson meter just like it with my name on it with the same type name tape, same color too. Also let me say thank you for being respectful to the memories of those who lived where you now explore. That alone says a lot to your personal character! As you were.

Omg such a beautiful home even in its worst state you can see it was a home filled with love , and granny was very wealthy judging by all the land , it just makes no sense to me how everything is just left , even all those photos of such memory's its kind of disturbing don't you think really tugs at my heart . The blender, next to the stove, was manufactured by Hamilton Beach. I was given one, same color, by an older relative. Still works and can produce awesome frozen daiquiris. The architectural style of the home is still in high demand today and if the foundation is solid and the price is right, well worth saving. As for mold, get a mask, some Clorox and clean it up.

Bleach does not kill black mold.
@@MEGA.CHUNGUS I stand corrected. Bleach may clean the surface but due to its chemical components it does not absorb into porous surfaces therefore causing excess moisture. Hence the root of the problem still exists and the growth actually accelerates. I actually used the term bleach or Clorox metaphorically.

My heart goes out to this lady whose house this belonged to. You can feel her presence even though she’s gone. I can tell she was a gentle and kind old woman who loved her family. Everything you showed here clearly was exemplified that and this is your only video that I’ve watched of your channel that made me want to cry. I wish this woman’s family treasured her belongings. It’s just not fair. Thank you for treating it with respect.

Thank you for being respectful of the items in the house. Everything there is the remnants of someone's life. Everything from images on the wall that say I love you mom, to photos of the family from years ago. Someone's life was there. Sad to see it sitting and going to waste.

The decor is kinda 60s, but we had stuff like rotary phones and console TVs in the 80s. Those natural wood doors with the crystal doorknobs are gorgeous!!!
I remember a doorknob like that on my grandmother's pantry door. As a kid I was fascinated by it.
SweetCincy1 decor is more like the late 70s to 80s. The main house did have a few things from the 90s.
Our house has the same glass door knobs with the original old keys to lock them.

I noticed that too. My house has more dust in a week than that house after 17 years.
When I was a kid, my parents split up and we moved. I was 11. Years later, after I got married, my husband, brother and I took a road trip back to the town where we used to live and the house was still there. Everything was exactly the way we left it the day we moved, right down to the cookies in the cookie jar.
We loaded up the car.

@@truethat8503 hehehe, obviously I brought the cookies in the cookie jar along (it was collectible and valuable) the cookies were like dust if you tried to break them, but they looked exactly like they did when they were freshly baked. My mother kept them for about 15 years after that and they pretty much disintegrated, so she threw them away.
@@prewgeeq7416 the house was demolished by the time we thought about that. Nobody would have cared to buy it. Nobody wants to live there. there's just a field of grass there now.
What happened to your father after you, your mother and brother moved? Did he just leave everything and setup a house elsewhere?
This makes me teary-eyed, this house is so loving and full of life, and yet there is no one left to enjoy or even remember the loving memories that filled those walls. The fact that the house sat for 15 years unclaimed is truly heartbreaking. This is unlike many other abandoned journeys because this really tugs at the heartstrings. Imagine being that old woman sitting in that uplifting and comfortable nest she made with memories, family and the passage of time. All while knowing that one day she will die and there will be no one there to claim the haven she had spent her whole life making. Every photograph is a glimpse into their lives, and there is no one to hold onto those memories anymore and it just leaves an empty story that cries in black mold, dust and neglect.
She kept stuff clean. Bless her heart.

Sharon Parson & angelfirelite - I did notice the pictures and the dolls. That doesn’t mean that those people are still alive, unfortunately. It also could be the family had a falling out, and that is why the family left it behind. These are just possibilities, I am not claiming it as fact.
We will probably never know, which is why talking about theories is so cool. And it’s all so mysterious.

Yes when house is on probate nothing can be removed.lf the family doesn't or can't afford taxes etc. the state gets it and it just sits and rots.

@stateofdisaster you're totally right. I was young when my grandparents passed. I think my maternal grandparents had a will but, 2 of my aunts changed the locks on my grandparents condo preventing my mom and her one sister who lived there at one point from getting in. My mom was lucky to get a few things but her sister got the rest.
My paternal grandmother had an apartment and my dad's sister and aunt were all killed in the same car accident as my grandma so we were her only living immediate family and were able to keep whatever we wanted from her apartment.
@stateofDisorder Sorry for the loss of your mom. Sudden deaths are often the hardest. I had my mom until I was 65. I am grateful for that. I hope you can find someone to talk to about your mom. It can help a lot.

One of the things that strike me is that there is little or no dust, no cobwebs. If it had been abandoned for 15 years I would expect a thick layer of dust to be over everything. I forgot to mention, I liked this video and look forward to seeing more like it.
There was a cross stitch downstairs in the first house that said We Love You Mom, so the person had family. That's what's so strange and really sad. Great video. Love the respect you show.

It may still be owned by someone. There’s two houses in my town like that, not in use, technically abandoned but owned by someone in the family.
Somebody *always* owns it, either the city, for unpaid taxes, or the bank, (although "grandma" likely had no more mortgage), or relatives, if the taxes are still being paid. It does look to me like someone had been coming every few months to clean it out, since it's dust free , but it also looks like some squatters or thieves went through a lot of rooms..
Being well hidden helps.

For a place that's been "abandoned" for so long, it sure is clean and dust-free!
dust is human skin cells, so if it's closed up and nobody is in there moving around, no dust will be created.

Yes. Just what I was thinking. Also dust is caused by many things including pollen that comes through open windows or doors. We already know the windows were open as we seen with the bird who flew in and was eventually guided out. A big wtg on that one. Anyway Apparently someone was in there long enough to ransack it as he said. Just sad on so many levels.
Did you see the mold tho on the walls?
Also, there are no mice droppings or other dead animals. We had relatives with an old cabin and after we opened it up after just one winter it would have dead mice, droppings, and other signs of little critters getting in or trying to....and yes, there were always cobwebs and dust.

I’ve always liked houses with decor from the 60, 70s, and 80s. Just gives a humble feeling especially considering this is a grandmothers house.
