    I’m must admit I used the rope technique, but at that time, I didn’t know better, and thankfully, my mare automatically lay down without never fighting it.
    But now that I do know better, I’m very ashamed of the way she learned. And thank you for this video :)

    I believe the video in question was intended to be used on a horse who is aggressive and dominant. If your horse is submissive and already well trained with ground work manors then this video is most helpful. The other technique is intended for horses that charge, bite etc. and need to be taught that the owner indeed is alpha. Always should be done with patience and a trainer!

    The rope method is very old fashioned. Sadly confess that tying up a front leg is something that I am familiar with. It was taught to me more than forty years ago. (Yes, I am that old.) It never became something I used.

    I loved this Lauren! I've always used my voice as an aid and was taught to train this way before it was even given a 'title' (natural horsemanship, liberty etc). It was just what I was taught as good horsemanship, that you never force a horse to do anything, and you use your voice as a reward to help the horse understand.

    The cowboy wasn't trying to make a trick horse. On working ranches they don't have all week to feed treats and pussy foot around and bribe their horses, they have a job to do. I have laid down horses that took very well to the rope technique with no fight at all including a wild mustang, others not so much. The wild mustang totally trusted me after laying her down with David's technique. Depends on their DNA. One horse I never did get laid down with the rope technique but their was no abuse involved. He was working with a dangerous horse that needed an attitude adjustment, had a bad attitude that was going to hurt someone if not taken care of not a cute pet situation.

  • @blkluvla
    @blkluvla Před 3 lety +1

    I agree. The technique of trying to get the horse to bring in his hind legs and buckle the front legs didn't work for me or my gelding Algot. He got confused because the cues were similar to what I used to make him bow. I tried wetting him but I think I didn't give him enough of a soak. On the weekend I'll give him a full bath (needs one anyway 😁) and then walk with him in the round pen until he makes his move! Eventually he'll get it.

    There is definitely always more than one way to do anything. I'm not sure I see any practical purposes for wanting your horse to lay down on command. It also seems pretty apparent that different genres of horse people exist, the cowboy types see their animals as tools or instruments, where the recreation rider seems to consider them pets. I don't think either methods has any inherit moral superiority, but judging by this comment section I would be in the minority there. Either way, interesting thoughts and commentary. Last thing, that is not what it looks like to force a horse to lay down, it's just a different incentive structure.

    *Yikes* to that rope technique! I taught my mare a sort of bow when she was younger and I used a rope to lift her foot (not wrapped round her belly) - but I got really confused holding it and giving a whip cue, so in the end I just used a polomint treat and asked her to lower her head and rock back... Still a bow! Less force! Many mints..

    I totally hear you in reference to simply teaching a horse to lay down. The ONLY ONLY reason someone should ever maybe consider “the rope lay down” is for aggressive horses it’s NOT for teaching a horse to lay down . Its to change the power dynamic with an aggressive or dangerous horse who will s struggling to except the human as alpha. A small community has voiced it to be useful for anxious horses to supposedly “face their fears” but I’m not sure how accurate or beneficial of a technique it is for that tho.

    Do you always have to have the whip around to get Boo to perform her tricks or can you just tap her belly? I've taught my horse a few different tricks (like smiling, handshake, bow) that I can just ask for in the field without any prep and he will do them. I'm interested in teaching my horse to lay down but I don't want to always need a whip to get him to perform it.

      To everyone who thinks the cowboy is teaching a trick cause that’s what the narrator has claimed is not the case that horse was aggressive and looking at a future of being dangerous to be handled by anyone which includes the filly herself. This is not abuse it is a last ditch effort to get the horse with the program so she/he can have a productive, healthy, safer, more trusting relationship with humans. Sorry just can’t stand people talking crap about things they have no clue why they are talking about. Smh

I started with my boy end of last summer, bathing him and taking him to his favourite rolling spot and he’s quite happy to roll and stay down, relaxed with me down there with him, loving all the fuss and praise. Then I had to stop for the winter as I didn’t want to wash him in the cold. I’ve started again with him now and he has picked it straight back up. My problem is when I try to add in a cue so he does it on “command” rather than just when he wants to, he just stops. He’s not wary of the stick in any way he just stops. Should I try a voice cue instead ? Cut the stick out all together or should I keep trying with the stick ? I’m not touching him with it just going as though to tap him in the girth area ? "Wild and unbroken" except she allowed ropes to be put on them in the first place. Doesn't seem very "wild" to me. That being said, forcing a horse to the ground as a "training" method to force "submissive" behavior, makes zero sense. In the first first video, he compares it to dogs laying down in a submissive manner. Horses don't do that. Equine and canine behavior are not even on the same plane, so that alone is a dangerous comparison. Horses, when they submit, walk away from situations. They lay down, when they're either very tired, or in such a state of panic they give up. Forcing it is detrimental, and does nothing but create fear.

    Honestly I think you should remove this video the sheer fact that you think this method is to teach a horse to lay down speaks volume about your experience level. It’s not a good look to people who actually know how to start colts, really train green horses and do real training everything I have seen so far just shows how narrow your training knowledge is as in continuing the education of what is already considered a push button horse with a wealth of excellent training as seen with the show jumping… Not trying to be rude or shame you like you are doing to the cowboy (who clearly is very experienced demonstrating the lay down with excellent technique) just being honest. If you were one of my students, family or friend I’d tell them the same thing. It’s ignorant, uneducated, and 100% assumptions that are false. To prove my point I’d love to hear what YOUR method of training would be to correct a horse that is known to charge, kick and bite it’s handler????
