  • We got hit HARD... The studio ended up with almost knee-deep water, ruining a lot of vintage equipment, as well as my editing PC, network equipment, and the building itself. Come to find out, it's not covered by insurance! Here's a quick update about what happened. I'll be back as soon as possible producing videos again, I'm just not sure when. There's probably $20,000 worth of damage and loss that I'm going to have to try to figure out somehow.
    It was suggested by a few viewers I set up a GoFundMe or a fundraiser of some sort, so here's a link to donate directly to me if you want to help: www.paypal.com...
    Or if you prefer using GoFundMe, here's a link to that as well: gofund.me/ceac...

    I also went through a flood. 3 feet of water in my basement. Honestly 99% of the electronics that went under water survived. Just let them dry out a few weeks..or months. I opened everything up and set it all in front of a few fans turned on hi and let them run for about a month blowing on them. Everything worked surprisingly. Worth a shot!

    Our town got hit by a large flood last year. 3-4ft of water above ground.. Anyways, I got hold of an iMac 24 2008 weeks after that it got flooded. I opened it to confirm it was dry and then powered it on. It booted up to the OS like new. Of course the LCD was ruined. But deep cleaning with hot power washer mate the thing like new.

    Most of that computer equipment on your editoring rig is recoverable, SSD, MB, RAM CPU etc. the PSU not so much. Just wash extensively with DeMin water then IPA and dry for a few days.
    Insurance or not, if the event was a result of an action / change to the environmental system by council or some other entity, then you have a good chance to get compensation.
    Still a tragedy and such a sad scene. So sorry to see whats happened. Good luck with the recovery.

      I've got the editing rig torn down and dried. I'll try your suggestions with it. If nothing else is recoverable on it, I'd like to recover the ssds.

    Sorry to hear this. Nothing is safe from mother nature - I have learned this over the last 60 years. Water is always your biggest enemy, because not only can weather cause floods, but so can your own plumbing. For this reason, I never put computers or my audio gear on the floor - except of course, for my floor-standing speakers.

    Sorry to see this, but take heart that electronics that’s been in water like this is perfectly salvageable provided it’s not been powered on at the time of the flood. I once fished a TV from a decidedly dirty canal and after several weeks of letting it dry, it worked perfectly and gave good service to a colleague for several years. Mechanical equipment, motors and especially hard drives won’t be readily salvageable, but most of your Tandy machine should be absolutely fine. Strip it down, rinse with clean water and set out to dry.

    • @VintageElectronicsChannel
      @VintageElectronicsChannel  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I'm already working on the Tandy and the IBM 386. I think those will be fine once cleaned and dried.

    • @VintageElectronicsChannel
      @VintageElectronicsChannel  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I've got almost everything that's salvageable opened up and dried off. I'll start cleaning them soon and then just leave them to dry for a long time. Good thought on the water detector. I never expected it to flood back there, so I never thought about that before.

    I'd love to see a video of "did it survive under water?". I'm wonderin if something like a VHS deck could survive after it's been dipped in creek water.

  • @mrnmrn1
    @mrnmrn1 Před 3 měsíci

    Definitely don't trash that TASCAM deck, and most of the flooded stuff! It will be a hell of a job to clean the sand out of the tape transport, but it will be fine after that (it might need new motors). CRT monitors won't be bothered with a single flooding, let them dry out, they will be fine. I have TVs that were outside for a decade and they work just fine. The PS/2 also will be fine, minus the hard drive probably. Basically everything will work fine after drying out, except hard drives, and probably tape decks. The former is a lost cause, the latter can be repaired (new motors if needed, and a very tedious cleaning and re-lubing after taking the tape transport to bits).
    Your editing PC is toast since it was powered on during the flooding, but the SSDs might have survived, it's worth a try after drying them out (even better to wash them with distilled water BEFORE the dirty water dries into them, then rinse with IPA).
    But just for the hell of it, I would power up that editing PC after it dries, just to see what happens. If it doesn't work, try it with an other power supply.
    A former colleague had his basement flooded almost up to the ceiling. After drying up, basically everything worked, even his oscilloscope!

    • @VintageElectronicsChannel
      @VintageElectronicsChannel  Před 3 měsíci

      I've been slowly working my way through everything. So far, two of the three SSDs in my editing PC are still good. The third one is toast, but it was backed up. The Tascam deck will likely be fine, I've already had it apart looking it over. Both the Tandy and the PS2 should end up ok. Not sure about the floppy drives and the power supply in the Tandy yet, but the motherboard should be fine. I haven't had a chance to dig into the other vintage PCs like my Win95/98 machine or my XP machine, but they're next on the list. Some of the miscellaneous equipment like old VCRs that aren't particularly valuable are on the bottom of the list to look at. I want to make sure the items that are the most valuable or special to me get cleaned up and tended to first. I have electric back on, at least for the lights and some of the outlets, and a dehumidifier has been running non-stop. Been a big job, but I'm sticking with it!

    OMG, that sucks! HOWEVER, if handled properly, 99% is salvageable. I would rinse with a hose to get the dirt out, then rinse again with distilled water, then dry. Corrosion is your biggest enemy at this point, so make sure you dry everything ASAP. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES POWER wet equipment, it will be damaged beyond repair. If you have rare-valuable stuff, then you may want to invest in a Ultrasonic Cleaner bath. There are many videos on CZcams that show how to go about. Here's a starting point: czcams.com/video/cV-2_TKC-1w/video.htmlfeature=shared On a positive note, I'll be waiting for your video showing us how you salvaged your Tandy 1000 SX! This will be a painfully long and ongoing project... but your priority #1 at this point is not to allow corrosion to start. So rinse, and dry well ASAP! Good luck!
