I'm so glad they decided to go with hiccup loosing his leg, it honestly had a much bigger effect on people than I think they knew. When How To Train your Dragon first came out I was 13 and refused to go out in public unless I was wearing long pants because I am an amputee, and I was embarrassed about it because of the way kids (and older people too) acted around me (usually saying things like "What's wrong with you" or just gawping at me, whispering to their parents or friends, etc). I tried to hide my legs. I hated them. Then I saw HTTYD with my best friend and I had no idea about the ending. I cried not because it was sad, but it was the first time that I'd seen someone like me (someone with a disability) in a movie that wasn't depressed or complaining their life was over because they couldn't do anything, and their life was going to be terrible. It was the first time a movie (let alone a kids one) was like "yeah, this was sad that it happened, but it's not the end of the world. life goes on and you can still have a great life". after the movie came out, I had kids come up to me and say I was "like Hiccup". they knew what my disability was without even having to ask. They weren't afraid of me. the whispers changed from "mommy what's wrong with her?" to "Mommy look, she has cool legs like Hiccup!"
It didn't last unfortunately, I still get questions and the ones who did say that I was like Hiccup were a small number to begin with, but it did teach SOME that people like us exsist, and we aren't something sad you should pity, but regular people

HTTYD director/screenwriter Dean DeBlois is honoring his word to Cressida to finish the film series from exactly where she began. The stories come full circle.

4:30 - Toothless stayed about the same size in the books (though he was expected to grow later...), Hiccup never rode him - there was a different dragon he rode, a Windwalker, which first appeared in the 5th book. That dragon was described to look a bit more like Toothless in the movies, though, so movie Toothless might be an amalgamation.
7:36 - there wasn't a character named Astrid, but she's almost certainly based on an existing character named Camicazi - the characters are pretty similar, and both name their dragons Stormfly. (I'm glad they changed the name, though, it would've sounded odd, especially without visible spelling)

  • @Cuddleshock

Astrid wasn't "willed into existence" out of nowhere; she was adapted from the wild, crazy blonde girl Camicazi from the books (in which she and Fishlegs are Hiccup's best friends).

Julie Unicorn - They have an official release date. It is March 1st 2019.
Director/screenwriter Dean Deblois wanted a release date four years apart from HTTYD 2. But then Universal acquired the rights to DreamWorks in the middle of production. It was nearly scrapped from their upcoming releases. Universal actually shut down the film The Croods 2 while the creative team was working on it. Just pulled the rug out from under their feet and said "This movie is not no longer happening. Stop everything you are doing."
Universal was not seeing any real critical or commercially viable prospects with How to train Your Dragon 3 due to it's predecessor's only "moderate" success. Dean Deblois, the producer Bonnie Arnold and book series author Cressida Cowell not only fought to keep HTTYD 3 on the road to release. They fought to keep their script in tact.
The compromise they came to was it's current release date. After all this creative team went through. Let's just be appreciative this is being released at all.

Dreamworks imo, they don’t care much for the money (to an extent, we all do lol), they care about the movie and the fans

I think it's important to remember that this trilogy was adapted from books. To an extent, the creators stayed true to the books, and that was important to them. The ending in the third movie is in fact how the books ended. The dragons all left. It was a way to explain the legends and myths of dragons, but also the fact that they there clearly are no dragons today, and no evidence of them ever really existing.
So, if anything, the books are at fault for this ending. In order to understand if the way the ending didn't fit super well was an issue of the movies doing a poor adaptation, or a tonal issue present in the books to begin with, one would have to read the books and watch the movies. I have never read the books myself, so I can't say.

Have to say...the TV series is awesome! It tells so much about the missing pieces between httyd1 and 2...for example how Gobber became a dentist or how dragon racing became a thing and so much more
