Changing the San Andreas to Bullet Bros ZZYZX forks

- The Mountain Cycle San Andreas gets a makeover in this video.
When we originally built it we wanted to rescue the bike and get it running again.
The parts we wanted to build it with were not available so rather than waiting until we got the era correct part we built it as close as we could with the parts available.
We wanted to use Bullet Brothers ZZYZX forks as we thought they suited the bike and I had some of these forks back in the day fitted to one of my early full suspension Downhill Bikes.
Another guy on the DH circuit that ran them in his San Andreas was Shaums March, he really pushed the limits of possibility with his bike, so this bike is a bit of a tribute to his ability and recreates the way bikes were built in the mid nineties.
If you want to see more of what he got up to go to the Plush video here:

incredible restoration job...and those Hope C2 brakes...sick! I have a set in a box somewhere. ha ha.
Cheers buddy, that’s another piece of mtb history saved👍😀👍
Beautiful fork. When I was 25 years younger that been my dream fork. Good job 👏
Cheers Dryb1as
Looking great we’ll done Joe 👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Cheers bro👍😀👍
Adelantada para su época, y lo mejor es que aun sirve para una bici contemporánea, solo basta con mover las pletinas y el puente y a lucirla con una rueda 29
Hi, I watched it again and it's great, just a little short, but it's okay .. Good luck and let the work go well, I send my regards!😉👌👍🍀🚴♀
👍😀👍
Back to frame and start again
picture and video don't do the finish of the forks justice having seen them in person they are stunning
Cheers buddy 👍
Shaums March used to thrash these. Word got around back in the day that they were full of stiction so people avoided them lol.
Shaums March was totally awesome on one of these, such an inspiration. Cheers Joe.
Not true. They require maintenance. 12 hours riding = 20 min service. The sticking happens when you don't maintain them as they required very frequent service.
@@Mile-long-list Yeah but who could be bothered doing that? They should have solved the problem, a pair of judy dh's needed less servicing and that's saying something
@Gazzaloddi-ml9ej you're right it's silly needing that much service however they're super easy to take apart and if you kept on top of it they were excellent. Every ride slap some oil on the stanchions and you're good to go, end of the week pull em apart it takes all of 5 mins to take the legs off
Hi joe, from memory a few people I knew back in the day had the forks. To be honest most said they where awful. I’m sure people have tinkered with them and improved them. For me there a downgrade on that frame. I can always remember the San Andreas on the wall in leisure lakes mere brow. I got my first kona there in 93 i think. That mountain cycle was the stuff of dreams mate.
Yes there were better forks and yes maybe a downgrade but they kinda suit it and say a lot about that era. I’m glad it has recreated a memory for you and it’s great to hear such great comments on that era. Cheers. Joe.
@@JoesBikesUK it’s only my opinion joe. 👍
@@kevegghead I think your opinion is right, you had to send them to Hanebrink for modification if you wanted them to work anything like ok! I ran some for a while and tried all sorts of mods but without success. I soon changed them out for some marzocchi forks, junior t’s I think. I still have a soft spot (some would say that aught to be a local marsh) for the zzyxz fork because I thought they looked cool. And that’s also a matter of opinion. I can always remember watching the Plush video with Shaums March doing wonders with them on his Mtn Cycle, but I bet his weren’t standard? Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend mate and I look forward to hearing more from you, cheers. Joe.
@@JoesBikesUK hi joe, I think the hannebrink, bullet brothers and stratos 4 and 6 forks where all pretty average. All 6 inch travel but the damping on them was awful. They would pitch and dive under braking. I had a rockshox Judy DH which had been fettled with. Much less travel but a far better fork. It was just a bit flexy.
What forks where on the original San Andreas? Upside down weren’t they?
And the brakes where pro stop? Not sure now to be honest. I still enjoy the videos mate cheers for taking the time and trouble doing them👍
@@kevegghead glad you enjoy the videos. I had some stratos super six forks too, I had the first ones in the uk. I rode for a Uk bike manufacturer called McCague which made a cnc’d alloy box section bike, I was lucky to get hold of some new kit back then!
Still now where near my twins, no "HOPE" !!!!
That’s some serious paint thinner/stripper. How long did it sit? That’s a beefy fork!
The paint stripper worked in about 20 minutes per coat, I used 3 coat to get it all off. Yes they are a big fork, makes the bike look tough. Thanks for watching the video and making time to comment, it means a lot, cheers. Joe.
Nice work! You ever built anything with Mr. Dirt like the fat fork or Wildthing stem?
Glad you enjoyed it, we hope to get some of that stuff soon, cheers Joe.
Close, but no cigar
I Don't smoke ;-)
I’m sure when you bought ZZYZX forks new they can in a giant cardboard tube? Can anyone remember for sure?
Hi Ben, yes the tube was about ten inches round and about thirty inches tall with ZZYZX graphics on it. I had one and wish I still had it. They did look super cool in the day but wish they worked as well as they looked ;-)
Where can you get replacement stickers?
We can do those for you, email: joesbikesworksop@gmail.com and we can sort them out, cheers Joe.
