Mastering Start To Finish - Maximum Loudness Step By Step

  • In this video, I turned the camera on while mastering a mix to show you the steps I took to get a loud, competitive and forward sound ready for release.
Initially, the peak loudness of the mix was at +0.1db dB but the average loudness of the mix was too low. This meant that it sounded quiet on most playback systems, it could not be turned up to a good listening level and yet still caused some clipping!
My main objectives were to increase the average loudness while building up a solid tone with lots of crunch and distortion. I also listened critically to ensure there were no issues or edits missed. The final result was a master with playback at -5.2LUFS on Spotify with no gain reduction applied. This is exactly what the client wanted to ensure their music could compete with other loud songs on the platform.

Honestly can't believe I'm watching and learning this for free, this is so valuable for people who are into production, mixing and mastering. I've said this before in a comment but it is truly amazing the work you put into making these videos for people to learn. Also very humble by the artist to give out the stems for people to practice. Everything in this video truly made my day. Keep up the good work!👏

Same here. lol when I get to, say, Mea Culpa (Deadbeat mix) FINAL 17? This one isn’t hypothetical, either. Occasionally, I will add a word that helps identify the main edit. It can help to see the exports at certain places of development, kinda like a timeline.

Like countless other people I wanna join in and thank you for all the videos! It's especially awesome that these lessons apply to pretty much any genre one is producing (I'm mostly doing spacey ambient music, sometimes even electronic rock). Although loudness and compression specifics is a bit different in those genres, the basic ideas are same.
In a matter of days my mixes and masters have become way more clear and juicy, thanks to your vids! (tho in my case it's often been "putting out fires" as my source files and sounds can be from years ago and are crappy quality, so I'm not dealing with subtleties but rather major ugly frequencies lol)
