- Slipknot to Ritchie Valenz, for some reason the I vi IV V chord progression just sounds amazing. I don't know why certain combinations of tones sound nice to us, nor why progressing through those tone combinations in certain ways are universally pleasant, but I am glad of it.
This video has no cuts, which was a moonpasta challenge that I silently accepted. But you should feel free to continue challenging me to do things, I like that.
I discovered this and all of the songs in it on my own through what I already knew or searches on the internet except for the Slipknot use of the Ice Cream Changes, which I discovered via an awesome mashup (linked below) that, yes, I found on Reddit. But I was already working on the video when I found that...it just added another layer of awesome.
Thanks to everyone who came out to see the Nerds and Music show...it was amazing.

I would like to point out that lactose intolerant people like ice cream, too. It's very tragic.
That is why they deserve all the cuddles
Try soy, almond, rice, cashew milk ice cream or anything else you can find. There are lots and they are amazing.
Ghastmask Zombie I just give in and get sick sometimes when I'm craving.
Sad reacts only

"I Bieber flipped them back on" only hank green.
By the way Hank, if you were still wondering why the I vi IV V progression is so pleasing, it is because it has motion away from the tonic(I chord) and creates a very small amount of tension with that movement (especially since it moves to a minor chord), then resolves some of that tension by moving to a major IV chord, and finally, motion towards the V chord sets up the authentic cadence (V-I) at the end of the progression, which gives it a sense of finality. The movement through the progression with a strong cadence at the end followed by another I chord (which subconsciously reminds us of a half-cadence, providing impetus for further motion) gives this progression the flowing feeling you identified.
I think he and/or Michael Aranda know this.
Slipknot fan here. I know it's an old video, still had to say, we're here. Yes, some long time nerdfighters, are also metal heads lol
fellow nerdfighter and maggot! hi!
We're not alone!
I think Hank got it from the "Psychosocial Baby"
Nerdfighter/Slipknot fan checking in!
+1
It's always worth occasionally going back to watch this video.
Agreed! Seen this video quite a few times since it was first uploading and it's still fascinating to watch.

+Naiadryade Hey, some of us are just discovering it! This Green guy has talent...
Robofish So glad to have you with us!! He does indeed. And don't worry, I wasn't a Nerdfighter yet when it first came out either. Are you watching them all?
Well, I've only watched this one so far, but I'm sure I'll make my way through the rest in time.
some middle aged man sent me
gingeryy same man. same. 😂😂
Same
Here here!
same
Thank them
The ultimate use of this progression is in "Those Magic Changes" from Grease. They even chant "C, A Minor, F, G7" as back-up vocals in the chorus!
I've spent many, many more hours than I ever wanted to singing those notes over and over again to ever forget them. C-C-C-C-C-C, A-A-A-A minor, F-F-F-F-F-F, G-G-G-G seven! It's enough to drive you crazy!
Scheurthiaume Having played Doody in our school's production of Grease, I understand. I cannkt stop singing that dang song!!!!!!! Lol.
Doug Glassman What's that playing on the radio? Why do I start swaying to and fro? I have never heard that song before, but if I don't hear it anymore!
Well, that is a 50's style movie, so it makes sense.
@@madvisme hello fellow Doody! I played Doody for my school back in 2011
This is the only reason John had ever heard "Baby" before 2014. Fun fact,
"And just in case you thought it was only happy songs that did this."
Since when is "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" considered a happy song.
Future John sent me here.
Future John sent me too.
Me three!! Actually me 41...
redundant. anytime someone brings you to somewhere on the net its from the "future". you can't be sent to a song that's not already made.

***** no, but you can technically listen to a song prior to it being published, which means that someone sent you or made you listen to a song from the past! Aha good sir!
I was a bit disappointed with this video because I thought that Hank was literally going to sing a song about how ice cream has evolved over the years.
But this is cool, too. :D
But I want a song from Hank about ice cream, god dammit!
i thought it was a song/rant about weird ice cream
I only watched this video because John mentioned it in one of his recent videos and I must say it's funny xD
I think the dislikes are lactose intolerant people
Completely off topic but your hitalia pic is awsome
Thank you good hetalian
Yes that hetalia pic is amazing
Incongruent interrobangs Thank you!
+
"they use the same chords as justin bieber"... scary thought actually
Nope. Justin Bieber uses the same chords as Slipknot. Psychosocial was in 2008, Baby was 2010.
Galen yeah I know, but I intentionally left out slipknot for it to be applicable to all songs that use the same chord progression
Holy Cow how can one guy be so talented! (& there are 2 of them) I'm amazed!
I love it when they refer back to old videos. Then I can watch them back! I love that!
Holy. Mother. Of. God.
The fact that you listen to slipknot just made my day all over again, five years later.
I can die happily now that I've watched/heard Hank Green sing some Slipknot :')
"also on your definition of 'song'" LOL
When you said talked about not knowing how many slipknot fans there were watching the said "but to them hi" or something of that sort I literally looked at my computer and said "ayyyyyeeeee". I am ashamed
Never tire of this video. Ever.
I'm rewatching it right now for the first time in a while, but I love this video. It's always fascinating and funny.
I just realized this video is 8 years old.. Thank you Hank for making this, for whatever I really like this video and have been coming back to it every now and the for the last 8 years. I just makes me feel good :)
Same.
This is so cute and awesome! Hank's ice team changes video is better than the four chord song video I think
If there is ever evidence of love, here it is, John sending us back to a video where a tiny snippet of Justin Bieber was sung by his brother years ago and he remembered that it was Hank's cover he heard. Beautiful
I have that same Scott Pilgrim poster!
Also, this video is always awesome, no matter how many times I watch it.
Omg Scott Pilgram Rocks
THIS VIDEO REMINDS ME: we have some brothers who still have some punishments, I believe...
Woo only Justin Bieber that John ever heard
I am a slipknot fan and I thought that was a great video. Thank you Hank and John for making my week!
There's at least one Slipknot fan here!
Make it two
DontRobMe13 Three actually.
Gloria Lopez 4th here!

Love the four chord changes, done a few versions myself as i worryingly found a good 70% of my iTunes library fits. But I gotta hand it to you man, from The Beatles, to Justin Beiber, to Slipknot... That's impressive! And yes I do like Slipknot. XD
I was not expecting a Reel Big Fish cover! That was so awesome! Love The Ice Cream Changes!
I am lactose intolerant and I love this progression!
I call BS.
I forgot how much I loved this song. Thanks John for the reminder.
This reminds me of Four Chords by Axis of Awesome.
tiff0795 Thats ironically a different progression. Same four chords but a different order.
+Charlie Lomino what's that one?
The Axis of Awesome one is I-V-vi-IV (specifically in the key of D major so D-A-bm-G)
And the Hank Green one is I-vi-IV-V (He played in the key of C so he played C-am-F-G, but if he played it in the same key as Axis of Awesome itd have been D-bm-G-A)
Charlie Lomino thankss
I screamed when you did Slipknot!!! Thank you, I love Slipknot! I love you!! You *are* awesome, sir. Keep making music!
I haven't listened to this in ages, but today at work I was thinking through some old songs and this popped into my head. Thanks for making sure I never forget the ice cream changes, Hank!
The 198 people who disliked this must have been lactose-intolerant.
This is, no joke, my tenth time or so watching this. I still enjoy it.
Oh my god coming back to this tonight has me howling. I mean, I'm also sleep deprived, but I am howling.
I have watched this so many times I love it so much. Definitely one of my favourite Hank videos.
"If you sue me, I will win". Love that.
I'm good, you? Apparently, lots of slipknot fans here...
Hank is awesome, every video of him I see reminds me how freaking much I love him and how awesome he is.
I'm pretty sure this is one of the best things I have ever seen.
slipknot fan checking in!
Slipknot fans are here in force Hank! Loved the song :)
I almost scremed when I heard him playing psychosocial haha
So I listened to the mashup that you linked, can't get it out of my head now. Thanks Hank xD
I had Ice Cream just an hour ago and then thought of this video again and came back to watch it for like the 14th time. It's still as good as I remembered!
Wow. That amazing chord. It sounded like all of the soundtracks put together. And yes, I know all of those songs. And I wasn't even, you know, -30 then.

Love it. Somehow I was searching for the Fermi Paradox of finding life in the universe ... and found your video. Awesome!
Was great to hear all those old songs again. Also, I came here from John's video from Feb 2014. Time Travel!
Axis of Awesome, anyone?
Differend chords though. And they were not the first ones to do this kind of thing either.
I know, but it's a very similar subject of a video that is also quite popular.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Actually they’re the same chords, its the progression that’s different. 50s progression is I vi IV V where as axis is I V vi IV :)
mademan543 axis of awesome focuses on the cords in general. This one is the specific progression of said chords
I'm getting a ukulele and my goal is to be able to do this within the school year.
Yeah it's been three days and I can basically do this now.
+Becca Moses I was about to say, 15 mins is more than enough
Yeah, the ukulele is possibly the easiest instrument. It's especially easy for those who are musically and/or instrumentally inclined.
Mephostopheles To be fair, I am neither of those things
Becca Moses Point in case. You got it in three days.
I adore this song.
I adore all your songs, Hank
This is one of the coolest thing's I've learned about in a while. Also it was actually pretty fun trying to play along with you too!
Who else was sent here because of John's newest video? haha :) Though I can say that Hank's song did not disappoint!
i was,! tho ive been here before =-)
I'm eating ice cream while watching this
Thanks John for bringing this video back!
This whole video is helping to make my evening more awesome than it was already being. The Slipknot bit was hilarious, too.
I'm sad this didn't include In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, but I guess there are like 10,000 other songs he also couldn't fit into four minutes
My first Vlogbrothers video.
Welcome! DFTBA!
Alanna R. Owww that's sweet ! But I meant that this is the first video I saw of them, a good two years ago :) I couldn't recall what started it and was so happy to stumble across this one and remember !
Ohhh... well in that case you've been a Nerdfighter longer than I have!
Mine too :) July 2012.
Mine was June 2014. lol
I didn't want to sit through this initially, but now I'm crying in laughter. :') Niiiice job :D
this has always been one of my favourite hank videos
"If you sue me I will win." Well said.
I'm lactose intolerant, but I like ice cream...
I'm so sorry.
there is ice cream which doesn't have lactose inside of it....
This video always reminds me of how talented Hank is.... :D it'll always be one of my favorite vlogbrothers videos
Amazing how I learnt a lot, not what I was looking for but this is golden, even better.
What an amazing voice ;)
Hank uses the small F chord rather than the full barre chord. Wimp.
Not John, good try though
I'm not even going to pretend to be a regular to these videos. I just knew that one of them was John and the other was Hank and I had a 50/50 shot at being right. I tried.
I sometimes do. Actually most of the time, as the sound varies between the different versions. I only really use the barre chord if I'm playing a song mostly composed of barre chords, but honestly, all of those could've been, it was just impractical and unnecessary.
small F isnt for wimps. Dont pretend you never learned it.
That's a dick move, why does it matter what F chord he uses? And he is a sort of famous musician, and you aren't, so maybe he knows something you don't about that small F chord huh?
I love this. And I love that you did part of a Slipknot song, that pleased me.
This is the song i've been looking for every since i saw him sing it live in Dublin!!! It was SO GOOD live!!!! I got goosebumps :P I'm so happy!!!!! :D
The analysis of the Slipknot song is pretty subtle. It isn't obvious that they're using this set of changes as a base, but I think you're right. If you analyse Psychosocial in Am, then the verse is a VI(7) - iv cadence, followed by a turnaround of VI(7) - iv - v - i. This is all complicated by the fact that they're basically always playing 'power chords' with just 2 notes so its hard to figure out the overall structure. For example, in what I've called VI(7) they only play the b7 and the 11. For the v they play b3 and b13.
I honestly do not understand what you are saying. The verse for Psychosocial is based on a riff, with no particular chord progression. Am I missing something?
LOL the end screen!
Yes...i listen to slipknot and I'm a Nerdfighter. So hi Hank!
From the day you posted this till now I still show people this video to explain the Fitches progression/The ice cream changes. Thank you for never forgetting to be awesome. oh and if you made a video with more examples I promise I'd get y'all at least an extra 300 views due to my strong love for this.
Well done!
+Sl1pg8r - Daily Stuff and Things! XD sl1pg8r watches all thier videos.
SLIPKNOT!!!!
I'm stoked because this video just helped me advance my beginner guitar skills! So many songs just opened up to me now that I know I can play F! I'm so excited! One day I hope I can strum that fast in cool patterns and sing at the same time...
I am making my way from Jan 1, 2007 to the current day, and this is the very first vlogbros video that I ever saw! I feel caught up-ish. Love it!
I know why people like it.
I thought he was going to say Gangnam Style. Oh how the time passes (flies) by, and past memories meld together into one indistinguishable mess.
This was posted in 2011
That's the point. Gangnam Style was 2012, but it seems as if 2011 and 2012 melded together into one collective year... hence indistinguishable mess.
+Pranav Eswaran pretty cool you explained yourself calmly and politely. nice going
mickeynotmouse
:D
+Pranav Eswaran like a boss.
The end scene is my favorite thing- “If you sue me, I will win :-p”
Thank god for Hank Green
It makes me so happy that you included such an obscure song like She Has A Girlfriend Now by Reel Big Fish. I praise you for knowing and loving them!
Ah, yes. The fifties chord progression...C, D, F, G. My band mates and I play that all the time, and yes, Duke of Earl is one of them we play. We even call it "the fifties progression" and we use it to loosen up when we get bored of experimenting.
It's C, Am, F, G.
You are correct.
Or if you sing in a weird range like me, G, Em, C, D.
JogInTheFog Or if you want to apply it to any range, I-vi-IV-V.
Lactose intolerant people hate this chord progression. Hank's silly, but also adorable.
just learned about ice cream changes in guitar class and knew i had heard it somewhere….. a hank video from 11 years ago ahh yes.
It's 5.5 years later, and I'm listening to this on repeat because who doesn't love a good ice cream chord progression? I also love Axis of Awesome's "Four Chord Song." Thanks, Hank!
if you sue me, I will win :-p
well done sir *clap*........*clap*
When he sang Slipknot!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite Hank videos. Ever.
OMG Hank that was amazing. I was laughing when you sang Psychosocial, Hi, but I was crying when you sang Friday.
SLIPKNOT FAN SAYS HI AND YAY!!!
The Beatles- octopus's garden
i love the Beatles so much
12 years later and this video was such a trip.
Awesome! My brother and I did the same medley starting with Heart & Soul. Love your version!!!
How did Justin bieber's "baby" video get one billion views and this got half a million!
+Amiee Ann Because the ugly truth is that there are still more decepticons than nerdfighters in the world
SLIPKNOT!!! :D
Third time watching this and still one of my favorites. : )
I've spent a while trying to phrase this right, but here goes it... If something works this well, chances are people are going to come up with it independently of another. People will even make their own different but still great version on purpose. The Ice Cream changes in music, or like for movies the "Hero's Journey" format.
I listen to this as a whole song and I think it works quite well! It's a nice mix of everything!
