This is an idea I've had since I was a kid, and after watching Mike Cberts Diesel mini bike video I was inspired to put together my own! The frame has been around since I was 4 years old! At that point it was powered by a 3 hp Briggs and Stratton and is a Fox corporation, Trail Bug probably from the 60's or early 70's. The engine is a copy of a 10 hp Yanmar single cylinder Diesel engine and the turbo is similar to the one on my Honda CX-500 Turbo motorcycle. The engine runs at 3,600 rpm max and top speed so far is 39.3 mph.
Here's a description of 2 stroke & 4 stroke Diesel engines:
• How Diesel Engines Wor...
diesel smoke coming from a mini-bike makes me smile like a kid!
No
Bet the neighbors just love this guy
pleasecho2 no joking, absolutely
If Ihad dude as a neighbor, we'd end up best buds hated by the whole neighborhood.
haha, my neighbors hate me but they're stuck up pricks so I don't give a fuck
Bahahaha, sick. I love it. Especially the fact I'm used to seeing these things with the itty bitty 3-4hp engines and a whole lot of empty space in the frame, but with that engine shoehorned in there it's looking more like you're riding an engine, one that incidentally happens to have wheels attached to it.
Even 6 or 7 horsepower ones have space still lol
So was the goal to have a tow truck in the end? lol I like it. You could put a plow in front of that.
That's awesome. You should call it mini smog.
Man, i could do this all day, ride the back roads with this!!
I think what you're thinking is the exhaust is the intake from the turbo..? But what do I know..
LOVE the bike... Now you can literally smoke other minibikes.
Haha I love the puffs of smoke when you hit the gas from a standstill. Looks like it should be pulling a sled for distance on a dirt track. Sweet little bike!
When ridden, it will have 3 dipsticks.
I love this thing!!!
When I was in college grrrrrrrls used to actually fight over who I would take home because my Harley was soooo loud and vibrated soo much. They actually said that they would cum several times before we ever got to where we were going.
dude that thing is bad ass 😉
Actually this is a brand new engine. It came straight out of the crate for this build, what you're hearing is the detonation or knock that is common in older Diesel engines. It has a single-shot mechanical fuel injection system which are notoriously loud.
Cleaner than a Volkswagen.
N7 At least you can breathe near an American tailpipe.
Nekoja7 Freeride Motocross dum fuck
@Nekoja7 Freeride Motocross Hahaha your Both right
@@fairyheli2 ikr
Ha!
thats one awesome looking minibike and it seems pretty fast to. imagine adding a sidecart
hmm...think i can slap that engine on a dirt bike?
Dante Planeta I wish I could get a hold of about 5 more of them so I could do just that!
A diesel mini bike! That is by far the coolest mini bike i have ever seen!
that's a great little bike, no more pollution than a truck, or a bus. lots of fun.
Honda grom has some competition now
1000 mosquitos died in the making of this interesting turbo diesel smokey video 7yrs ago!! Definitely not compliant to Euro 5 Emission requirements
the low end power must be phenomenal on this mini bike
Thank you for the comment Jasper. It sure is, in fact it is very easy to lift the front wheel as you roll on the throttle.
I wonder how that turbo diesel minibike engine would work on an old softail Harley frame.
I have a diesel Royal Enfield with the same engine. Started out at 102 mpg (imperial gallon) under factory fuel settings, now, after adjusting the fuel screw & fine tuning, I'm getting 166 mpg without trying. No loss of performance.
I Would not want that by my Nutz , I seen one of them motors blow up!
Is there a general rule for how much boost is too much, for a small diesel engine?
@@observingrogue7652 Yeah, I'd say under 5 psi in most cases. Little diesels like this one are air-cooled, so I would think the pistons are within an inch or so of the exterior part of the block, so they couldn't be very thick. 5 psi is where I'd put the cap on boost and play it safe.
@@wyattlarrick3246
Ok. Thank you.
You seen it
@@hondamonkeylover2931 well its chinese so it will blow lol.. I wish cummins made like a 0.5L turbo diesel or Caterpillar
Coolest mini-bike ever. I wish I had one.
love the smoke!
The turbo is a IHI RHB-31. It is the smallest production turbo made and is what's found on a Honda CX-500 Turbo motorcycle.
you should build a kit and sell it
Wow I never thought I would see a Minibike rolling coal
cool; need to put something like that in a small street legal motorcycle or moped & get 100 mpg on the road :-)
InfiniteMPG much more then 100 if tuned right.
Where the hell was this mini bike when I was 12 ?!....kwel build bro ...goes to show we all have that kid in us still !.....peace
Torquey little thing!
Thanks! I haven't touched the injection pump at all. The engine was brand new never run when I put it in that frame. All that smoke is just how it was designed from the factory.. Pretty wild that they let it pump that much fuel in todays "smokeless" society.
best mini ive ever seen
Hi turbosuperiority, may be you dont know, but there were some diesel bikes made during the fifties. I remeber Gall, and Lohman. They were sold as auxiliary engines to clip on bikes. Under names like "Lohmann hilfsmotor" or even Lohmann diesel, there are here on ytb some interesting videos about. They were delicate jewels. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for the nice comment! I have not heard of those engines but I will look them up. About the only Diesel motorcycle that I was aware of was the Royal Enfield Diesel.
Be interesting to see how this bike performs with the turbo removed, that way you'd know if the turbo has actually boosted performance or just over fueled the engine hence the black cloud following you around.
Anyway good work I like it, looks fun
your profile picture speaks the truth
You are just jealous cuz he is rolling coal on his turbo mini chopper while you are sitting in a cubicle. JK but not really
+Mantis Garage I'm jealous that he lives in a country where you can ride a mini bike up and down the road without some penis calling the police.
I think what he has created is cool and I admire his engineering ability
+Abe Normal so you live in scandinavia/france/germany or england?
+William Jenssen Yes you guessed correctly, England a country where you dare not fart in a public area without fear of imprisonment... well maybe that's a exaggeration but there are too many silly laws that stop one from having fun
Looks like a perfect alternative to those bikes you dont have to register. I love me some diesel. And if I lived in a city I would def have you build one for me.
You should have put it on a go cart
Thanks Matt! I think this motor in a Ruckus would be amazing! If I ever find a Ruckus without a motor for cheap or free I'll have to do a re-power with Diesel!
I would turn up the fuel then you got a whole coal mine! Lol
Trx 300 how do you turn it up to roll coal
Antonio APC79 you can't, everything is pre set, would have to disassemble the pump and hand build or find a similar replacement element. Could possibly change the injector nozzle
@Indosarnia no idea, possibly different injectors
TurboS, thank you for that. You have restored my faith in humanity and the individual! Happy New Year!
People ask why i say CUZ WHY THE FUCK NOT?
That has to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen I want one and it dumps pretty good to!
the only thing I dislike was the fuel tank....put it under the seat
I agree with you on the location of the fuel tank. The only problem with putting it under the seat is, that's where the turbo is and there's not much extra space.
yeah, turbos are not small....especially on a minibike lol
one final thought: unless this is your daily transport to work, maybe a smaller fuel tank would be more accommodating? something like the fuel tank from a 2 cycle gas trimmer? it might even sit well behind your seat, because of it's curved shape. okay, i'm done giving my not-asked-for 2¢ now! later
that turbo though is the world's smallest turbo, width and depth it is the same as a dollar bill.
Waylon Richardson where can I see it
Scaly Raptor It is under the seat.
Hahaha, there's somwthing that makes me laugh with this mini ad then there's nostalgia from it taking off. Love it.
in the end of the day you will smell like diesel. but nice work!
This is a true statement! Thanks for the comment.
thats good . Better then smelling like a girl!
Shun Takara just need a cup of coffee and the smell of diesel in the morning.
Shun Takara Yeah thats what we call "Cologne".
A dab of diesel on the shirt and a bit of gun oil behind the ears and you can get your "Man card"
i build a motorcycle using my stingray bike scwinn with chinese 49 cc engine i hate it.. and my hands always dirty
Thanks for the message, the engine is an industrial engine from a generator or pressure washer. They sell a smaller version of it too that is 6 hp. Either one seems to work great for a go kart.
Rolls more than a dmax lol jk
Joey Roberts hey rolling is optional and an expensive upgrade but it can be done for free on a cold start
Way cool mod to that mini bike, love the ingenuity!
Love it, too bad these things arent street legal.
Hey thanks for the comment and question. The engine I used is a clone of the 10 hp Yanmar engine. I bought it online and they are indeed available from a few different sellers. I imagine the engine can't be sold in California but I've never seen anywhere that they are controlled in the rest of the country. You commonly see them for sale as powerplants for generators and pressure washers.
Smokes worse then my 2 stroke
It is good to see a young man experimenting and learning. Keep it up!!!
lol, too cool ! first mini bike i have ever heard with turbo whistle. nice build
Hey, sorry for the delay in responding but yes it does actually work. I've been able to make over 10 psi but you have to get a pretty good load on the engine which is somewhat hard to do. The compressor discharge pipe gets too hot to touch after riding it for a while.
Thanks for the comment and I wasn't sure how it was going to work either but I got the smallest turbocharger I could find and it definitely makes a noticeable difference. If you load the engine down, say on a steep hill, it easily makes 10 lbs. of boost.
This is a like! Very impressive, that seven pounds boost should come in mighty handy on a generator in Colorado at 7000 feet or higher.. You did most of the work proving this turbo was a decent match! While other young guys are doing much of nothing, you are developing some impressive fab skills.. looks great!
One of the coolest Mini's I've seen yet. Nice job
This is the most badass American thing in the world
Thanks Dane!
Dang, that's runs very smoothly! Well done.
Thanks!
By the white smoke and because you have turbocharged it you need to advance the injection pump, do this by taking the pump of the block and removing the smalist shim reasemble and the smoke should be a darker grey, if needs be you may need to take out a couple, this will give you alot more power as well
Good question, I believe there are several places to order them from and I think I actually bought mine from an ebay seller that had a bunch of them. I remember I had a hard time finding a "tapped" shaft model versus the "tapered" shaft design so that I could mount the torq-a-verter.
Gotta take the old fedora off for you m'boy! Nice proportioning, balance and selecting stuff that gibes nicely. Good for you!!
Now it just needs a stack and the pump turned up lol. Seriously though that's pretty cool. Good job
His voice with the vibrations. 😂😂😂😂
I agree, I have seen 10 psi but that's about all I can muster from that little turbo. The wastegate is connected too, but on a bench test the actuator doesn't budge until about 15 psi.
That tiny chain seems like a bad way to top off an otherwise nice build. I have jewelry thicker then that final drive chain..
Hey thanks for the comment and way to be observant. That rear wheel, hub, tire & chain is all original and is super old. A modern final drive would indeed be a nice upgrade.
Very well done I think Jim carry would defiantly be impressed, I am
I'm thinking a 453T Detroit would be great!
Ebay sells the engine and turbocharger, the frame has been in the family for a LONG time.
Cool. looks like its got a lot of torque too. Nice project.
not if you use the original governor throttle control [I believe most have a red rubber cap on them] and find a way to limit its reverse movement while still allowing it to go all the way back to kill it. If you had a throttle stop on the injector pump shaft coming out near the base of the block it injects the same amount of fuel all the time and cant compensate for minor changes in operating conditions, so it either over speeds or stalls.
I love! I like the smell of diesel smoke. As a bonus you will still have transportation if we suffer an EMP attack!😲🤔🙂
I did the same thing, except no turbo and a shitty tav30 clutch that eats belts. Ended up removing a spring from the clutch driver to engage early.
Hvguy that's a good idea. I think it's about time for a new belt for me too, but this setup has lasted a long time now.
This is perhaps the coolest thing on CZcams. A diesel minibike coal roller! I love diesels and I own 3 diesel vehicles. The only thing I'd watch on this bike is the breathing in of the diesel vapor. Some may not ever worry about it but the latest studies concerning the inhalaition of diesel exhaust is that the fumes can be and have been cancerous. Jus' sayin. Could you run biodiesel in this thing????
That is true, if you can keep the exhaust flowing strong the turbo will have no problems spooling.
That's awesome! Such a cute lil turbo too
If you forget to push the compression release lever, forget it. You will literally lift the whole thing off the ground with the pull cord before you'll turn the engine over.
In theory pretty much any engine can be turbocharged it's just a matter of trying to match the appropriate size turbocharger to the engines airflow and horsepower. The Diesel worked pretty well because it flows a lot of air for its size due to the fact that it has high compression, and it has an internal oil pump which is also very important.
Now you'll need to start the, "The Grand National Overpowered Mini Bike Shoot Out", to see how it really compares.
Thanks! The turbo is big for this engine and laggy but definitely gives it more power when it starts to spool.
Yes, yes, and yes. It does electric start I just haven't found a place to mount the battery. I do electric start it sometimes with a jumper box, but it starts so easy with the pull starter that electric starting isn't too necessary.
That is the coolest thing I have ever seen!!!
Ryan I am impressed my friend!!!! Put some lights and a tag on it and save some fuel on your commute to driving your DC-10! LOL
A good effort lad, you should be proud of that.
I'm from aurora too man that's a pretty sweet build
Dude keep it up!!! Great. These type of projects make live worth living.
Thanks for the comment!
How much financially do you have in it? Where did you get the engine? Want to build one for myself.
You're exactly right! While I definitely do not consider myself an environmentalist, it is nice knowing that, like the Hummer H1 which was powered by a Diesel engine, I am polluting a lot less these days compared with my Gasoline burning counterparts like the Hummer H2, H3 or your average Gasoline lawn mower. It's nice that my NOx, HC, and CO emissions are a fraction of what they would be in a Gas engine, as are the toxic chemicals like Benezene and Formaldehyde that are being emitted.
Thanks for the quick response! Also looks like that's the rout I will have to go for my project. Thanks Again!
When a diesel pumps black smoke it can burn the piston very quickly. It's very easy to wind back the amount of fuel injected, There is a horizontal screw under the engine speed controls with a security wire attached. Wind this screw in until it very lightly touches the sprung plunger for the governor control. The engine will now be virtually smokeless even under full load. If power dips too much, just wind the screw out one eighth of a turn then road test. Factory settings are too rich on these.
Thanks for the nice comment! I do appreciate it.
You're correct and I too was concerned with that, but these small Diesels run at almost the same rpm's as a comparable gasoline engine. There isn't as great a difference in rpm as bigger engines.
That is awesome, and I bet the neighbors all love it too!
@99cumminskid Thanks for the comment! And no technically this is not street legal in Colorado because it's over 50 cc's and has no nights/mirrors/etc. I did however pass a motorcycle cop a while back, in front of an elementary school no less who just stared me down, and didn't follow me. So hopefully if I ever do get pulled over, they'll just tell me to take it home..
Getting basicly 40 mph out of it before you've really sorted it for all its speed is pretty damn good , I'm making a rough guess but how many MPG do you get ? 120 ? regardless it'll get great mileage & you can even make your own biodiesel . Great job & wishing you many years of safe & fun riding
Percy Barbarossa Thank you for the comment. It does get great mileage but I've never actually calculated it. These little Diesel engines are so economical despite having great torque.
Diesel vehicles aren't even inspected in most states. Means you don't even need lighting or a speedo on that thing. Try registering it in another state, then registering it in your own. Only problem might be seat height but oh well, you can add a few feet :)
Thanks! It's a blast to ride and gets a lot of looks.
Hey man, let's go ride. Cruise up 285 into the mountains and putter around some trails.
It is definitely unburnt fuel and supposedly you can re-shim the injection pump to turn the fuel down a bit, I just haven't messed with it.
You did a really good job on that mini bike man. Keep it up.!
Gathered all the parts before the build and spent a few weeks assembling it a little bit at a time.
