Once upon a time, the Empress Dowager lived in Gojo, on the east side of Kyoto, and a woman lived across from her to the west. And there was a man who deeply loved the woman, regardless of her status. The man used to visit the woman frequently, but around the 10th day of the new year, the woman moved to another place. I had heard about his new place, but it wasn't a place a normal person could go to, so I spent the rest of my life missing him.
On New Year's Day the following year, just as the plum blossoms were in full bloom, I remembered what had happened last year and went to the place where the woman had once lived, standing and sitting looking at the mansion, but it was deserted. The mansion looked completely different from last year. I sat between the uncovered boards until the moon set, reciting songs while remembering last year.
Where did that spring moon disappear, leaving only my thoughts in my heart?
After chanting like this, when the night finally came, I went home crying.
