the past, there was a man. It is said that the man secretly visited a woman who lived in the Gojo area in the east of Kyoto. Since it was a place that one had to go to in secret, he didn't enter through the gate, but walked through the mud wall that had collapsed while the children were playing and climbing over it.
Although he didn't attract much attention, he went there so often that the woman's husband finally found out about him. The husband then placed a guard at the mud wall to watch every night. So after that, no matter how many times a man went there, he was unable to meet a woman. So he wrote this song like this.
Please let me see that woman. Keep me awake all night.
As the woman sang the poem in this way, she was completely moved and lost in thought, and it is said that her husband also forgave her when he saw her.
In reality, a man was secretly visiting Empress Nijo, and the Empress's older brothers, concerned about his appearance, placed a guard there to keep an eye on him.
