Today we're talking about Disney Channel's music acts, specifically the ones who signed with Hollywood Records. We'll talk about what happened with their records contracts, and why it seems like after a certain point, a lot of artists struggled to find succes with their pop careers of their predecessors. We'll talk artists including Sabrina Carptenter, Ross Lynch, CoCo Jones, and more. We'll also talk about artists who worked for Disney, but never signed with Hollywood Records like China Anne McClain, Olivia Rodgrigo, Dove Cameron, and Laura Marano.

I think another big factor that brought the downfall was that the next big generation after the Miley/Selena/Demi era weren’t putting out good music or shows with lasting power.
I also noticed the shows seemed to be getting more and more childish where as the OG shows weren’t afraid to be edgy or tackle serious topics.

Okay as someone who has watched Disney Channel since from 2006-2018ish, this statement is true to an extent. Some shows that came after did have serious topics/moments however the impact wasn't made because nobody was really watching so it never really got talked about. And the only shows that were good got canceled after only 3 seaons

Shows were becoming more childish because the viewer base was getting younger. It's the same situation for Nickelodeon. For many Zillenials/Gen Z their last show era which they watched on cable was the Victorious-Jessie alignment around 2012-2013. Despite the difference in age, from children to teenagers, we all stopped at the same time because we were switching platforms. CZcams, Netflix etc. So the people who were left were the ones that weren't olde enough to get unfettered use to the internet. Before tv shows needed to cater all the way to early high school age, now it was just elementary, so shows got more childish to match the new viewer base.

Social media is the reason. Almost every Disney act who was popular in the 2000s have either had a successful music, acting, or both careers. The 2000s was the birth of social media, but wasn't as prominent as it is now expect Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace and other social media platforms buried in the 2000s. I don't think the formula can be replicated again because the predictability and mystery of celebrity and the pop star is gone. I can't think of any singer that's considered a pop star in modern times because none of them have international appeal.

Todd in the shadows came up with a similar point when it came to rock stars and pop stars. In the 70s/80s, rock stars where these Larger than Life, over the top, mysterious figures which you can only catch a glimpse in behind interviews but then that all changed whenever Smells Like Teen Spirit released. Thus forever changing the Rock scene, killing the hair metal genre, and rock stars went from Larger than Life celebrities to humble we're just like you celebrities.
A similar thing happened to pop stars in the 2010s with lorde's royals, changing how pop stars were perceived.
The only question is why hasn't it happened to rap stars yet? 🤔

    • @kamsismith
      @kamsismith Před 7 měsíci +6

I watch Todd in the Shadows sometimes, but he does make a valid point. Rap stars, there’s not a mystery for them either in modern times whereas back in the 70s and the 2000s, the only time you heard from them were through interviews and TV appearances. Nowadays, it's social media, The Shade Room, TMZ, CZcams, and gossip magazines.

2000-2008 was such a sweet spot for Disney Channel, I could cry how nostalgic it was. The DCOMs, the musical machines built by Raven/Cheetah Girls, Hillary, HSM, Kenny Ortega, Aly and AJ, Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, etc. Even their associated artists like Jordan Pruitt and Jessie McCartney who would feature on Radio Disney--this era was the channel's sweet spot.
I don't know what exactly happened, but 2000-2008 had stronger triple threats. There are some contenders in the new class (Olivia, Coco) but the music machine built by Cheetah Girls and HSM is not...there. Descendants were the last DCOMs I tuned into.

The last Disney Star who had a music career I paid attention to (besides Olivia Rodrigo) was Selena Gomez when she released her debut album in 2009 and I was hearing songs like Naturally and Tell Me Something I Don't Know during commercial breaks while watching Disney Channel. Going back and listening to some of the Disney stars' early albums, it was interesting to see how almost all of their music styles were some variant of G-rated pop rock during the 2000s. As a big fan of all types of rock, I really enjoyed the 2000s albums from Demi, Selena, Miley, and the Jonas Brothers, and enough of their distinct sensibilities shine through for their music to still feel different from each other. Though, I still wonder how much the label influenced their sound, considering all of these artists would change their styles after leaving Disney.

I've been a fan of Jesse McCartney's for over 20 years now and it still frustrates me that Have It All was never properly released and promoted. But Jesse still performs and makes music, actually he just released a new song the other day called Faux Fur. He also got married not too long ago. He seems happy and has been very unproblematic which is probably why he's not talked about a lot in the media. Also fun fact because it seems a lot of people don't know this but Jesse McCartney co-wrote Leona Lewis' song Bleeding Love. The song was originally supposed to be on Jesse's Departure album but the label didn't like it so it wasn't used. But then it fell in Leona Lewis lap and it became a huge hit. And I just remembered that Jesse's debut album Beautiful Soul turns 20 this year, it really does not feel that long ago.

Farm-The McClain Sisters, Shake It Up-Zendaya, Jessie-the whole cast, Coco Jones.

Just thinking about Zendaya possibly owing Hollywood Records another album, hoping her lawyers get her out of it but if it came down to it she could do an album that coincides with a Disney property like Phil Collins did with the Tarzan soundtrack.
That said it would make the most sense for the album to align with a property that works with her brand bc Disney proper and Disney Channel don't anymore. Maybe a Hulu original film or Marvel property on Disney's side since she's already associated with Marvel on the Sony side.

The work was loved by the masses ($$$) and critically acclaimed, winning an Oscar and Grammy.
If Zendaya does that to for a Marvel or Hulu property it would at least have to hit in the sense of that quick aforementioned critical acclaim or a slow burn acclaim that cult followings get which is money in the long run too. Just my thoughts sorry that was a lot.

Great video as always Naomi!! I think u touched on this on ur video about the disapearance of the teen popstar, but it's not lost on me that the decline in success of the traditional disney popstar co-incided with both "real" young songwriter-singers taking over the pop scene (ie; Lorde, Taylor Swift, Alessia Cara, Billie Eillish, Olivia Rodrigo) AND the rise of more unfiltered social media creators grabbing the attention of younger and younger audiences. Once young audiences became so acustomed to artists so close to their own age singing about more mature and relatable issues, comparing more *visibly* manufactured artists, particularly with the "disney star" label being demonized, inherently turned them off. Especially when the music in Hollywood Records inherently has an element of artistic censorship. I'd say a general aspect of magnetisim in art is recognizing there's an element of truth behind it and in the current social landscape, where the line between childhood and adulthood seems more and more blurred, more appropiate content geared towards younger crowds isn't really taken seriously or considered genuine, even by kids themselves.

I actually find the rise of kpop in the west super interesting in terms of the contrast it creates with these values. By most accounts, kpop artists are more clearly manufactured than perhaps any popular artist in all of western music history. Not denying that there's singer-songwriters and contribution from some performers, but it sort of wears its company involvement on its sleeve. A well-documented training system, complex choreographed routines, censorship within fan-interactions, stans of groups even before music is released, and even fans of the companies themselves. So many people adopted a model of the complete opposite extreme of what western society seems to value in music at the moment. It's a model that's looked down upon when seeing disney stars/teen idols, and people go wild with accusations of musicians being industry-plants, yet a lot of the same people go crazy for kpop.

Something I actually noticed that is not really related to the music directly but is more about the popularity of Disney channel stars is it used to be a thing on CZcams around 2013-16 for adults to buy teen magazines and make fun of them and what I noticed was that when Zendaya, Bella Thorne, And Ross Lynch would be on the covers of them or inside of them the adults reading the magazines would be aware of who they were but when Dove Cameon, Rowan Blanchard, or Sabrina carpenter would appear in the same magazine they would have no clue who they were. Which as some who watched Disney during that era actually makes a lot of sense to me because I remember seeing those three (Ross, Bella and zendaya) a lot more in the wild outside of Disney channel than the other 3. whether it be actual Disney like Ross lynch’s cameo in muppets most wanted or just commercials for things not Disney that were still tween or teen aimed products. They also appeared a lot more on mainstream invterview shows than the others like Zendaya and Ross lynch were both on Ellen and Ross lynch performed on jimmy kimmel. So interesting that those three who’s shows came out around 2010-11 were bigger than the other 3 who’s shows were 2013-14.

Raven Symone never had the same success as Hilary Duff and later Miey Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez musically. Raven was never given her own arena tour. She would only perform at Six Flags while other Disney girls was headlining big tours. I loved Raven's music and even had her third album This Is My Time. Raven was not treated right by Hollywood Records. Her music wasn't promoted. She made great music.
The McClain Sisters could have been bigger if they was sign to another label. The talent was there. They had the potential. I wish someone would have done for them what Beyonce did for Chloe and Halle.

It's still shocking to me that they never promoted Raven Symone the way they should have because I had her second album and it hit as a child. Plus she had already made music in the past and was a part of the Cheetah girls and did songs for That's So Raven. Like they had a powerhouse who has been a powerhouse since she was a child and they fumbled the bag

They had six different musical shows and only managed to create two successful acts with Big Time Rush and Ariana Grande. I think Selena had it the best, she had moderate success for all her years with them, every album more successful than the previous and at last she released two hits (Come and get it and The heart wants what it wants) and then she left and got a "serious" contract with Interscope. Miley had bigger success with Disney than Selena but Can't be tamed underperformed and her overall image change left a bad impression (it worked at the end though). And I think Demi's career was actually hurt by her staying with Hollywood records years after her show ended. She could've done so much more.

@@Yola.violet598 they literally said that in their post 💀 I think they mean Selena’s “relationship” with HR was the best (as in she was getting the proper promo, success and attention from them) because while with them her success steadily grew every era rather than declining and she was always scoring massive singles (thru sales) which helped her career carry over into changing to Interscope while keeping her dedicated fanbase. Thanks to that Selena has had impressive steady longevity for over 10 years while Miley was massive on Disney and still a household name but after Bangerz, her success dwindled severely and she would get hits every once in a while. The Billboard decade + all time charts showcase that!

17:54 I freaking love Sabrina Carpenter’s music. I think when the first 2 albums dropped “Eyes Wide Open” & “Evolution” they were pushed way more because “Girl Meets World” was doing good. But once the show ended they didn’t promote her as much anymore which really hurt her career. I feel like she’s very pop & for what ever reason people don’t like pop music as much as rnb or hip hop & then call it childish. Her current album “Emails I Can’t Send” is doing WAY better because it’s not just pop & it’s actually being promoted. Her audience is very mixed which might be a reason it doesn’t connect to every one. Like me & her r the same age but she also has kids following her so that’s a big factor

I got so scared seeing Sabrina in the thumbnail but this video actually delved into a lot of research and had accurate information that I didn't expect to hear from someone who wasn't a Sabrina fan. I would also like to mention that her last two albums released after her Disney show ended definitely were underpromoted, her final one getting the absolute worst treatment while her album before that saw some traction with Sue Me getting some attention outside of her fanbase (though obviously not enough for it to completely blow up). Her biggest songs to come out during her Disney era would have to be Can't Blame A Girl For Trying and especially Thumbs, which still gets brought up today due to the confusing and memorable opening lines lol. I remember seeing those videos play a lot during Disney's commercial breaks, something her last albums lacked. So despite the ratings going down, it really does go to show that they didn't hesitate to abandon you once you started to venture out of their network.

I thought we're never getting another movie like Hannah Montana The Movie again. Sure there have been other movies based on kids shows and one other movie based on a live action kids show that premiered on the big screen which was Power Rangers 2017 but I'm talking about a movie based on a live action kids show where the cast plays the same characters in the movie and releasing on the big screen. Let alone the fact that this was during the show's run! That's never gonna happen again. We're never getting another movie trilogy like The Fairly OddParents Wishology again. And we're never getting movies like Ben 10 Race Against Time and Alien Swarm again. This is why I say those movies pesked!
