Just sublime....Gish still blows my mind, one of the great debuts and arguably the best debut of the 90's. Their first 3 albums were a legendary run, and even though I love almost all of their stuff, nothing could match that era. Billy is right, it wouldn't matter if he released the greatest album ever right now, people are so nostalgic and stuck in the past. It's true.

first Pumkins album, heard it on cassette in Oct. of 91'. they were then not too well known, new on the scene, yet getting some exposure on MTV alternative. i was a lonely 19 year old junior college dropout, and it made an imprint on me, gave me a voice. what we noticed about it was that the guitars had a late 60s over-driven tone on them, and not the familiar metal distortion of 80s and early 90s, so our frame of reference was that it was a little more like Hendrix, with that kind of free spirit to it, yet still crashing and hard, with a kind of an emotionally dark-overcast vibe. the quieter middle section was my favorite, definitely hippie acid-esque. Nirvana had not yet hit, but would soon.

I remember first hearing it in '91 or '92 too, when I was 17ish. I bought the "Gish" CD at the same time as Ministry "Psalm 69." I had been into old school punk rock for years through my older brother, but long thought then-contemporary music was lame, and was always looking for edgy loud guitar alternative music. Janes Addiction was the big discovery, followed by Soundgarden "Louder than Love" and a few others ( FnM, RHCP, the Cult, etc.) prior to Nirvana. I loved the riff on this one, but only liked the 1st 3 songs on Gish. Siamese Dream though, that became my favorite record or the era. Billy, kinda verbose and gangly and sorta uncool, was more relatable to me than Kurt, and anyway the music hit me deeper.

Man the marketing back then was so simple . Find the guitar tone then thrash out a few chords with some simple catchy riffs over the top . Throw a sexy blond chick on stage and add some acidy psychedelic visuals and you just reel the dollars in . Try it again now the markets ready for it .

@klmeer smp you are totally wrong, yes D'arcy was a good looking chick,
but that had Nothing to do with the Pumpkins success. The MUSIC kicked ass, at the time it was something New people had never heard before.
      It rocked your Soul.
You can throw 4 hot blonds at me all day long, if there music sucks, it won't last 10 minutes.
When I listen to The Smashing Pumpkins 25 + years later, it still rocks me as much as the first Time I heard it !! Never gets old, THAT is what made them great! and still loved today in 2018 !

I remember seeing this on TBS Night Tracks in 1991.....I was so blown away went right out and bought Gish.....NOBODY knew who the SP were on that first album.....I remember telling anybody who would listen how great this band was....and most times they were like.....never heard of them.....then like 2 years later with Siamese Dream.....the flood gates busted open and EVERYBOY discovered them......but for those of us that caught on early......this album is still special.
I have that same feeling for Facelift and Bad Motor Finger as well.

A million years ago I was 15 tripping on acid with my best friend making art the carpet would be water and then flowers... 120 Mins was on just background noise
This video came on. The song was incredible we wanted to hear it again. But this was the stone age so we had to wait until we could get to tower records by her house.. I think we paid for the Gish cassette with quarters out of her Moms giant change jar. Phenomenal record.
