Ban Uber and Lyft!!! I bet you would like that. No one is forcing you to get an Uber or Lyft. Th epricing of Uber and Lyft is just like the stock market. If there is a demand then the price surges and if there is no demand, fare declines and normalizes.

Two tunnels take EVERY train in and out of this city. During hurricane Sandy, these two tunnels completely flooded. They are both in EXTREME levels of disrepair. In May of 2014, Amtrak announced that by 2034 one or both tunnels would need to be shut down. This section was built in 1904, and the electrical supply lines were added in 1908. Since that day, minor daily repairs are all that have been completed. The electrical system is old, and when it goes out needs to be checked fuse by fuse by a person on the line. The tunnel itself is also crumbling and decaying, creating water leaks in particular areas.
They were asking for assistance in 2014, and were ignored. NYS began plans immediately. Creating two new tunnels that run parallel to these two. When they open, closing these two for a full renovation and repair. This would mean that we would end with 4 functioning tunnels, and a lot less daily stress.
This was placed in front of the funding approval board for NY, NJ, AMTRAK, and the Federal Government in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021. They hit a MAJOR SNAG, New Jersey doesn’t want to pay. The tunnel does come out onto their land, but they disagreed with every amount proposed. In 2022 The USDOT, AMTRAK, and state of NY HAD to move forward without funding approval from NJ. If NY goes into debt, it’s better than a tunnel collapsing as people are entering or leaving our city.
Now, the new tunnels have been under construction- they are still about 8 years from being completed. It may sound awful, but it is my genuine belief that everything is done EFFICIENTLY, and calmly regarding these two tunnels. If ANYONE has a problem with the fact that they are malfunctioning, then they haven’t been paying attention. They should call their NJ state representatives.
If you think ANYONE is going to jump through a hoop just to, what, get you home? Grow up. It’s not going to happen.

Amtrak sucks. I took the 11:40am train on 2/25/2024 from Miami to NY and was supposed to arrive about 730pm on 2/26/2024. Did not arrive until almost midnite because of delays (freight train broke down about an hour after leaving Miami) and one of the sleeper cars catching on fire as it approached the DC station. They kept everyone on the train for about one and half hours and would not give us any information unless asked. The major problems for Amtrak is the tracks that are used does not belong to them but to the freight train companies and the government pays to use these lines. The frieght trains have prioprity over Amtrak. In other words if there are several frieght trains on a certain line along with Amtrak at the same time, Amtrak has to wait until those trains pass before continuing. That's one main reason why they're always behind schedule. The second, Amtrak is still stuck in 1970s and no effort by the Fed or State governments to improve. If the train engine is turned off as it was in DC, there is no way to flush the toilets and air conditioning does not work. It also ran out of water for the toilets, so imagine being on a train from DC to NY Penn Station and smelling the toilets.

I am glad I no longer live in NJ and take this to get into NYC. When Chris Christie canceled in 2010 the ARC project because if cost too much going from $8 million to $12 million in 2010 which would have built another tunnel under the river, replaced the bridge leading to it, and upgraded some tracks and then Hurricane Sandy hit - it made the existing infrastructure even less reliable and travel between the two states deteriorate more. Now with the new $16 billion project upgrade the region with a new tunnel (building off of the partially built canceled tunnel), new bridge, and new track it won't be for another few years before it is all replaced with new, modern equipment unimpacted by salt water from hurricane damage. It is going to be bad for a few more yrs.

They made that a straight, high speed rail line that is still operational today built in the early 1990s. They rebuilt a bridge in CT when it collapsed in 1995 killing a dozen people. It is still standing today. The Skyway Bridge near Tampa collapsed when a tanker crashed into it in 1980. It was rebuilt 5 years later and is still standing today. It is possible to build things well - just the effort has to be made to do so.

Yeah, this wouldn't happen almost at all in most Asian countries with its excellent train systems. Definitely not as frequently as it does with NJTransit/Amtrak

1:45 the PATH system was likely over crowded because of all of the NJTransit disruptions

PATH was crowded and many times the trains were delayed like 10 minutes. PATH trains especially at night get delayed heavily.

  • @stephenhosmer9444

We have ALL SUFFERED from Amtrak chaos and delays--many times! And sometimes their staff people are so rude and defensive about THEIR problems. European trains are so easy to use and deal with, but we can only DREAM about them over here in God-Bless America with its rat-infested rotting infrastructure and poorly-trained staff. AND, these incompetents NOW want to raise fares for their all-too-often lousy service! Capitalism works badly in America; we need some efficient Scandinavian democratic socialism to clean up our persistent problems.
