  • The Toyota HiLux has now gained a flagship model called the HiLux Rugged X, designed to compete with the HSV Colorado SportsCat and the Ford Ranger Raptor. It has heaps of new off-roading kit but not a bigger engine! So does the Rugged X go far enough? Tom heads to the Flinders Ranges to find out.
    What do you think of the new Hilux models? Do you want a diesel V6 in the Toyota HiLux? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments.

    Hey tom my grandparents just bought a VW golf last Thursday how long does it usually take to get the car from the shipping yard to dealer and get the tint, paint protection and fabric protection?

    It's actually coming in at a pretty good price point for Toyota. The rock sliders/bash plates/snorkel and rated recovery points already make this thing the choice if you intend to go off-road. I also love that they have decided to rid of the tacky chrome trims. I'd be happy with it, as for power if you don't care too much about the factory warrantee these engines do really well with a tune and a slightly larger exhaust.

    • @Abu7929
      @Abu7929 Před 6 lety +1

      I'v got a feeling they may not really be rock sliders, but rather 'heavy duty' side steps. I'll ring ARB and ask when I get around to it as I want some for my SR5, but I have asked ARB before for my other trucks and they didn't do sliders that are designed to carry the weight of the car

      Abu7929 oh OK, in saying that I have the arb side steps and I've dumped it on rocks heaps up at mansfield. So far so good, they're pretty sturdy underneath mate and do the job.

    I understand why you say to pick up the manual for gear choices off-road. But isn’t that the same thing with the triptronic gearbox in the auto. you can select the gears? Or is that too much strain on the box?

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  Před 5 lety

      We've found that the HiLux's auto 'manual mode' can be unresponsive to gear demands if the computer doesn't like what you are asking for. It's a bad tiptronic. We'd stick to the 6MT where you have full control.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, it is winch compatible. And with regard to power I am speaking relatively. At the >$60K price point we're really starting to expect more than 130kW. It just feels lethargic, towing or not.

    • @Abu7929
      @Abu7929 Před 6 lety +3

      Lethargic? This thing gets up and moves. Sometimes take a bit more right peddle to get it up past 80 or 90 if you have a big trailer or van on the back going up a long hill but push the power button and you're outa there, this little motor makes everything look too easy on road and off

      @Abu7929 Před 6 lety +2

      I tow a dual axle trailer and a 2 ton van and the cruise control at 110 is perfect even up hill. Maybe you are comparing it to some sort of 7 litre 4 tonne American thing, but as far as Australia goes and the dual cab segment in particular I don't know where comments like this come from, maybe the petrols, maybe never owned one etc. An acquaintance has got a ranger, his is good too but her reckons he has to quick shift down a gear to maintain 110 sometimes, never with this

    If you intend on doing interdependent review on this vehicle and want the general public to take away some useful important information I think the problem with the DPF filter on some of the Toyota diesel range would have been very relevant when considering purchasing a Toyota Hilux model which has this problem as I have found while researching. Only now have Toyota decided to introduce the DPF switch in new models as of 23rd August 2018 to my knowledge? So check to be sure. Great vehicle, but over priced and really needed a updated engine..I am seriously looking at going Ford Wildtrack even though I know they are a close pretender but at least they are making an effort to get my business and $67000 is not small change! I have 3 Toyota's and love them but they really need to get back to the Reliable, Unbreakable, standard because I don't get that " OH WHAT A FEELING" anymore, apart from my Toyota troopy 78 series turbo Diesel RV which is the only reason I am still with Toyota. Sorry for long comment.

This is why Toyota can charge a Toyota tax with impunity and get away with not providing any standard safety features these days available with other vehicles at half the cost of owning a Toyota.

    Toyota have done a superb job dressing these up with some heavy duty accessories but I think the Ranger is still miles ahead with more driver assist technology and an overall better looking interior/exterior. The game has changed and there is no doubt why the Ranger is the number 1 selling 4X4 in Australia. The new refreshed Ranger range will be hitting the showroom floor soon and will again set the bar. Not to mention the Raptor will be the big brother amongst the lot.

    6:21 You can hear in his voice and see in the steering wheel how effective the suspension isn't....
    I have been doing a lot of looking into the Hilux SR vs 2019 Triton GLS for my next truck and the Triton is surprisingly coming out on top especially when you consider the price differences, better fuel economy, better power to weight ratio, better gearing in the new 6 speed auto, better stock suspension performance, maneuverability and tighter turning, on-road and at speed handling, on-road 4WD setting, cabin length/rear seat leg room, additional safety and tech accessories that aren't even in the top model Hilux and Ranger, better in back carrying capability and no BS about realistic tow weight. I have driven Hilux's for years but if I am honest I think it's time for a change...
    The Hilux has some stupid flaws given the off-road usage. Look where the rear seat grab handles are - Right at skull level. I wonder how many people will smash their noggins on those? Again the Triton uses higher handles that flip up and above head height when not held onto.
    In fact now I lay out in writing I think my mind is made up...

      @rockedits60 Před 5 lety +1

      There's a reason Hilux is mainly used for fleet vehicles throughout the country. They're unbreakable. Depreciate the least and give the owner confidence in reliability.

    • @titaniumquarrion9838
      @titaniumquarrion9838 Před 5 lety +1

      @@rockedits60 I don't disagree Hilux is a good truck but they are becoming more and more overpriced and into luxury car range. While 3rd overall including fleet sales the Triton is the most popular personal use truck, is extremely capable and more affordable.
      The reality is most buyers now simply don't do any research on other brands - They ignorantly follow trends as si the case for most consumers.
      Hilux depreciate the least becasue most people simply cannot afford a new one :-)
      As far as being "unbreakable" goes I have seen plenty break and in all honestly don't see them as any more rugged or reliable than a Triton until and unless someone can show me actual reliability stats...
      Do you have figures?

    • @rockedits60
      @rockedits60 Před 5 lety

      @@titaniumquarrion9838 nope you have me there to be honest. I've always just gone Hilux for work as i tow 1 tonne every day to and from work and I'm on my fourth and all I've had to do is service. Toyota's genuine parts out live any of my other friends utes parts eg brake pads, discs. I feel all car models are on the rise anyway. A base Hilux is around the 23k with a tray driveway. You'll find alot of people also would finance or use as a depreciation type tax figure for their choice of work meaning they don't care on the price.

If they want to hit the money they need to speak to people who actually 4wd and then build something that is actually rugged. Or sell a vehicle with no front bar or side steps or tow bar or any of the trimmings for 40k and let me spend 24k of my own cash to make it a descent 4wd.

      You should spend your own hard earned cash on one then go drive it on hundreds of kms of dirt and corrigated roads.Hook a 2 tonne trailer onto it,drive it onto heavy sand after you have sat there for 2 to 5 minuites waiting for L4 to engage then to have sensors fail and throw engine and traction control faults.
      Also I have rang the company who brings this car into the country and you know what,they couldn’t care less with customers problems with there unbreakable 4wd.

      Pablo Rages if you buy a new model 4wd hilux best to stay in town and never drive on dirt, load it up or tow anything off road.The car is rough as guts with them stupid 17 inch rims as well.
      Buy a landcruiser if you don’t need a auto transmission.

      R Diculous if I worked for the competitor why would I suggest by a landcruiser.
      Same company makes hilux and Landcruiser ,and no I don’t.
      Any way enjoy your hilux if you have one ,but don’t go out into remote places without a sat phone on your own.

    Do not understand 6 speed manual transmission in trucks. ...5 is enough as I see it.
    6 speed is for cars cruising along at higher speeds. ...imo.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  Před 6 lety +4

      Why though? 6 speeds can cruise at lower RPM, burn less diesel, and there’s sufficient torque with a turbo to accelerate decently in 6th at highway speeds

      @bosse641 Před 6 lety +2

      I never felt the trucks needed more than 5. ...I would never drive my trucks at high speeds. But trucks are becoming more and more car like every year. Sadly.

    Just another slug of a motor produced by Toyota. A VW 2.0ltr has more power than they're 2.8. Drove my mates and it felt like it was a car built from 10 yrs ago. And reliability haha poor guy 4 times back to the dealership from new but I guess this is what he wanted. My review is this is top dollar for peanuts and it is clearly 5 yrs behind in the way it drives to the other utes

    The new Hilux is piece of shit. Owned two so far, both have had countless dpf problems since new. Blowing white smoke and no completing dpf burn offs. Spent more time in the shop than driving it.
