I thought so too! The little chord progression when Kylie and Olly say “show me the way to your heart” is almost identical to the melody when the 80s song says “waiting for a star to fall” and I love it

Can I whinge? I’m not sure why you say chorus or harmoniser without specifying the effects (only because chorus implies added unison voices, harmoniser implies artificial harmonies being added), the effects most at play are simple reverb and delay, (and maybe doubling, but extremely subtle; the head voice bit doesn’t sound doubled to me)
I imagine the purpose was to beef up a solo live vocal simply because the original track is heavily layered. I love layered Kylie vocals - I think her voice is unique in that it gains this perfect pop sonic/phasing quality when she layers. All The Lovers and Spinning Around are great examples of that!
I also don’t think there any layers during the verses (there’s backing vocals, to emphasise some of the “oh-oh-aye” moments), but you’d largely hear silence if Kylie wasn’t singing.
It’s great to hear Kylie loud in the mix, she’s often too quiet. Maybe those mic effects were too loud; I don’t mind it simply because it highlights how live it is! 😊

I caught glimpses of backing singers but with the bright lights "sparkling" I couldn't tell how many. With all of the extras added on to the microphone it sounded more like a group of family members (because the voices would likely sound similar) rather than a duo. I enjoyed it, but agree there was a LOT of production. I wonder if that was a choice by Kylie and Ollie or if One Show was trying to avoid the many pitfalls they've run into in the past.

I was astonished how good they were singing live together, Kylie's vocals over the years are much improved & she is now very good live (far better than Madonna or Britney for example) Olly is ALWAYS great live but I think maybe nerves got the better of him at the very beginning!! Regardless,I would say this is a perfect combination,their voices blend PERFECTLY & unlike a lot of live performances it was easy on the ear and there was very little difference to the recorded version.I wish I knew how the microphone adds the 'layers' & "echo" that Georgina refers to....it's a mystery to most of us but I like it....it works for me (whatever it is!)
Don't talk about Britney. Kylie can only dream of having her distinctive voice...and career achievements.

I was thinking the same thing about Kylie's live vocals. It still doesn't stop people from shitting on her. What I find to be a double standard is that male singers don't get questioned whether or not they can sing like John Legend but female singers constantly get questioned whether or not they can sing like Celine, Mariah, Adele, Lady Gaga, etc (I love Lady Gaga though). No one is claiming that Kylie is Lady Gaga or Adele when it comes to singing but to factually say she can't sing is inaccurate. You don't need to have an Adele type voice to be talented.

I found this song a grower but I really like it now.
Also, for some reason the breakdown in the middle gives me Thriller vibes.
I love them. The song somehow reminds me of Cutting Crew’s Died in Your Arms, I don’t know, it must me those few notes on the chorus.
When it comes to production on the vocals I think we do need to take into account the environment they’re performing in.
They’re performing for TV in a courtyard outside with no acoustics at all. So I can understand why there is reverb on the mics and that’s definitely forgiving. All singer use reverb on the mics anyways. There just might be a little less in an actual theatre or live venue.
As for vocal layering or “filler vocal” we also have to remember that there are 6 backing vocalists there and it is possible that one of them could’ve been singing in unison with Kylie at the beginning of the track whilst off screen. (Unison vocals could and can be a part of a live musical arrangement)
But I loved this performance and that acapella clip that was posted online was gorgeous!

You are also right. Simplicity in song writing often makes it head to the top. After all, we wana dance and not think about things too deeply. Music is fun, free and liberating when it's simple. Look at her biggest release of cguoomh, so simple so big....

Thanks for the reaction! I was dreading the performance a bit as you said The One Show are not known for their brilliant sound when it comes to singers but I thought it was a good performance. Both started of a bit nervy I think but once they got into their stride it was really enjoyable. To be honest to an untrained ear I didn’t really notice the effects on the mic! 😂 Love the chemistry between them. If only the BBC didn’t insist on social distancing still as it would have been nice for them to be more interactive with each other but it is what it is!

Do you think the extra harmonies on the mic etc could have been to fill it out because it was an outdoor performance? I absolutely love them together too. They are great. Much more of them I hope to come. We've had two tracks now. Let's hope for an EP at least

As many effects/enhancements they might have on those mics they were both a bit flat on those verses, they were definitely singing live. Good blending and adlibs though.

Basically high pitched is head voice, deep voice is chest voice.
I truly hate processed vocals and autotune and it makes Kylie’s voice sound dreadful. I cannot listen to her Disco cd and this song either as too much voice processing is on it.
This live version is a tiny bit better as she sings on top of it a little.
Her Golden cd was much better and her voice was so much better on it.
The BBC has a £5.33 billion budget and the best technology yet cannot mix 2 vocals & a backing track 🙄

This was not a good performance - not the fault of Kylie or Olly - just terrible production and I found the whole staging weird - Kylie looking lost holding her belly, Olly appears in a puff of smoke followed randomly by backing singers. Just made no sense whatsoever. Odd thing is the backstage rehearsal was by far better to listen to - though Kylie has a habit of sounding better in rehearsal - more natural, less bothered about the camera
I agree with that. Tone isn't perfect all the time and too much effects on the mic and 6 chroristics for only 2 singers seems too much. All this stuff is not necessary...
