It is live, i was there doing security while they filmed it, she is a excellent singer, first thought the were playing a recording on set but when she stopped singing and talked in the mic in-between takes and doing practice singing, it is a job well done :)

1- Because it was the best song.
2- Because it was the only song of the 5 nominated to actually be in the film.
The Oscars are a joke honestly. Sometimes the voting comity doesn't even see all the movies they are voting on. I doubt they gave much attention to the movie. A shame really but not a surprise.
It lost to an affirmative action song which is simply racist by the academy. The winning song is horrible.

Being Swedish, she’d be used to singing in large outdoor venues in the cold. Live singing is what Swedes do well. It’s the norm.

She sang live (with post-work done to eliminate background noises) but the kids were pre-recorded & the music obvs isn’t live either. I know that she’s live because when she smiles I can hear her ”smile” in the vocals. When she’s singing the very last ”Husavik ved Skjalvanda”, she chokes up & there’re tears in her eyes. You can hear that in her voice! 😭 (shaking a lil bit) Btw, ALL Oscars performances were pre-recorded (with post-work in background noises) this year but there’s still no question that Molly sang that right then & there!!! 🤩

This is a better version compared to the movie. Her performance was a show stopper. I can feel the authenticity of the town and the lyrics describing the town is true to its nature.
This is actually my hometown, i was christened in that church you see in the background, my parent´s funeral was done there and i have siblings there, even a brother in law named Oskar ;)

Molly went to the Adolf Fredrik music school in Stockholm as a kid, a famous elementary school were many of Swedens most talanted artist started their road to fame. Molly is one of the best singers in Sweden right now.

It’s said a lot about many artists but Molly Sandén is GENUINELY so so so so under appreciated as an artist. She’s immensely talented, she has a fantastic vocal and she never disappoints live. Gutted she didn’t get the Oscar but stoked to see her at least get some more recognition of her immense Talent

The fact that we didn't send her Youniverse to the ESC rather than the extremely lackluster "Frans - If I were sorry" is such a crime. Not only because his song was boring as fuck, but Molly had all the elements of a song that would have fit right in. And the extremely obvious argument that she's one of the best singers in modern time that Sweden has produced.
You can see the northern lights in the background, I believe her dress is supposed to symbolise the northern lights. I love love love the performance.

One of the reasons Molly shares such an easy rapport with the kids is that she herself started singing publicly as a child. She and her sister each represented Sweden in various years of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
This is such a great song. She is very talented and deserved an Oscar. Unfortunately, we all know that sometimes "contests" are not very fair.
the Academy Awards arent an actual"competition" with supposedly level playing field. "Brokeback Mountain" failing to win Best Picture in 2005, losing to some piece of dreck showed the inherent homophobia in a supposedly liberal hollywood elite. One detail many people dont realize: only active, dues paying members of the Academy of MP arts/Sciences are allowed to vote, and many of them dont bother knowing what a sham the whole thing is now.
The Oscars are not that big of a deal anymore....believe me I live in America.

This song is too good for the Oscars. It makes me cry everytime I hear it cuz there's so much emotion in the singer's voice and the lyrics are beautiful. It makes me fall in love with Husavik even though I've never been there. If a song that's able to do that to people doesn't deserve an award, I don't know what else does.
As an Icelander I'm glad to see that they worked hard on Icelandic. In the movie most off the time you had no clue what they where trying to say now you can hear it, but there is a bit off a flaw in how they put the words together but I wont drag the performance and the effort they have put into this new version off the song down for it, the song is well done over all!

You can use a floor mic, and hovering pic ups for the choir, it's obviously LIVE, gosh.
Has amazing breath control. It was already a very long sustain, and then she suddenly as a riff at the end.

Just an an amateur sound guy here but all of the compression and reverb you're hearing is easy to dial in live, definitely doesn't have to be done in post. A proper sound check and she'd be sorted out. Also, sure, with a normal shure mic or something, she'd have some wind noise and things, but she does have the wind sock on it, and this is the oscars. Kari Job uses a 1500 dollar mic for reasons just like these. It's not a standard setup most of us would use normally.
I wouldn't comment at all really, but when I first saw Husavik, I absolutely devoured everything I could find of hers that was live. She is an incredible talent, and I have 0 doubts she performed this live. It makes me cry literally every single time I watch it. Her voice is absolutely incredible.

And as far as I can tell from them, the children were pre-recorded (altough they sing at the docks anyway.....obviously), and Molly sings live there.
Of course the recording was done a week or so before the Oscars , (Molly was back in Stockholm at the actual Oscars),
So I think you are right about post-editing ( background noice).
But as far as it goes....-a really nice show!!

When I was in Iceland I bought a jumper like that. Very Icelandic made of the Icelandic wool. Everybody in Iceland has jumpers like that. They are so warm! I can only wear it here in Belgium in very very cold days!

I watched this performance a few times for the first time today and I cried each time. It's such a beautiful song, and the setting and the children singing, AND the freaking northern lights in the background, and then even the fireworks in the end, everything just makes it so memorable and emotional, it's perfect. I love it. When the children join her singing in Icelandic at 4:45 I can't keep a couple of tears from falling down, I don't even know why. Wow. And I haven't even watched the film yet. Love love love it!

I say this was recorded earlier in the evening because if she was going to sing it at the time it would be at like 1 or 2 am in the morning. Still she done an incredible job
It was pre-recorded probably to erase background noises and such and to make sure no technical failures during the Oscars since she was in Iceland, but Molly is singing live. She always does, have heard her live and she sounds exactly like this - amazing voice!
"and the magic nights sur*PASS* all others" - there is 100% a mix on the 'pass' part of 'Surpass'. It sounds like the the vocal from the recording. Just on the second part of that word.
This song was robbed of an award.
It's also been pointed out to me by an Icelandic friend that the pronunciation of Icelandic in the song has been corrected b/c it's wrong in the film 😂
When singing live..it is hard to reproduce the movie version...however...there is no post production for a live performance

Interesting side thing: a friend told me they had heaters all over the dock, but kind of hidden so the stage may have been a bit warmer. Some of the mist may have been from there. The other thing: that orchestral group--I play violin. Outdoors and in odd temperature, the strings on the actual instruments were likely slicing their fingertips up as they played. Each time we saw them up close, they were not hesitating, though. That's some tough violinists and cellists right there. Determined.
