  • Nestled against the backdrop of one of the world’s most notorious conflict zones are the pristine snow-capped peaks of Gulmarg.
Despite being a few kilometres from the Line of Control dividing India and Pakistan, it has long attracted adventure-seeking skiers from the West.
Now it has become a winter escape for Kashmiris too, a respite from the tension they live with every day.
101 East visits Indian-administered Kashmir and meets the Kashmiris conquering the slopes of their homeland through a burgeoning ski industry.

I went to learn Skiing in Gulmarg this year and it was a breathtaking experience. The locals are supportive and understand the kind of economic growth skiing and snowboarding can bring to the area. The tourism department on the other hand needs to improve the local infrastructure and support the locals in order for the area to be able to maximize its potential. Hopefully, with prolonged stability in the region and with extensive government support, Gulmarg can very well become one of the best ski towns in the world.

On the surface they certainly seemed to be alright with the government if they could achieve economic prosperity. The economy of the entire area is completely dependent on tourism and hence they wanted the government to help them with the same. The government is doing a little here and there, but because of stability issues, environmental factors and a few others, there hasn't been any big investment for a long time in that area.

Please translate more accurately. When the man says 'InshaAllah', this means 'God Willing'. When the young lady says 'assalamu'alaikum', this means 'peace be upon you' and is a common greeting amongst the Kashmiris. If you leave these out from the translation, you are stripping the individuals from their religious identity. This is essential to telling the story of the Kashmiri people. It is essential for our narrative which is constantly being attacked and remains threatened by external forces (Indian occupation and Hindutva extremists who desire to change Kashmir's Muslim majority demographic).

@@babubabe8294 We are not part of India and we will continue to resist any attempt to make it so. We have our own values and culture separate to that of India. India has forcibly imposed its occupation and control of Kashmir, but this is against what the Kashmiri people desire. India is carrying out the war crimes including killing of over 96,000 Kashmiris since the 90s. To this day, Indian occupation forces are carrying out extrajudicial killings, kidnappings and rape of innocent Kashmiris who protest the occupation. Even before India was founded, Kashmir has always been an autonomous self-governing state. We want freedom and independence to be our own country. We will have good relations with India if they end the occupation and leave Kashmir. We want peace, but there is no peace without justice. Free Kashmir is our slogan, till Kashmir is free. Please understand this. 🌹
