Ford has some big hero nameplates in its back catalogue - Escort, Explorer, Mustang, Capri. And as you will know it’s bringing some of those names back on cars as heroic as the originals. The Explorer, good car - but it’s not an Explorer. The Mustang - again good, but it’s not a Mustang. And now, I’ve had a first look at the electric Capri. Which, yes… you’ve guessed it, is not a Capri.
The new Capri is basically a Ford Explorer, and that car is basically a Volkswagen. Well, sort of… Beneath the surface of both the Explorer and the new Capri lies Volkswagen’s MEB platform and powertrains, which you may be familiar with from the ID.3, 4, 5, Skoda Enyaq and the rest. Ford agreed a tie-up with Volkswagen a few years back, so that VW now uses Ford bits for its commercial vehicles, and Ford uses VW bits for its electric passenger cars, in an effort to cut development and manufacturing costs. And that’s why we have a Capri that isn’t a Capri.
The Ford Capri will be offered with rear-wheel drive, single motor models or a four-wheel drive, dual-motor version. The single motor Capri will be available with a 52kWh usable battery capacity as of 2025, but it’s the 77kWh car that will arrive first - complete with a range of up to 389 miles. It can also manage 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds thanks to the 282bhp electric motor, which is fast even by the standards of its rivals.
The dual motor Ford Capri gets slightly different battery chemistry and a usable capacity of 79kWh, which is good for 367 miles of WLTP range. Not bad given the 335bhp and 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds.
As for charging speeds, the 79kWh Capri Extended Range AWD does that faster, too! It gets a peak DC charging rate of 185kW, so you’ll get a 10-80% charge in 26 minutes.
The single motor Ford Capri Extended Range RWD charges at up to 135kW, which is still good for the same top-up in under 30 minutes. A 7kW home charger will top the Explorer up in around 13 hours.
Join Ginny as she takes a close look around the new Ford Capri for the first time. Should Ford have chosen a different name for its newcomer? Does it matter to you? Let us know in the comments below.

This is a crime against the legacy of the Capri.
yes thats a capri, bc its just a fckn car
You are too old then mmmm
No, it is not. 90% of current car consumers don't even know what Capri was. And then it's just a name. Nothing else.
Yes, they will not sell many of those.
@@gaz6739 I think Honda's best car is the E:NY1. Worst in every class.

I hope its less than 3.5 tons.
Don't forget about the Citroen Ami rivalling 1 seat Granada.
😂😂9 seater fiesta😂😂
Looks like a Polestar
An overweight one yes.
Or a Chinese copy of a Volvo/ polestar. Who would buy this or the explorer or an ID4/5. Over the competition
IT DOES!!! I thought that as soon as I saw it. I think it’s the door handles and the chunky bottom half. I like it tho!
Yeah, from Wish
It absolutely does! 😢
This video made me laugh. Not just at the monstrosity of the car and the total misappropriation of the Capri name, more the way Ginny has to tie herself up in knots trying not to be too disparaging of the car as otherwise they won’t be invited back.
I’ll help her - this is a complete mess of a car, trading on a hallowed name and if this is what Ford can offer, they are in deep trouble.
Absolutely.
But, surely, you must know, despite everything, it will sell. And these days, that's all that matters.
Ford going down the cupra road, completely devalue the name to the point it's a laughing stock
I usually like quirky cars, but what the hell is that monstrosity?
Probably has a 40000.00 price tag to . Once you buy these EVs and you keep it for 3 years they don't want to give you much for trade in because not many people want to buy an electric vehicle that has a 3 year old battery. Don't waste your money , These car companies are pricing their selves right out of buisness. Maybe it's because of the high Union wages and the UAW care more about money than they do about quality.

Thanks for saying its crap without actually saying it's crap.
Are Ford looking to go out of business, they seriously need to look at their pricing or offer massive discounts. Their cars are not premium enough to achieve the prices they’re asking.
They are in full on failing business mode, focusing on what is currently making them money (commercial) and neglecting the rest until the unprofitable side picks up again, udeally with minimal to no effort which usually ends well....not.
Ford is not and never was a 'premium' brand. They can not sell for premuim prices.
@@whoneedsfactsthey will probably just make as GM and just leave Europe passenger car business keeping just commercial vehicles... pity but they just don't have any good cars... no hatch... no good EVs at competitive prices either
'Is' Ford...
It's the Ford polestar 2!!!
The Polestar is actually attractive 😂
It's a reskinned ID.4 made by VW for Ford. i.e. Ford put the absolute minimal effort into getting this car to market.
VW doesn't make the Polestar EV lineup. Polestar is made in China.
Polestar is made in China by a Chinese manufacturer.
@@outkast40 So what? Many electrical items has chinese dna in it.
The Capri - sat low with a long bonnet you couldn’t see over, vinyl seats that looked great but you sweat on in the warm weather, and a rear end that swung out on the slowest corner…….great memories lol.
I had a Mk3 2.0 Laser and absolutely loved it.. As you said, long bonnet with the power bulge, had a cloth interior so not so much sweating and even with lower powered models, be careful in the wet because lack of weight over rear end.. Great memories here as well, wish I'd never sold it!!
I remember that terminal understeer, so great you had to anticipate curves on motorways.
Yep...but nonetheless desireable....which this chinese'esk iteration isnt.
I drove one once. Took of from the lights the seat flew back so I couldn't reach the pedals and then the gear stick came off in my hands.... Good times!
And the 2.0L high performance was Capri Piranah.
As an owner of a new MK1 series 2, 3.0ghia this one is a crime scene
You brute, you made me laugh out loud. 👍😂

Not a Capri.
Not if I drink a bottle of rum, six beers and a Bailey's , put on my reading glasses by mistake and squint really, really hard...will it ever look remotely like a Capri.

Okay so you’re not a fan? lol

Didn’t Ford own Volvo in the past? Looks like they sneakily kept the drawings for the Polestar 😂
Volvo was actually bought by Ford in 1999 until they sold it in 2010....
Polestar didn't existed when Ford owned Volvo, i mean it did exist as a racing team but they didn't produced cars :)
They were in the janitor closet. Lol
Woah , WTF has Ford done, that has been hit hard with the ugly stick! Thanks for saying so, without saying it out loud!
I'd prefer that they said it out loud! This is a review right?
@@bowtoy All car reviews are ‘lenient’. They don’t want to be shunned by the manufacturers, do they?🙂
Capri was a piece of junk back in 1969. Another Union made on a Friday car . I seen more Fords on the side of the road now days and I have had two that were always having problems and will never buy another one.
@@jessyhavron2548 Back in the 60s/70s they were easy to maintain/repair. Not so, these days. OK, I smashed the diff in my Cortina and the gear cluster in my Escort - but that was simply too much power in a hurry and the standard gearbox. No problems with the 3.78 diff and 2000E gearbox. 1500 GT+ engines were good. The Essex engine in the Capri and Granada gave no problems. Nowadays, a lot of so-called drivers wouldn’t know how to ‘oil the dipstick’, let alone top-up/change the engine diff and gearbox oils.
The truth is they’ve been caught with their pants down on the whole EV thing. Probably the only way they can catch up now is by sourcing bits off other manufacturers
ANOTHER SUV CROSSOVER 🤡💀
Better than Toyota. Worse than Skoda. Nowhere near a Model Y.
Hmm
@wolfgangpreier9160 , Nah!- another boring massive SUV, where have all the Ford design team been hiding when all they can come up with is this. All the RS cars and hatchbacks that Ford were world leaders at designing, worse of all they have called it a Capri.
@@rogerbarrett9920 If i am Geely i would sue Ford for a product look alike. This thing looks like a blown up Polestar 2.
With less power, more space, more range, more weight, worse Software.
@@wolfgangpreier9160You seen the updated Polestar? It looks naff, Capri is so much better.
Well said Ginny, it looks nothing like a Capri. Ford should just have called it the Explorer coupe… They appear to have no idea what value they have in their historic nameplates. A two door affordable BEV coupe with RWD would have been so cool. What they have produced is just some car
So why do we need this when VW and Skoda already make it ?
Maybe its cheaper? Lets hope so.
@@stevenjones916
Good point and their offerings are better looking too.
To help Ford's WLTP CO2/km fleet average, without the costs of Ford designing their own car. It's similar to how the VW Amorak is a rebadged Ford Ranger (in that case about having a full model range, as obviously Amaroks and Rangers have very poor CO2/km). 🙂
Well this has a range up to 630km
We don’t but Ford wants every piece of the market cake I guess
Prime example of making a product just to occupy a market sector. Absolutely no reason to get a rebadged VW.
Seeing they’ve basically reskinned the Explorer (which is in turn a reskin of an ID4), why didn’t they just call it Dora?
Indeed 😀
Its like a Russian doll of cars 😂
People might actually like it if they called it the Dora😅
Can’t see why they haven’t called it a Granada, Consul etc, it’s a disgrace against the Capri name, Ford marketing haven’t understood its legacy.
"Ford marketing haven’t understood its legacy."
The old Ford's tradition "let's thow away our great design of the past, and just steal the grill from aston".
Actually, the Granada would have been the perfect name for this. It is after all a modern interpretation of the ethos of that car.
It's not a Capri. And using that name is a travesty
I am not overly concerned by them using the Capri name as it's theirs to use as they wish but yes Granada, maybe even Cortina, would have made more sense
@@vitalyromas6752 they didnt steal anything, just a design resemblance. get a grip
That's probably because most of the Ford marketing/design team were not alive when the original hit the road so have no concept of what they have done.
From now on it will be known as the Ford Crapi
There is no way this Fisher Price car is a Capri.
Does have a slight resemblance to the original but looks more like a higher Polestar 2.
What bit reminds you of the capri, the ford badge 😂did they even make a capri in yellow,I know the cortina was,at least on the l reg plate
Why on earth would anyone buy one of these Fords over literally any of its competition?!
If this is cheaper and use less power….
Price.
@@jasonbernard1277 because they can be better in some ways
@@wolfgangpreier9160
It's over double the price I would be willing to pay regardless of the fake branding.
Ford Galaxy would be a better suit than Ford Capri. While all new cars seem to look the same, resembling a huge dog with a different collar, parking spaces are not getting any bigger.
Wtf first they did this to the mustang now the capri ?!!! 😢 There mental
I’m waiting for Ford to come out with a Transit sized SUV, AWD with 22” rims called the Cortina. Closely followed by the same car, in wannabe rally spec. in comfortable shoes with go-faster-stripes and calling itself an Escort.
Then those with taste and a personal sense of automotive justice. Can just ignore Ford, by buying an Ora Cat. Not the best car in the world but at least it’s got individuality on its side.
@@dcvariousvids8082 🤣🤣 thats the problem with design teams these days draw a box with wheels make it electric then ship it out. I remember seeing a concept of a capri and it looked class. Fords smoking crack.
So it doesn't look like a Capri, isnt made like a Capri, is a foot higher than a Capri, im guessing it weighs a tonne heavier than a Capri, and is a milk float.
Second hand cars are the future.
FINALLY someone says it like it is.
I felt this ways since the “Mustang” Mach-E. Completely ridiculous and a blasphemy to make these iconic Cars into some cheap SUV knockoffs.
I do not have a problem with them being EV, Is the blatant pathetic marketing they are trying to pull. All to sell them by naming them something they are not.
Someone else, yes, thank you. I actually find the idea of an electric Mustang potentially interesting: something quite affordable but will destroy in drag races. But putting that badge on an ugly "soccer mommmm" SUV is blasphemy. And this with the Capri is just as bad.
Biggest problem is if you own one and you tell someone "I've got a Ford Capri" and they say "oh really is it's a Mk1 or Mk2" or whatever then you have to "No it's the new electric SUV one" other person is like Oh
Should be called “Looks like a polestar 2 that’s eaten to many doughnuts”
A Capri which is now bigger than an Explorer, you really have to get your head arround this. They should better start using new names for their cars, but maybe that is also cost reduction to reuse old fashioned names which have nothing to do with the actual models.
I am only two minutes in and was sure someone else had commented 'Polestar'. So I'm here to also say 'Polestar'! There!
From side the rear looks very polestar but the rest is anonymous blob
They could have at least put the front lights and “grille” into one block it just looks off
The side profile looks like a Polestar 2. This really isn’t a Capri 😢
Isn't it a yellow Polestar 2? At least from the side...
Wow, it has a secret cubby hole and a tilting screen, I'm sold!! Take my imaginary 42k, Ford are in denial. And I'm not promising myself one....ever.
"Alexa, show me custard that hates itself sooooo much when it sees itself in the mirror that it vomits..."
In profile it looks more like a Polestar 2 than a Capri.
Ford's designers wanted to say that the car looks like a Capri from the distance....what from the moon!?
Ooh… the Polestar 2 comes in yellow and a bit more boring now? Cool.
I'm struggling to understand where the Capri fits in the lineup against the MachE.
I am wondering that too. Concluded that the MachE is dead now they have bought into the VW platform. It is nearly exactly the same very strange.
Has Ford just made a competitor to the Mustang Mach-e? Looks like they're aiming for the same market segment.
They are damn fools,
British Leyland did similar in the 60's and 70's. That ended well.
Looks more like a Polestar 2. I had a 2.8 Capri and it was wonderful.
It certainly doesn't look like a Capri in profile. It's a bit bland, which is very un-Capri.
I don’t see Bodie and Doyle jumping over the bonnet in this one😢
They could but would need a ladder!
They might if the charging cable is on the other side 😂
In the wake remake, it will be a fat t-wimyn Bodies and fat lez Doyle cruising leisurely at 30 mph in this Crapi
Oh no a Ford Polestar 2 on VW running gear and doubtless with the VW software too. Sorry Ford but a Capri is an aspirational 2 door hatchback coupe with a long bonnet, that thing has none of those. Just get an old Capri and re-engineer it with a Tesla battery and motors at one of the restomod companies who re-engineer old Land Rovers, Porsche’s, Ferrari’s etc
That thing is a Ford Explorer GT….
That’s a Polestar, surely…
That's a frikkin polestar 2 - surely they can't get away with that !?
Ginny looks so tiny up against that car! Well done for speaking up for us true Capri lovers.
It’s a polestar with an allergy! 🤧
The thing that makes it all the more sad is the old Capri was probably more aerodynamic than that thing and therefore far more suitable to be an EV!
Ginny, I love how fired up and honest you are about this. Well done! First time I've seen you this exasperated as you should be, too many look alike SUVs and your right to call out the manufacturers.
You have a great platform and you should use it.
I've been a ford fan for most my life but they need a shake for what they have been making recently. Let designers...well, design cars, Not a focus group.
Look at the Renault 5, so many people absolutely love what Renault are doing, ford juts needed to do what it does best which is make great handling, great looking hatchbacks.
Untill they do, I'll spend my time with the Renault 5
Bodie and Doyle would get hernias trying to roll over that bonnet 😂
That’s a Polestar!
Looks like a blown up Polestar. One tire is already larger and heavier than a whole Capri
Are they running out of car names ? The original Capri was an icon, not this, which looks almost identical to any number of modern cars.
The polestar looks more like a Capri than this from the distance
How long before we have a Ford Prefect😅

Yup, is does look like a Capri from the distance. I’m in the UK, is that far enough away 😂
So similar to the polestar 2
It's an SUV, more closely related to a Transit van than an old Capri.
Why are new cars so bloody big (not just EV’s), have these people seen the size of the roads and gaps they have to get through / fit into.
Everything needs to be as big as possible in America. Go to other countries and you hardly see CUVs and SUVs. It's mostly compact cars.
They are good for housing fat people with knackered knees (because they are fat)
@@shaybappleI assume you aren't familiar with UK cars?

Its like a podgy 'who ate all the pies' Polestar 2. Just naff.
That looks as much like a Capri as I look like Alexandra Daddario.
It looks like a a fat Polestar. EV skateboards allow such an opportunity for designers to make beautiful cars and this isn't one of them. I have grown up with an affection for the Ford brand name. Whilst I appreciate that the Capri of old, can't be the Capri of today, this design language is not something I could ever see on my driveway.
I never been good at spelling!! Is CRAPI correct??
Loved the original, had a Mk3 myself.
This is just the same old crap everyone else is churning out!!!
Plenty of room for tins of soup. @ £42k that's all you'll be eating 😂
Ford basically dont want to lose the copywrite/trademark for their old car names. It began with Puma. I reckon thr ID.7 based Mondeo will be next.
Mondo would have been a better name for it
Well nobody else will want to use those names from now on !
No no no wtf are ford thinking
This is so damn sad. Ford Europe is actively trying to obliterate its own history. First the Puma, then the Mustang, then they killed off the Fiesta and Focus - at which point I started mourning - and now the Capri. Just so they can all be re-mouldings of the same car. WHY!?
More than 10yrs ago, Ford had already announced to the automotive world that they would only be building Trucks and Suvs moving forward.
The reason was that their data showed that consumers were moving away from sedans, hatchbacks, coupes and going all in on SUVs and their car division was kinda losing money as compared to their truck division which was doing fine.
It is already surprising they kept the Focus and Fiesta for as long as they did after they killed the Mondeo, Puma and KA.
So production cost cutting doesn't translate into affordable prices, just increased profit margins.
Note, perhaps that why Tesla doing so well. Basically selling two models.
they said it looks like a Capri from a distance. they didnt mention
the distance was as viewed from the moon.
Damn Ford is murdering their legends. Mustang and Capri .. damn..:-( That Capri is fugly!
No Frunk!? The front and bonnet is huge! What is under there?
Looks like a swollen Polestar copy.
Over £40k. It's a nope from me...
For gods sake not Another SUV 😩😤
This could've been an Explorer Sport or something, why use the Capri name for this
I can see the Capri miles away in fight conditions and 35 km away🇳🇴 hard being car journalist in 2024 but You guys and girls does still a great job🎉
It looks like a slightly rounder Polestar 2.
the haptic buttons are 1 of the best things about VW cars. I really don't understand why people don't like them
I’m old enough to remember fantasising about owning a Capri when I “grew up”. Well now I’m all grown up…….I’ll give this a wide berth. It is FUGLY!
Ford really need to up their game in the electric space. This doesn't feel like the car to do that.
Even the Capri Sun juices are more Capri than this
A bit like producing a tin of red paint, discontinuing it, then over 40 years later re introducing it, but its...... YELLOW !!
Absolutely horrendous, what we are witnessing here is the end of Ford , and that’s from someone who has owned multiple capris, so if this is fords future you can keep it
A Ford copy of a Polestar 2 but with the VW interface rather than the Polestar’s excellent Google interface and horrible haptic controls that Polestar thank goodness does not have.
How secret a locker is a secret locker when every car reviewer mentions it?
My dad's favourite car was his 3-litre Capri, and says this "breaks his heart" - I agree with your point that Ford are attempting an immediate nostalgia link to sell on IP alone, but really, that's having the opposite effect.
Even if they called it the Capri XL, we could think "ah, this is a different beast entirely, they attempted to redesign it in SUV form." But as it stands, comparisons are inevitable, and this is as much a Ford Capri as it is a Porsche 911.
The comparisons will overshadow the potential popularity of the car... which is really quite ironic considering why they called it "Capri" in the first place.
Baffling.
I see more a polestar 2 than capri
Fully agree, Ginny. Why is Ford doing this to its legacy? I am retired and would love to buy a proper phev or ev Capri, and I bet a lot of 20/30 somethings would too. Another opportunity lost. 😢
20/30 somethings don't buy EVs full stop.
Second hand proper looking cars is what they buy. And rightly so.
True it should have been called a Granada or Consul or something like that!
or Cortina, Sierra, even Mondeo.....
Poor mans Polestar 2
An overweight Polestar 2? I'll pass and keep my real Polestar 2.
If anything it looks like a polestar
So... from the side they made a Polestar 2 SUV! As with the Explorer my reaction is... Meh.
That rear quarter light and top of back quarter panel are the only OG Capri bit that i can see 🤷🏼♂️
Why does Ford keep using names with reputations on new vehicles that do not live up to the reputation of those classic names???
can we sue companies for using these name in this manner?
What is the point of this car? If the Explorer already exists, as well as the ID5, the Tesla Y, the ioniq 5, the ev6.. I could go on and on. The MG4 has sold by the bucket load because people are crying out for small decent BEVs. Also the CEO of Ford recently said people need to fall back in love with small cars... So here's another big car.
