I’ve tried the evolve 50, Bose, pro 16 and the
    RCF J8
Returned everything or sold them and went to my Bose pro L 32 with a sub to truly amazing! I’ve been opposed user for over nine years and now I’ve upgraded to the new pro 32. Best decision! The worst speaker for me was the evolve 50!
RCF was OK. Just more involved with step and takedown.

Awesome Rick! I have a lot of the same speakers. I also use the 44G2’s for 80/90% of my gigs, I have the Evox 8 for smaller and DB Tech IG4T (very similar to Rcf NXL24)over Icoa 18’s. The Icoa 18 subs sound awesome, but then run out of gas and like you said the tops keep going.

The crazy part is i have seen the evolve 50, Maui 24, Bose 16 and JBL in action. Not much of a difference except the power output. The evolves sound just as good as any of the other speakers of you use them in the right application which is under 150 people.

Basically 50’s through the 80’s type shows with Dance music mixed in depending on the audience just got 2 of the 28 G3’s. They are fantastic for vocals because the mids just cut through so clean. The Bose subs are suppose to be the equivalent to a 15" sub, so it should be next to the Maui 44. If you give the RCF two ICOA subs stacked you'd have enough to hang with them. Other than that, great video. I always enjoy your videos and reviews. Keep up the awesome work!

  • @markbfresh
    @markbfresh Před 4 měsíci +1

Great shootout! Interestingly, I have the far left & right speakers. I use the Maui 5 Go for ceremony and cocktail (probably based on a review by you). I recently got a pair of the RCF NXL 24-A-MK2. Before I owned them, I would see DJs using them with only a short pole from the sub and wondered why they had them so low. Now I understand. The vertical dispersion is only 30 degrees and the high end driver is way at the top. This is by design so that they can throw sound for long distances especially when used outdoors. However, when using them indoors near the dance floor, they need to be lower, otherwise the highs will go over people's heads on the dance floor. I think they would have sounded even better at this close distance if they were lower. I bought some short poles from Amazon as my regular sub poles were too long.

It had a great tweeter that could carry sound but that was about it. But I love the eon one mk2. My main setups are the maui 44g2 but the jbl is fun to run cordless and holds its own with 2 of them.

Original wood cabinet Evox 8's I feel hand with the Maui 28s. Also you are missing Turbosound Inspire models. DB Technologies ES1203 (In the category of the Maui 44's and Evoke 12s). Also HK audio makes some good line arrays. AND the true king of column arrays the K-Array systems for $20-$30k The one with the 21" subs hits 143DB, we were asked to no longer use it on the DJExpo Show Floor when I worked a booth there. Hi Rick, First let me thank you for all that you have done and what you continue to do for mobile DJ's. I am super old school (started in 1979) You have definitely taught me some things to help me into the Twenty First century ! Regarding this video, I may get a lot of hate over this, but I spent a month shopping for a pair of column array speakers to supplement my EV ELX-15P speakers. I watched a lot of videos asked for advice on FB and took in a lot of data. I just want to ask why you didn't mention the Harbinger MLS-1000's. They are at least half the price of any of the speakers you tested. It came down to budget for me so I got them 3 months ago. I have used them at a number of gigs and they are amazing and a customer even commented on how good the sound was. I just wanted your opinion in case I am missing something here. Thanks!

Definitely prefer the build quality of the LD over the Bose. However, the Bose have a better dispersion than my LDs. The dispersion mitigates mic feedback which can be mistaken for clarity. I'd love to see a battery-powered roundup as mentioned at the end of the video. The Soundboks Gen 3 has really impressed me for the price, with the only real letdown being that you can only run it off wall power at a maximum of 50% volume (above that and it cuts out because the wall adapter is only meant to charge the battery, not power the speaker).

especially through the mic, the RCF system sounded much warmer and more liquid from the midbass up and less boxy sounding than the LD arrays which probably project much harder in the mids and highs. the RCFs might sound brighter lowered to put the tweeter closer to on axis with the mic, but the warmer treble almost sounds silkier as/is. I'd get pair or two of 4x12 sealed subs instead of an 18" and RCFs based on what I'm hearing through the mic through those... very easy on the ears sound and less shouty than the smaller arrays. It would have been nice to hear JBL, Yamaha and others, but liking the nice laid back new to me RCFs

I "had" the Bose pro 16's and sold them after 4-5 parties. A ton of bass but the column could not keep up. Also the column connection weakness was bad. I Currently have both the 28 G3's Love them for under 100 guests in a smaller room. Big room and its not enough. My winner which I also own is the 44g2. All around great set up. My only gripe is no top handle on the sub. Makes it hard to load and unload when running a solo gig. I actually sold my QSC 181's and k12's and replaced with the 44 g2's.

@@ericarbour1283 Yeah for sure. Ok #1 is I dont feel they will hold up over the years of djing. Im very concerned with the way the column attaches to the sub. All it takes is one drunk person to grab it and pull for it to instantly break. That is my main concern. #2 There VERY boomy. The sub is actually fantastic where as the column in my opinion is too dispersed. Not enough overall volume going forward to the dance floor.. Those are my 2 main gripes. To follow up the rooms I were in had 2nd story ceilings. In jersey a lot of our venues are built with high ceilings. My experience even if I only had 50 people on the floor is the sound got lost. Just not enough sound moving forward from the speaker. Once again the bass was powerful just not the top. In the end im not going to lie, its a great speaker for specific parties. I just wanted a great speaker for all my parties if im spending that much. Conclusion. The Bose L1 "in my opinion" is perfect for a low ceiling room and can handle a descent up to 125 person gig. If you have the money to buy a pair of the Bose I instead would buy a used set of Evox 12's for the same cost.

I’ve been using the Bose L1 model II since it was launched. it’s been great, worked like a horse, never had an issue. Although now I need more volume and punch. Both me and the venues demand it. I’m a performer (singer&looper) at different kind of events. I do need loud volume and firm bass but in a portable design. For example, I just did 6shows in 5 days. I need a quick in and out of venues. Tried the Pro32 sub1, it was good but I’m not sure it’s the best for me. Love the 180 spread and portable design, don’t like the build and the price. I don't know why but in the UK and from my experience the most common speakers I see DJs using, are the RCF Evox J8 or the J12 or the original Evox 12 . My only guess to why, is that wedding venues in the UK are noticeably smaller. I would confidently say, that 85 to 90% of UK Wedding DJs use one of the variants I have mentioned.

That comes down to what speakers are easiest to come across. The shipping cost to the us for rcf stuff makes them significantly more expensive than other option which is why its less common

Wait which one was battery only? I own the LD Maui 5 GO a white pair, use them for ceremony, cocktail hour and small events, never over guest of 100 or more because Duh they're only 8 inch subs. I think that's a huge factor, battery, clearest in my opinion of them all, and option of battery and come in white-cant beat that! Im a hug fan of LD and RCF, used them both on gigs I did last year for another DJ company and do have to say the RCFs and LD 44 are beast-but as mentioned it all comes to application. Overall, great video and very informative. Thank you,

Most column systems need a low cabinet that will go up a bit higher than a typical sub. I've been pairing 16-driver tops (3" or 4") with dual-12" or dual-15" low cabinets that reach up to 200Hz, which takes some of the low pressure off the column. Takes some management around 250Hz but gets a lot of compliments for size and punch.

Bose has its own sound. If you are used to loudspeakers with horns it is certain that you will find that it lacks high but it is much less offensive.. once you get used to it you will not go back to horns.
but hey.. it is light but fragile..
For DJ, I am flat, no EQ, use an XRL TO TRS cable in channel 3 is the best solution if you use an external mixer or DJ console. IF you are a singer, install the Bose application and do some testing with the Tonematch

Mainly MCing at events and functions outdoors for groups between 100-300 people. We want to spend under ~$2500. I was wondering if you would recommend buying 3x maui 5's to link together for the larger events that way we have the ability to place them around the event for more coverage over 1 LD Systems Maui 44. Intro (00:00:00)
Comparing column array systems: LDS, Bose, and RCF.
Categories and scoring system will be explained.
Time-lapse of setting up the speakers.
    Speaker Comparison (00:00:55)
    Lineup of speakers:
LD Systems Maui 5 Go (battery-powered column array)
    Bose L1 Pro 16
    LD Systems Maui 28 G3S
    LD Systems Maui 44 G2S
RCF NLX 24S paired with LD Systems ICOA 18S (absurdity)
    Missing speakers:
EV Evolve 50S (personally hated, destroyed by Bose and Maui 28S)
RCF EVOX 12S (comparable to Maui 44 G2S, but Maui 44 G2S considered better)
RCF EVOX 8S (Maui 28 G3S considered better)
LD Systems has the best two column arrays on the market.
Audio Technica microphone used for recording.
Warehouse garage door will be opened to reduce echo.
    Accessories (00:03:15)
    LD Maui 5 Go:
    Bag for columns and subwoofer.
    Well-padded.
    Bose L1 Pro16:
    Long bag with smaller compartment.
    Decent padding.
Space for cables inside the bag.
    RCF 44s and G3s/28s:
Separate bags for arrays and bottoms.
    Good padding for arrays.
Caster plate on 44s clamps on, while on 28s it just sits on the plate.
    RCF NXL 24s:
    Full-length speaker cover.
    Padded cover for the sub.
Casters are bolted onto the back of the sub.
The speaker set-up process will be shown next.
    Speakers (00:05:04)
The Maui 5 Go has an 8-inch subwoofer, is battery-powered, and has three sections: a battery, a spacer, and a section for high and mid-range speakers.
The Bose L1 Pro 16 has a 10-inch x 18-inch subwoofer, a speaker array, and an optional plastic spacer.
The Maui 28 G3 has a 12-inch subwoofer and speakers throughout two sections.
The LD Systems Maui 44 G2 has a 15-inch subwoofer, speakers throughout the array, and dedicated high drivers in the top.
The RCF nlx 24s has large woofers, high ranges, and an 18-inch LD IOA subwoofer.
Each speaker will be dialed in to exactly 100 dB at 15 feet.
Three different tracks will be played: a hip-hop track, an EDM house track, and a track with a lot of vocals.
After comparing the speakers on the three tracks, they will be put back up to their maximum volume and a variety of different music will be played to get a full comparison.
    Pink Noise (00:08:21)
Maui 5 reached 100.7 dB at the limit.
    Bose L1 Pro 16 reached 111 dB.
    Maui 28 reached 111 dB.
    Maui 44 reached 114.6 dB.
Nlx 24 reached 116 dB when raised higher.
Every 3 dB increase is significant to the human ear.
    House EDM (00:10:50)
All speakers were set to 100 dB for a fair comparison.
No EQ was applied to any of the speakers.
A house EDM track with a drop was played.
A hip-hop song with vocals was played.
The Maui 28 had more bass.
The RCF and LD sub had a deeper and richer bass.
    In Reverse (00:13:47)
The reviewer compares the clarity of the LD Systems and RCF speakers.
The LD Systems sub with the RCF has an 18-inch speaker, which provides a deeper bass compared to the 44 G2s.
The reviewer plays a different song to compare the speakers in reverse order.
All the volumes are the same for a fair comparison.
The reviewer provides a brief commentary on the speakers' performance.
    Price (00:18:40)
    LD Maui 5 Go: $1,000
    Bose L1 Pro 16: $1,199 (without bags)
    LD Systems Maui 28: $1,600
    LD Systems Maui 44 G2s: $2,900
RCF nlx 24s with ioa 18 Subs: $3,500 (subwoofer: $1,000)
    RCF 18 with tops: $5,500
Maui 5 Go: all plastic with metal grills
Bose L1 Pro 16: all plastic with metal grills
LD Systems Maui 28: wood cabinet, wood tops, metal enclosure
LD Systems Maui 44 G2s: identical build quality to Maui 28
RCF nlx 24s: subpole mount, no real connections on column arrays
    Music Testing (00:21:16)
Tested speakers at full volume with various music genres
Songs played: "Beat It Off", "City Girls", "Knock It Down", "Freaky Deaky", "Touch Her Toes", "Summertime"
Noted clarity, bass, impact, sheer loudness, and build quality during testing
    Final Scores (00:24:41)
The RCF speakers outperformed the Bose and Five Go speakers in all categories, including clarity, bass, impact, loudness, and build quality.
The RCF setup had the best overall sound quality but could benefit from a better subwoofer.
The Bose system has an impressive subwoofer but lacks clarity in the high end.
The Maui 28s have excellent clarity in the high end but lack bass compared to the Bose and RCF systems.
The Maui 44s offer the best all-around package in terms of sound quality and features and are the reviewer's personal choice for most events.
The Maui 28s are suitable for smaller events with up to 100 people.
Future videos will compare the Maui 44s to the EVOLVE 12s and test battery-powered speakers.

Already commented under Daryl's video but... going to do that here as well.
Column speakers are fashion product! I used to own RCF Evox J8 and HK Polar 12 and I have also done gigs with some other models.
They are fine for a room that's maximum 100 sqm. Over that, columns are just not a way to go! Why?! Because most of them become rather noisy and sound muddy when the volume goes up.
The second issue is that columns do not provide enough pressure for larger rooms and events with 100 or more people. They are almost never good for any outdoor event and almost no band wants to use them. Also, for MC-s they are a nightmare: the coverage is super wide, they almost never can provide decent strong and clear sound when the mic is used in a very crowded event.
When I had columns, I had to consider hardly before every event if they are sufficient or not. And most of the time - they weren't! I was constantly pushing them to the limits and then the sound got horrible and distorting. What is the point in having them?! Columns are perfect if you can use them for background music and at a maximum 60% level of their capacity.
Forget about aesthetics. Speakers are speakers and people are used to them. If you want to make your setup look nice, take a look at the entire thing: the room, the dj booth, stands, cables, lighting control etc etc.
Fundamentally, you can never go wrong with a classic 10 or 12 inch top combined with 15" or 18" subs! Just get a decent set of these and you are good to go any time, anywhere for years to come. Plus - point source systems with different elements can be combined according to the needs and specific to the event: subs needed or not, maybe just 1 sub sometimes? Or if you own many of them, you can use them as side fills etc etc. Or if you are going to an event with an existing PA, you can just grab one top for your monitor. I will never waste my money on fashion products again. Going only forward with classic top + sub setup and never going to consider any column stuff again.
Maybe the exception here is RCF NXL series, as they have already 6" woofers and these can push out some pressure on mid frequencies, have to try. At least what I could hear from this video, RCF NXL had wayyy better sound, I could easily make a difference between this and others when listening to claps, vocals and other mid level sounds. The problem with the demo here is that ICOA is not a best sub with NXL series, as its just not powerful enough. So if you want to just linearly crank it up, it might become an issue and sub can suffer some over heating other issues..

Sorry, gotta disagree on your assessment of the EV Evolve 50’s?! To me, hands down the best column arrays period,IMHO

As a side fill speaker sure. They are not main speakers

The Bose Pro16 slaughters the Evolve 50's. I know a few DJ's who got rid of their Evolve 50s cause they lack bass.

@djbentertainment9176 I have heard them side by side enough times to tell you the difference isn't much. For a wedding the evolve 50s are more than enough. It must be my market, but none of my clients want heavy excessive base

@@nodaysoff2005 I've seen a lot of people out here in California use the Evolve 50s along with a subwoofer. The good thing about the Bose is that they have excessive bass if need be but you definitely don't need to lug an extra sub. For almost the same price the Bose is a much better deal and sounds way better. Bose covers more of the frequency range. Just recently I heard a band performing through to pro 16 and the bass guitarist what's connected to the mixer and out through the pros. Do you think the evolve 50s can handle a bass guitar in a live situation? Like Rick said they are good side fill speakers but that's about it.
If EV had been thinking they would have made the Evolve 30s with a 12 and the evolve 50s with a 15 or 18. Instead the Evolve 50s sound bad and the evolve 30s sound worse. This is the same thing that I think about the JBL PRX column array. Column arrays should not use 12 inch subwoofers in my opinion. If that were the case you would see a lot of people just buying 12-inch subwoofers with tops. People didn't become interested in 12-in subwoofers until column arrays and some of those people have already regretted it. I can tell because a lot of column users are bringing extra subwoofers.
In all honesty though, the columns are a waste of money. For the price you would pay for a column system you can get a lot more sound with a traditional setup. 😎

seems like the 28 G3 is the new evolve 50 but much better and improved on.

@elliotchocano9374 evox 12 is definitely louder and has a bigger sub.. but, to act like the Evolve 50s are garbage is not true. People will say the Evolve 50s are better than the Bose Pro 16 half the time. Literally a 50/50 split.
