I did wonder how possible it was to do the journeys on Amtrak one after another. Probably enough space to expect problems and enjoy the stops at each end.
Some of the routes were more than 50 hours long. After each long train journey, we had 1-3 days as rest days to explore the city and meet friends.

Now if only we can convert these amtrak lines to high speed rails. Or isnt there a plan to do that already?
That would be great. I’ve taken high speed train (relatively) from NYC to Washington DC, it was a great experience.
How many days did the entire trip take?
It took us about 16 days to go from New York to Chicago to San Francisco to Portland to Seattle to Chicago to New York. We took breaks in between cities. Other trips were isolated and took less than 2 days each.
