For those who have difficulty imagining how someone could let their toilet (or any part of their home) get into such a state, even if someone has no physical disabilities preventing them from being able to clean, if they're depressed enough, it's just not going to happen. They're not disgusting, they're struggling.

*My solution*. My toilet had mineral deposits settle onto the bottom which had then stained over time. Even with my glove on, I could feel the hard, sandy texture of the minerals. Finally, I decided to empty and dry the bowl then added about 2 cups of white vinegar. I didn’t check on it for 4 hours but when I did, it had all dissolved. Also, I’ve had a couple of hard water/mineral deposits problems in areas that can’t hold standing water. In that case I’ve placed a folded paper towel on the area and saturated it with the vinegar and let it set. It has pulled up the deposits every single time with no damage to the surfaces.

One has to be careful putting tablets into the toilet tank. My Chemical Engineer husband told me long ago to not put anymore of the tablets containing bleach into the tank, as bleach will break down the composition of the rubber stoppers/sealing gaskets in the tank, making them hard, brittle, and prone to cracking.
Also, the caps that cover the two bolts holding the seat onto the main toilet can get pretty grungy. They flip up for cleaning and snap back down, covering the bolts.

Naval Jelly does a fantastic job cleaning out a toilet bowl. It contains phosphoric acid and eats it away. It's not fumey like muriatic acid. It needs to sit an hour. Flush the toilet and it's all gone. For the lid, sand it and use Krylon spray paint. That's how I got my 65 year old toilet looking good. I've tried CLR, but it's not quite as good as the Naval Jelly. 🐀🐾

This is my own opinion though. I also use 1/2 cup of cheap bleach and a squirt of cheap dishwashing liquid every single night before bed in all my toilets. You wake up to a fresh and great smelling bathroom every morning. I would be happy to help anyone clean up their bathroom if they needed my help. I know things can be overwhelming sometimes. You could start with a chlorine bleach based gel product and let it work for 30 minutes, flush then repeat the treatment. It will take most dirt and grime, and after flushing it will be easy to decide what type of other products to go for. It can be hard to tell what is basic grime, rust or other stubborn staining to begin with. For the stubborn stains under water level, poor a bucket of hot water down there, then have some laundry washing powder, white wash with enzymes and let it sit for a while, even over night. It often does the trick when other cleaners don`t do much.

You could also turn off the water, the valve is at the bottom behind the toilet. Then flush it and the bowl is empty. Then turn on the water and the tank will get full. Once full you can thrn flush.

Yes, you have to be careful with over-using tank cleaners, and detergent. I use them occasionally; but eventually you can ruin that rubber flap which lifts up off the pipe opening when you press down the handle to flush. Of course, all of these part can be replaced easily if they do get worn.

Use a product called 'Whink'. It is by far the best product on the market for rust removal. Along with many other uses. But the rust will dissolve as soon as you pour it on. Works for old stains on cloth too. However, it's better on white as it may take out the color. But it IS a product you can trust to do exactly as it promoted.

Three days? A trip ro home depot or Amazon and in under an hour and two bolts later, you have an entirely new toilet installed, not just a new toilet seat, but a whole new toilet bowl , seat and tank for under $200. You don't need 14 exclamation points , but you do need to turn off the water valve. No plumber needed, no power tools needed, just a dab of effort ,an adjustable wrench, watch a couple of you tube videos. and get to it, it takes less time than cleaning that disgusting bowl.

I bought a house where the previous owner obviously did not take care of the bathroom walls around the toilet. It seems no matter what I do the urine smell just will not come out. I stopped reading after the first 60 comments so don't know if anyone else suggested this but a method I used to remove "permanent" stains (those that resisted standard cleaning products) is to turn off the water supply, drain toilet then fill with white vinegar above the stain line and leave for at least 12 hours (24 if possible). the disgusting brown stains lift off, almost in one piece (yuck!) when wiped with a sponge & any standard cleaning product. Obviously, this won't work for under the rim and it won't remove all mineral deposit build up but no more brown stains or rust!
