Note: The countries have been chosen subjectively in order to have a representation of different heights and not to repeat the measurements or not to represent too similar measurements.

Altitude in La Paz is totally crazy. The city centre is at 3.640 about, in the north part it increases until 4.100 m and it decreases until 3.200 m in the south part. So there's an oscillating altitude between 4.100 m and 3.200 m. Almost 1.000 m apart between each extreme part of the city.

Biggest surprise to me was that Canberra or Brasilia were higher than Bern.
Switzerland actually has more lowlands than people might think.
Brasilia is a planned city and its location was a strategic choice, it is located in a high region and in the center of the country
I'm Brazilian and I was surprised too, even checked on Google the altitude of Brasilia. Google said it was even higher: 1200 meters. I would never have guessed. I always thought Brasilia's altitude was around 700 meters
Even high, from time to time it gets really hot here in Brasilia.
Bogotá in Colombia with more than 10 million inhabitants is the highest mega city in the world, surpassing the line of altitude sickness

Fun fact, Mexico City used to be a spot higher, but because it's sinking, it went down a place in the ranking.
So it'll only take about 2m of sea rise to flood Washington DC. Useful info.

I was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. And we don't usually realized how high is our city located. When major international artists come here, most of them suffer from altitude sickness.

Kinda related. I heard that after Spain conquered the Incas they got altitude sickness so they had to move the capital from Cusco in the mountains to Lima on the coast
I've been once to Peru and the city was located ~4.300m above the sea level. The first hours there was really hard to breath when doing just a little bit of physical exertion
But later when you get used to it is everything back to normal or there's always this feeling of not enough air ?

Ah yes, Amsterdam. A city near the sea, located below sea level.
Because parts of it used to be underwater.
@@andyjay729Here in the US, we have New Orleans... much of which has also been underwater. 🙄
Yeah and Baku isn't a city near the sea below sea level
Baku....
@@miniworldmuffin9134 Baku is on the shores of the Caspian Sea, which is technically just a huge saltwater lake in an isolated dead-end basin, disconnected from the world's oceans (water from the Caspian doesn't flow towards any sea or ocean). That's why Baku can be so far below sea level, in fact the whole Caspian is below sea level because it's not an _actual_ sea.
Amsterdam is more impressive because it is next to an actual sea (the North Sea in the Atlantic Ocean). The city is built in a location that should be underwater if it weren't for all the dams and engineering work to make it possible
Alpine Countries: We will build our cities on our fertile plains and valleys far away from the mountains.
Andean countries: 2.000m high ? That's so low.
This was enlightening. The highest capitals in the world is something I never would of thought of. Thanks for sharing.
My altitude record is "Mirador Tres Cruces", at 4100m located near Cuenca, Ecuador. Curiously, you can get there by Taxi, without the need of any skills. It's just 3 hours driving from the coast, so the body feel a brutal contrast
Can you describe the feeling from going from sea level to +4000m in just 3 hours?
I'm really curious, never done anything remotely close to that

Interesting to note that most countries require additional oxygen for pilots above 10,000 ft or so above mean sea level (exact regulations vary per country). That means in some of these cities pilots would need additional oxygen when they're still on the ground!

In India, the capital city of ladakh which is Leh, it's about *_3510 metres high above mean sea level_* _(MSL is Mean Sea Level)_ .
That makes *LEH* the highest elevated city in india.
Leh is the historical city of ladakh which played an important role in connecting the merchants of East China to Central Asia and Russia via by Silk Trade Route. This Trade Route is the longest and the most ancient route in Asia continent, it's built by many empires in Asia.
*Edit* :- LEH is also the 2nd largest city in North Head region of India after Srinagar, which is the largest city of Kashmir Valley.
*Edit 2* :- 3:33 NYOMA is not a city, it's a semi-urban region and its too located in south eastern region of LADAKH.
