I am a distant cousin of Michael Collins and I am absolutely taken aback by a couple comments. Some of the back story may be fiction, but the general premise is valid. Michael Collins was a great man, one whom I am proud to share lineage with. People die everyday, but at least Collins died for a cause he believed in. When's the last time you put your life on the line for a cause... @JuanMacready

Liam Neeson needs another AMAZING role. I know people enjoy the "Wronged Liam Neeson growls and shoots his way through Scary Europe" genre (Taken, Unknown), but he was SO amazing in films such as this one and Schindler's List and, more recently, Kinsey.

Films like this make me proud to be from Ireland. It shows how our ancestors were brave enough to oppose British tyranny and remove them from our land, before they murdered even more civillians than they had already done. It mightn't have worked out completely because the bastards still technically own the north, but we will never give up. Éireann go bragh.

Every people/nation requires control over it's destiny, and though all have a right to be become a country. It's not as much about economics or power (this can sometimes improve, sometimes get worst) as its about culture, language, justice, bonds and pride. It is a natural and logical desire, that exists deep in every man. A nation is NEVER better off living under the rules of another group. I'm sure the vast majority of the people of Ireland are glad and would never go back.

Enjoy it as long as you don’t use it as an historical reference…it’s not a biography it’s only a semi-autobiographical film...at least half of the film was completely untrue and never happened. It should have been told the way it really was which would have been much more respectful to his memory.

  • @CaesarIRE

    Where to start?
None of the countries of the UK were as violently assimilated into it as Ireland was. Most Irish folk felt little to no connection with the UK. Ireland had been poorly treated by the London parliament many times, moreso than any of the other countries.
And above all, it was the will of the Irish people. They had voted for John Redmond, and his party held the balance of power in the Commons.

  • @KevinMac96

@wwotin : Collins never liked the terms of the treaty for Ireland to only be a free state with 26 counties. He wanted full Irish independance. He only accepted it to avoid a war with Britain that the IRA couldn't win. He believed it was a step closer to finally gaining complete freedom from the Irish.

@RichardElden I disagree. The term 'British Empire' is known to have been in use since John Dee, (1527 - c.1609), produced his noted tract on English political and economic expansionism, in 1576. However, it may also be credited to Humphrey Llwyd, who is known to have used it in a similar publication of 1568. In a political sense, it is fitting to hold the date of incorporation as at the Union of 1707, when the colonial interests and assets of England and Scotland were formally merged as one.

Well, for a modern movie this one is pretty close to a tragedy or an epic tale, would the dialogues be better or at least written in versed poetry (but one can not have everything, can one?). The struggle of Ireland against England for liberty is of course a subject which makes writing a tragic tale quite easily, especially as the Irish has later make a compromise and fell over it apart to a bloody civil war; as always: Art is not as precise as solid history but it grants much more immortality.

You need to read up on history mate. The Normans invaded first, but have you never heard of the plantations? And the Pale? And Cromwell.
Home Rule was not "given" by 1914, it had passed the house of commons and had been rejected by the house of lords, which meant it was delayed. When WWI came around and the delay became indefinite, the Irish finally said they'd had enough.
