Thanks for posting this. I was at the game, right behind the goal where the crash barriers collapsed, I would have been aged 15 at the time. So, the solution to the situation - pass all the children back into the danger zone, continue with the game and blame the Chelsea supporters next morning!!!!!
very dangerous. similar thing happened for the heysel disaster. decrepit stadium which shouldnt host football matches. difference was that was a European cup final. The Taylor report has definitely saved lives. I loved the 80s football culture but we were treated like shite
Trouble was at this time grounds were neglected and we were starting to see the results. That’s why we had disasters in the 80’s because more years had passed and still nothing was done to fix the grounds and no money was spent
True , but surely one of the reasons no club bothered was the fact that clubs that did build new stands back then went tits up and plummeted down the leagues or into mediocrity. Chelsea for one ! Sheffield United another. Wolves built one new stand then nosedived...This was a huge warning of things to come. When you go to some of the existing old grounds (such as Aldershot's ) it's bewildering how their record crowds of 19,000 ever got crammed in. There's loads wrong with the modern game, but this sort of thing ending is one of the few huge improvements. And yes, the hooligans were a problem, but its hard to blame even them when far too many people are crammed onto a terrace with crumbling walls. The fact they lazily were blamed helped mask or deny the real problems.
Watched this form the enclosure. Game would never have continued in this day and age. Small ground that could not deal with such massive numbers of Chelsea.

Brisbane had bigger crowds than 24,000 before and after this with no such problem. So you have to wonder if something went on before the game kicked off. The Orient vs Chelsea 72 tie at Brisbane rd was over 30,000. No problems then either.
I was at the game in the main stand. When the first attack went in a big mob of Chelase fans pushed forward as if it were planned.. If you look at the movie clip you just see a small bit of it. A young lad I worked with was a Chelsea fan said they always pushed forward like that just to knock people over. Long time ago but just seen this,
The O's Chairman Brian Winstone accused Chelsea fans of deliberately weakening the walls, by attacking them with stanchion bars from the terracing, before, and during the game.
I was a Blackpool fan around this time and witnessed the last game of the season between Cardiff and Orient that would decide the fate of who would be relegated from Div2. Blackpool or Orient! A strangely lacklustre Cardiff, who could have finished 6th in the table, failed to turn up and Orient won courtesy of a Peter Kitchen goal. I remember trying to fight back the tears on the long journey home on that midweek night.
@@lordgriff It was a midweek night that Cardiff played Orient. I was there! Even die-hard Cardiff fans say that match was fixed! The only Cardiff player that seemed to be playing for the badge that night was Welsh International Phil "Joey" Dwyer!
@@robertroberts2666 it was a midweek game after all other games has finished. I think it was played on the day before the cup final which we almost took part in. There were always way more fans in the ground than the official attendance, mainly because of dodgy turnstile operators letting people in two for one for a little bung.

Went here in 76 , I was 15, loved the atmosphere of this little ground, orient 0 . 1 Cardiff.
Safety not paramount in those days.

Trouble at this time and in 1972 was the Chelsea thugs who went to games to cause trouble and trouble with military precision. Total bastards.
Jeff Smith no argument from me on that score but the lack of investment didn’t help either

Just amazing that the delay was only 5-6mins but back then we didn't make a meal of it but it was a touch nasty. Now they'd drag it all out.

Rumour has it the Blackpool players were on holiday when the game was played, so confident they were that they avoided relegation...
