In this video I take an honest look at my workflow in my shop and attempt to make it more efficient. I'm focusing on the "glue up" which is a common repetitive task that I always find myself doing when making wood projects. Up to this point I've stored all of the supplies and tools for doing this in random places around my shop.
The first step was to gather all of the tools and materials I typically use for this activity. Then it was a matter of working through how I would use them and come up with a storage solution that made sense. I ended up re-purposing (2) upper cabinets to store the supplies and I'm really happy with how it turned out!
The process was quick and easy but MAN has it made a difference in my shop! I really think that this type of DIY organization project is approachable for anyone and is sure to make your life easier. What are you waiting for?

When Travis opens up his cabinets and it's a hot mess
Me- "Oh my god, he is human after all"
A surprisingly good addition for my glue ups was a shower caddy. Good first order of retrieval, things can be separated in the different partitions, a handle to pick it all up at once and take it back to its spot on the shelf.
Potential tip: if you cut the tip of those heart straws at an angle so the bottom of the heart comes to a sharp point you can start at the bottom of the glue joint and scrape up. It should be easier to quickly wipe the glue out of the straw then move on to the next joint. As the tip wears down just keep sniping off a little more until eventually the straw gets too short to use anymore.
Quick tip on brad nails that are getting stuck like that. Rub a bar of soap across the brads before you put them in the gun, its like lubricantion for brad nails.
For the tape shelf, router a grove down the length so you can stick your finger in to pull the back ones to the front.
Hey there Big T you never stop thinking, then you know what you want, that is Shop Greatness. I like the way you end up knowing what you want. Keep up the great work.
That little sliver next to the tall glue bottles looks like it would be perfect for sandpaper sheets. I usually need some sandpaper during glue ups.
An organized shop is a stress free shop. Liking how you stored the nails and pocket screws especially with the tool.
A place for everything, and everything in its place.
You are right, keeping everything organized and clean, ready to use. Makes everything in shop so much better. It also keeps you focused and easier to complete your project.
Man this is a killer video. I was visiting a friend‘s workshop yesterday, and I’m gonna share this with him this morning.
To me another great shop organizational tool is a label maker. The label maker would come in real handy to label the sizes of all your brad nails and screws.
Great and fun video, as usual... Two suggestions... For the straws, if you cut the ends off at an angle, you get a sharper point that reaches into corners even easier. For the silicone mats, I took an old cheap towel bar and attached it to the end of my bench and hang them on that along with my shelf liner sanding/routing mat, out of the way and yet still convenient.
Both excellent ideas!
You know, this actually inspired me to rethink storage cabinets in the house as well. “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” Being intentional and making everyday life easier by taking just a little bit of time to organize a space can have such a huge impact on your peace of mind. I now find myself staring at my kitchen pantry which could definitely use some intentional organizational attention.
I really like your videos and this one reinforced a developing idea on organizing and using caddies for specific types of projects. I got my first order of CA glue and accellerator and will be building caddies this weekend.
Thanks again for the inspiration.
Brad nail starter... LMAO... not embarrassing at all. Almost as good as the dust collector. Nicely done, bro. Thanks for leaving that stuff in.
Haven’t had any issues getting my bostitch to sink nails in cold weather and the set I bought was very affordable. My last YT video I made a jig with my brad nailer and it was during our last snow storm in Colorado.
Nice way to explain LSS to the masses.
Have you gotten a label maker yet? It is an awesome use for the shop and around the house. I just label everything so I know where they belong and my wife can reference where the tools are when she needs it when I'm not home.
Yes I have one, just need to use it more
I enjoyed the make shift marker label! lol Uncharacteristic of the Shop Nation look... but works :D
Looks great and functional
My entire shed is a mess due to lack of storage, it bugs the hell out of me. Work flow was one of the things I was very good at organising when I worked in manufacturing but that was many years ago. Now I have a small space to do my woodworking and I need to sort it out. Travis gives that inspiration and shows how "simple" it can be.
HA! I can relate...I built two big 8x8x2 rolling shelves and that helped...for a while. Shelves tend to collect crap and dust and while I could roll them out of the way they seemed to always be in the way unless they were against the wall. I broke down and started building 14ft of Travis' ultimate cabinets and cannot wait to unload the shelf contents into the drawers and take down one of the shelves. Since my shop has 16ft ceilings in the middle I am already planning to rebuild one of the shelves up high and bolted to the wall...for that junk that you touch only once or twice a year!
It feels so good when everything is organized in an intentional and logical manner. Well done.
Sweet video you are one of my favorite channels to watch
I've been circling around a similar glue caddy idea, but like your execution much better. Especially liked the central handle and feet.
That’s a great thought. Organizing based off what items you use together
Heck, I'd be ecstatic if my shop looked anything like your "before" picture. My shop is such a mess, and you are right, due to my shop looking like a tornado just hit it and having to move a mountain of stuff out of the way just to do some simple tasks, I know getting it organized will help me out tremendously and that is why I love this channel so much! And, I am going to start my first 'organization' project this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!
Great video. Will help in my shop organization.
Looks good. Hahahahah turn on the dust collection!
Listening to you explain it at the beginning I was like meeeeeh yeah organization. Seeing the results though convinced me. Looks way better. Much better use of the space. Great inspiration to staying organized.
My garage shop shares the space with so many things. I'm always looking for a better way to organize . The inside cabinet dividers are a great idea, thanks.
Completely agree the small organizational and efficiency projects like this increase the enjoyment of working in the shop exponentially. Great video, I got a couple ideas from this. I'm headed to my shop tonight to create a few inspired by your video.
I am doing some shop, organizing as we speak. Great motivation!
I like your attention to detail, Travis. Good job. I enjoyed your tip on dust extraction - plug it in. A friend has suggested a range extender for my hybrid car - unplug the charging cable 😂🌞
I started collecting 3x5 card cases to organize screws, nails, or anything small. I plan on eventually making a cubby-hole shelf to store these with labels on each to identify each.
The small things like that is a big time saver. Think if you buy a soft drink or coffee every morning at $2.50 that's $650 a year! Yha it adds up.
Makes Sense, I will doing the Same. thanks for the Idea.
I was just browsing 1.8” Baltic Birch ply on eBay. Now I know why. Hahaha
Thanks!
You have read my mind. But this has to wait until I've build the bike shed so I can't call it a shop yet. And the videos are getting better. Seems like a lot of work but it is much appreciated.
They only thing I would have done differently is the tape. I would have used a peg to hang out on the side of the cabinet. I like the glue caddy. I might have made a spot in the caddy to put some straws. The spot wouldn't need to be high because I would cut the straws in half. Just a thought.... Great video.
That is actually exactly what I did!
To the point and details always makes the difference in the short and long run , thank you !
Nicely done.
Love the organizational videos - you’re speaking my language!! Look forward to more 👍
Excellent work! My whole shop needs some critical reorganizing. I have the tendency to put something in a place, and just living with it that way. Not necessarily messy, just, not optimal. Tool placement, workbench placement, accessories... everything. I really should spend some time fixing it up. Thanks!
Somebody knows their Lean Six Sigma ;) Love videos like this!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing.
Love it! I am in the process of finishing 14ft of the ultimate shop nation cabinets...hanging drawers and will start on drawer fronts and cabinet doors next. I really love the organization tips. Never thought how much I hate disorganized shops until I added some organization and now I want EVERYTHING organized. At this point I just want a home for everything so I always know where it is. I am looking forward to making some dividers...might have to play with some balsa wood as well as hardboard.
Very nice I like the black MDF made glue caddie idea
Love shop organization!! Nice work! Thanks for sharing!!
"...full of junk at this point" 😆 Enjoyed the video Travis -- great tips!
Very smart plan. I too am working on this concept. Thanks
Love it. I also like that all your little shelves and stuff could just be moved to another cabinet if your workflow changes
I Love the organization to you shop and your work. I look forward to your videos and plan on using some of your ideas and plans. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Travis , absolutely agree with you 100 percent. always enjoy your videos , keep persuing shop greatness ( more Videos) . Well done
shop is looking fab
Great job! I love organization/efficiency!
Great video. May I suggest painting (or colored electrical tape) the hardware bins- blue for pocket screws and orange for brads.
Why do you have separate totes for glue and silicone/straws?
Natural gas radiant heater is what you need. You can set a temp and once you garage reaches that level it keeps its there and functions on and off as needed. Also won't cause condinsation to accumulate on your tools and rust. Based on you walls it looks like you garage is insulated and a small 30,000 BTU unit will keep everything warm and comfortable.
I would say a mini split would be the better answer because he would have heat and cold air conditioning 😁🛫
Great job and I never get sick of awesome organizing projects! Please keep them coming.
I will say in all my years of manufacturing and many efficiency improvement projects I decided early on to eliminate all draws and cabinets and go with shadow board type organizers. Having everything visible and organized by task not to mention beginning able to see if a tool was missing/in use made us incredibly efficient .
You may want to consider one project utilizing that type of visible tool system. A French clear type originator with caddies would work very well! No more opening draws and doors to find things!
Just my two cents.
Thanks for the amazing content!
Great video stocked with some very useful ideas. You have motivated me to do a similar project in my shop.
I agree.
So.... fun fact I just learned on my current project after a year of owning these things..... but on those silicone glue brushes, on the opposite end of the brush is a flat side. You use the flat side to scrape off the excess glue, also works great in corners (like the heart straws). :D
How about adding a roll of constitution paper roll to the end of the rolling work bench for covering your table top. You can roll out what you want and slice it from the roll and once your glue-up job is complete it can be placed in your recycle bin.
For the Brad nailer hang up, I had the same issue, and still due from time to time. Talked to the manufacturer, recommendation was to dial down the strength adjustment (wheel on the back) drive a few nails, then dial it back up
Hmm I'll try that!
@@ShopNation if that doesn't work you should try and using the LSA for the tool (if you registered it) and tell us about the process
Another great project. Thanks for sharing
As usual you created shop organization that looks great
Id contact Ridgid about the brad nailer. Its a common issue for it to not set nails. The LSA should handle it or replace with the new model. Anyway...good vid as always
2 thing great video and good idea
Thank you, very helpful
Love your channel man, keep Grinding!
Not much happening in my shop today. Not heated and it is -15 this morning.
Dude. You are crushing it on these videos! Keep them coming!!!
Always get such great ideas from you vids
Love videos like this!
Looks good !
Great video as always. The only thing you left out is the fact that you have to put everything back once you are done with it. All my stuff has a place...I just am lazy and don't put it back. haha
Hey Travis, so I’ve been having the same issue with the “brad starter” so much so I was starting to take the screws off the back to see if lubing the tube would help…. And then I noticed a lever under the “18 GA Brad” label and it was at the “-“ sign…. Moved it to “+” and was able to shoot 2” brads no more issues… worth a shot.
Love it
I would love to see you tackle dust collection at the miter saw. Some sort of 3D printed attachment that you can sell me because I have the same Dewalt saw you have and dust collection is terrible. Keep making great content.
Actually it’s not stupid space. Just prior to watching this I did a bit of organizing in my small garage as a result of another one of your vids i saw. Simply put I am tired of spending a half hour looking for stuff sometimes for just one item. Do this enough times and I spend stupid time looking for stuff. My neighbors must laugh at me as I wander around the garage. Anyway I saw some great ideas here tonight I can put to use right away. Looking to be fully organized for 2024… maybe. Thx
As for your brad nailer not shooting properly, have you tried to clean and most importantly, lubricate it. Might help.
Very nice.
Can I have your old spray gun lol 😂 great video I need to get more organized so your videos are perfect keep ‘em rollin!!!
Looks great, love to see your flow and helps me a ton. I was thinking you could drop a cut out handle in the middle and grab it ALL like a lunchbox to stand on its "back" or leave as is on your work bench. 4 less options to grab?
Tis.. tis.. @4:40.. cutting through sheet with no riving knife??? Lol..
P.s. love your videos & colour scheme!!!
You forgot to show us the two cabinets that you jammed all the stuff that was in those cabinets. Part II? Lol. Thanks for the great content. 👍🏻
😂😂😂
I'm considering getting the dust right collector and was wondering what you think of it
nice
Hi. I’m a new subscriber. I think the bench top porter cable jointer could benefit from a new dust port. I’m swapping mine out for a 4”, but non fit just right. 3dprintideas. Keep up the good work
Organization is a personal issue reference work flow, and space available. Again Good ideas. Question? What is up with your cordless finish nailer. Is it truely being effected by thy weather as you stated or is it the battery or just not a good tool.
You have Heart shaped straws all over the shop because you love making things!
Great video, Travis! Your organization change here is very Adam Savage.
FYI - the mechanical pencil link you have is broken.
I’ll get that fixed
Have you noticed if the colored MDF is any better/worse with moisture?
Silicon pad is missing in action :D
Hey Travis, any thoughts on that glue caddy being 3D printed to sell for the online store?
Cabinets are for storage. That wasted wall under the cabinets is where your french cleat system should go so you can SEE and GRAB. You talk about wasted time walking an extra 5 steps is important whne added up (I agree), but just imagine how many times you'll open and close those cabinets... You could make a lot of videos on how to do that. Just an idea.
What brand are this small parts organizers? They look perfect sized. Mine all seem to be too short (wasted space) or too big to fit in the cabinets. Thanks!
I hope you start selling the caddy's
Nice! And something I need to do too. How long before you redesign cupboard 1 so the organiser cases are horizontal?
They are just barely too wide to do that! I know that would have been ideal
Do those organizers fit in your workbench? I am halfway through the build, but cant find organizers to fit
Time to buy a new brad nailer man lol
