  • Trout Spey 101 - Part 1 What is Trout Spey?
Trout Spey is a term coined lighter weight spey or switch rods. These rods range from 2-5 weights in lengths 10'6" - 11'6" approximately. Just like their larger cousins for steelhead or salmon, they are meant to be cast with two hands.
Trout Spey rods are ideal for presenting subsurface patterns whether swinging or nymphing. Soft hackles, nymphs, or streamers are all ideal. Trout Spey can also be called Micro Spey or trout switch. If you are a trout angler looking to swing flies, strip streamers, or nymph more efficiently, consider trying a trout spey set-up. They are really fun to fish!

After much frustration with a single hander, I have switched over to 2 handers. Trout spey is much better as you can cast using spey casts having the anchor in front or side of you. My 4wt trout spey is 11' long and can handle the short chunky 15' OPST Commando head for tight quarters fishing, 23' Rio Skagit head for sink tips and big flies, and 29' Rio Scandi head (dry fly presentation).

sage one 3wt Trout Spey, with a hardy marquis 7 reel. If you ever need anything just give us a call or check out our online store. Just revamped it and adding product weekly, but if it's not up it's easy to do orders over the phone. Thanks! - Sean

Silver Bow Fly Shop do you think there would be enough capacity for backing if I run a rio scandi short or a commando head. Harry's backing capacities are really weird on their site
