@@vv4437In my opinion, Imagine a sentence "I can't do it without you".You can't say I must not do it without you. Now try to convert it into past form. I couldn't have done with you. When done is mentioned it represents a past form so we are using couldn't. I am not sure whether my explanation is right or not.
