How to *easily* set up stubborn tubeless tyres

  • Sometime tubeless tyres can be a pain to set up, whether you know what you're doing or not. Getting a tricky tubeless tyre to seat correctly isn't always straight forward and it can be hard to know how to get a stubborn tubeless tyre to seal. I bought myself pump-up compressor to use at home and so far I'm super pleased with how easily I can now set my tyres up tubeless.

The pop pops are absolutely satisfying. I don't bother with the valve core or seating the tire first. I just put most of the tire on, dump in sealant, put the rest of the tire on, inflate it with compressor. if it doesn't seat i deflate it and spray some soapy water around the bead/rim area and go again. usually works.

I've been running tubeless on gravel, mountain, and road bikes for the last 7 years and the best piece of advice I can give a person, in regard to tubeless tyre set up, is to bite the bullet and buy a cheap air compressor right from the giddy up. I struggled for 2 or 3 years, setting up tubeless tyres, then I finally bought a compressor. It's definitely a game changer.

I have had amazing luck with hugo tubeless rims, Maxxis tires and a hand pump. Sometimes it just all works out quite well. I use extra sealant and care not about the extra ounces. I put my sealant in just before installing the last few inches of bead. I not longer have to deal with flats when riding, even in the thorny desert. Thanks for the video. A great way to start my day.

Hi Juliet, I got quite a good deal on a Planet X; On-One FreeRanger; it had been built for a Continental / US brake set up; so I saved near on 300 quid, hard to resist and I will swop the brake hoses over in the next month. When I think that for quite a while I was considering buying a Specialized Diverge Base Carbon, the £1.3K+ difference in price now seems quite extraordinary, especially as the FreeRanger has proven to be more than adequate for a world weary old sod like me (72 in May). Living on the SE tip of England we have great coastlines in each directions to ride along, especially Northwards to our favourite stop off El's cafe at Reculver. My other steed is a 2018 Roubaix Elite...best bike I've ever owned and ridden, Thanks for replying, looking forward to watching more VLOGS from you. Stay safe and ride safely too.

Great video. I’d recommend a Top Peak Joe Blow pump. Integrated pressurised canister. Super simple. Also recommend using electrical insulation tape as a first layer, to cover the holes in the rim. Then a layer of tubeless tape, like the pink stuff from Muc-Off, to seal it all in. A better set up than two layers of rim tape as it’s easier to remove should the need arise.

Really useful video that's pretty much the way I found works best too. The only thing I do differently is put the soapy water on before putting the tyre on the rim, it goes on easier and I am paranoid about marking the rim and ruining the sealing surface. For the pressure in the tyre it is usually half what you filler the air tank with give or take some leakage when first seating. Also I work on my bikes in the house too, nothing wrong with that 😀😀🚴

Just made the switch to tubeless and it’s a whole mixed bag of success and failure. The first wheel was amazingly easy, managed to get it to inflate with a track pump. The second wheel was a complete bugger to do. Ended up ruining my track pump, I fairness it was old. Bought one with a charge cylinder and inflated the tyres but it kept losing pressure. Ended up retaping the rim and using a different bung grommet on the valve. What a nightmare, but definitely worth it.

Great video but anyone else thinking “hang on, the tyre didn’t actually seat until after Juliet put the sealant in (as evidenced by the popping sounds) so why faff about trying to seat it first?”. Personally, I leave the valve core in and put the sealant in through a gap between tyre and wheel rim, put the rest of the tyre on then inflate - works every time and much less faff.

@@JulietElliottsChannel So you take an old 2L coke bottle, put 2 holes in the cap and screw in 2 tubeless valves, which i had spare luckily. You then remove one on the cores from the valves, and insert a tube, I used an old brake bleed tube which has the clamp on it, and attached the other end to the wheels' valve. Now attached your track pump to valve that still has the core in on the bottle cap, and with the clamp closed on the tube inflate the bottle to 100psi, which is a little scary, then release the tube clamp and the air rushes into the tyre and 3 lovely pings sound, tyre beaded! This vid is where I saw it - czcams.com/video/EtmatxJG_zg/video.html

I use the big-daddy compressor I have for the 30 inch all terrain tyres on my Hilux. Just have to be ready to hit the off button when the bead seats, as it moves so much air it'll blow it clean off the rim if you're not careful. It can inflate the 4 inch wide tyres on my fat bike to 80psi in about 4 seconds!! That air shot looks like it's a much more sensible way of doing it (though I do quite enjoy the mild peril of my way...)

@@edwardkemp7246 It shouldn't be a problem because of the difference in volume. If for the sake of argument the tyre is twice the volume of the Airshot then the tyre would only end up with half the pressure and that is if all the air went from the Airshot to the tyre. In reality though the air would stop going into the tyre once the pressure in the tyre was equal to the pressure in the Airshot so it would be lesss than that. Not a very clear explanation but hopefully you see what I mean.

    • @enigma1000
      @enigma1000 Před 3 lety

Doesn’t seem likely to be an issue. If the volume inside the tyre equals the volume inside the air shot tank then when you release the airshot the pressure will roughly halve in filling the tyre. That assumes the tyre seats and you don’t lose any pressure from tyre or tank. You should be ok with the tank at it’s maximum rated pressure. I’d be wary of using a large compressor not designed for bike tyres and blowing tyres off rims. That could be dangerous..l

@@JulietElliottsChannel Thanks Juliet - I've ordered one. I think I will need to re-tape the wheel but will give it a shot with the Airshot first:)

You can get a bike pump that doubles tubeless tyre seater. It has a inner chamber press a button and it dumps the air in one hit

I've never used tubeless. How is it when you get a nail/screw/glass through the tire on a ride when you're out in the middle of nowhere?
Bring a spare tube I guess? Thanks for the informative video.

From experience getting a puncture with a tubeless isn't great, I think motorbikes and car sealants are a lot better where you won't even notice a puncture. Even a small puncture on a road bike will spray sealant everywhere so you have to stop and wait for it to seal a bit. The pressure will drop really low but it will get you home unlike an inner tube. Unless you want to carry an inner tube, tyre levers and pump on every ride I would prefer tubeless but I hate how much effort they are to install and maintain like topping up sealant. Not to mention how much all these extras add up to

How do I tell if I have a bad tire? Redone my tubeless set up 3xs. Got the pop for stealing & go for a ride & it goes flat within 3 miles?? Hmmm

I wish I was such a good mechanic as you do. I barely can do a proper chain cleaning. Is that true we need to add sealant at least once a year?

The more you do it the better you get. Making mistakes is all part of the learning process so just give it a go. I’d refill the sealant more often, personally

@@JulietElliottsChannel Thanks. I need to learn more mechanics. I want to travel long distance with my bike and most know how to fix it. Thanks for the tip about the sealant I haven’t add any yet for almost a year. ✌🏽

Another way that works for me is to set up the tyre with an inner tube and then break one bead to get the tube out. Reseat the tyre and inflate to seat it and then add the sealant through the valve.

I think i will stick to tubed tyres its so simple if you get a puncture. Ive seen so many in a mess with tubless when they get a flat. And they do get flats

A tool like the Airshot is invaluable, I think. Expensive, but worth it for the reduced aggravation. Or if you’re a bit cheap like me, you can make something similar from a 2 litre pop bottle, valves from old inner tubes, and aquarium tubing.

    • @teeambird2079

That sounds interesting do you just stomp on the bottle for a shot of air to inflate?
