Usually major MET donors and fashion houses pay for the tickets to the MET Ball ($75,000+ for table). Celebrities get suggested to said fashion houses and then get to attend mostly for free in return for promoting their clothing on the red carpet. Yes they all later eat in these outfits but some designers find a way to alter them quickly to make them comfortable.
Although that said, it's my understanding that ultimately, while money talks, Anna Wintour has the last word always. Without her approval you won't be allowed to attend.
It's going to be very interesting to see how the gala changes once she retires.
It's my understanding that Anna Wintour didn't rush into including social media stars and reality stars. But the fact is these people get million views in no time at all. She saw it was good marketing. This is the reality we live in now. Not saying they can't be fashion mavens. But it sure is a new world.
Worth mentioning this year Lewis Hamilton paid for a table at the Met Gala just so up and coming Black fashion designers could showcase their work. I thought that was really nice of him.

Every Met Gala has a specific theme- I know Joan Rivers (THE GOAT,RIH) would always critique if the attendee held to theme and expressed it appropriately - like the year the theme was “camp”slot of the stars had no idea what camp meant

LuLu Roe is so horrible- it was almost like getting someone hooked on heroin and then cutting them off. They got women “hooked” on a certain lifestyle and then yanked it away. They didn’t care about ANYTHING but the initial 5k - they just wanted 5k from every women in America and it’s disgusting

I loved Kim’s look. I love Demna’s vision for Balenciaga and his references. I don’t think she was supposed to be on theme, but the way I interpreted it basically comes down to how Kim Kardashian (and the whole family) became such an omnipotent force in American culture and social media that she doesn’t even need to show her face or body anymore. She’s instantly recognizable even when she’s completely covered from head to toe.
