- Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Public Safety Dominic Leblanc and Justice Minister Arif Virani announced the federal government was proposing several measures as part of a national action plan to help crack down on auto theft.
The plan includes legislative and regulatory changes, including proposed amendments to the Criminal Code, to institute tougher penalties for auto theft with ties to violence, organized crime and money laundering as well as new offences targeting the possession and distribution of devices that facilitate auto theft.
The plan also includes intelligence and information sharing enhancements between municipal, provincial, federal and international police and customs officials. And finally, the officials added that intervention improvements will allow more shipping containers to be examined, through increased capacity at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the integration of new targeting tools.
“You see a lot of us here today - a lot of federal ministers, a lot of elected officials - here on Victoria Day because we take this seriously,” Freeland said.

The Canadian government is an absolute wreck show. An example of bureaucratic incompetence for textbooks.
This Liberal government is the most incompetent government in Canadian history.
Solving a problem created by themselves. What a Joke. 😂
that is a ridulous statement!
This is how they solve them...by coming at all of us - translation: Implementation of telematics technology in vehicles to provide real-time data, Enhanced use of GPS tracking systems for 24/7 monitoring, Automated License Plate Recognition, Advanced Container Scanning technologies such as X-ray and gamma-ray imaging, Creation of shared databases between local police, RCMP, CBSA, and other agencies, implementing platforms for real-time data sharing and collaboration among law enforcement agencies and industry partners, digital forensics to analyze data from vehicle telematics systems and other digital evidence, Cybersecurity Measures, Increased deployment of high-resolution surveillance cameras in high-risk areas and along major transportation routes for monitoring monitor, drones equipped with cameras and tracking technology to patrol large areas and provide aerial surveillance, keys with encrypted signals or immobilizers that disable the vehicle’s engine.
@Ziggy-mh5dc you are correct, my apologies
You let the criminals rein free then act surprised.
The problem was created by car companies adding more toys to carsthat left huge security holes in them. This is entirely the responsibility of var companies and consumers being IwannaIwannaIwanna

Hey Chrystia did you adjust your daily intake of whatever you taking? You acting more strange than a week ago.
Freeland has a serious medical issue, she likely should be diagnosed 🙏🏻🇨🇦
Look at Freeland in the background. This woman should have to take a drug test to be in office. She is always tweaking out smiling, twitching and head nodding at everything.
i think she takes anti anxiety meds
She’s communicating to her multiple personalities
Head nodding is common India 😂
in lieu of a drug test just give her a pink slip

They take nothing seriously! If they did they wouldn't be transferring magnotia to a medium security prison and they wouldn't have created a revolving door justice system for repeat offenders!
got that right...
Lol, scanners. Just leave your keys in the car & don't forget to pay your higher insurance rates. The right to defend property is what's needed.
Suddenly Justin's government wants to "take things seriously." 🤪
Didn't Canadian police tell the citizenry to leave their keys close to the door so criminals can break in without endangering families lives.
Yes they did! For our protection. 🤔🤪

The fact that we are still in the 'talking phase' of the situation is ridiculous, they know which ports the cars are going and probably the organizations behind it and nothing is being done.
Big deal too little too later

Nothing concrete
Thanks Pierre for forcing the Liberals to finally do something
oh they are doing something except we have to pay "stake holders" for their failed policies to keep us safe and the way that they do that is by spying on all of us 24/7.

After nine years of setting up a situation where auto theft thrived, you're now going to do something about it?
Freeland forgot to bring her BFF Yaroslav Hunka.
Thank God for Pierre ,otherwise these idiots would not do a thing...lol..they are gone no matter what they do ,we had enough of the corruption ! And the bobbin !
What took you so long? Citizens have been making it clear for months of the thefts and their loses.
Crack down on these con artist insurance companies.
We shouldn't be paying as much or more than the vehicle costs over 2/3 years. Ridiculous.
Oh wow. Now you protecting us? Great thanks. So none of this was done before?
If every car who enters highway 407 are recorded why they make more of them around the country in all major highways and highway 2s?
As usual 9 years to late ad it is someone else's fault.
If the government is serious about stopping automobile theft then setup a process to open all outgoing containers to confirm no automobiles are inside unless listed on a valid cargo manifest. Then reseal containers before they are loaded. Also when people are caught doing this crime the jail sentences should be a lot longer. Extra enforcement will not stop this behaviour when penalties are so light.
Please stop helping us
The only thing that stops crime is the assurance that they will get caught. Heavier penalties are useless.
Like just handover the car keys?
You really think a car their cares if their license is suspended? They are driving a stolen car when they are caught, lack of license doesn't matter to them one bit.
So more tax money instead of just enforcing excising laws. Their not even giving the minimum sentence for these thieves, just released the same day
Should remind RCMP to do their job n not be afraid of going against drug cartels and triad. How many shipments n drug factories got busted in canada..?? Wht modern technologies r their using for detection..? NONE??Users hve to finance their addictions…. unless govt provide more safe consumptions n safe drugs …
The rcmp need to be disbanded...
Police will patrol the streets to make sure everyone leave their keys and documents in the car to achieve de-escalation. 😂
My question is why the Government reacts only now? Why it takes too long to implement? Why the auto theft mafia acts without punishment?
Shameful you can't resolve anything....
How about a mandatory 3 year sentence for the first offence that you have to serve in its entirety. An every similar offence after, it doubles, so three becomes manadatory 6 that you serve in its entirety.
Affordability for fuel and to pay for groceries once you get there? Strike action at work to get 100% raise to pay for the rise inflation. You’re just not listening to Canadians and because of this Canadians aren’t listening to anything you have to say.
6 million $ for speed cameras and what ever else the speed cameras will surely catch the thief’s
But no xray scanners at the ports...
How embarrassing it is to listen to these crooks and frauds .
Isn't all this talk kind of useless if ( for whatever reason, can't seem to understand ) if our whole judicial system just seems to let everyone out so easily to go do it again the next day? Didn't the guy in Victoria recently steal three cars in three day along with assaulting a woman and throwing her to the ground?
Just make the punishments more severe. I think part of the reason why this is happening is because we are just too soft on crime.
Why are they stealing vehicles in the first place? 🥇 Affordability taxed to death leads to more crime and more organized criminal activity
Cluelessness these people what prison $84,000.00 to incarcerate them/ year they are only making $32,000.00 / year go figure
Tax free stay with 3 meals a day way better than being homeless
How about telling the courts to DO THEIR JOBS! And lock up criminals! Many of these culprits are repeat offenders.
Oh Shoot. I just bought a hanging basket to keep my FOBs outside. Are you telling me I have to return it?
They're absolutely powerless to stop crime. You CANT legislate the lawless.
What about going after the car manufatures that do 0 to rebuke bad players from accessing cars?? Why are we responsible for having to secure our cars when manufactures don't seem to care? Car manufactures don't care because it means more sales and Governments don't care as it means more Taxes from sales! This government (federal\Provinical) do not care abut these issues!!
What do you mean, we have to pay the government to pay the "stake holders" so that they can keep us safe. its a public private partnership. It is not the manufacturers' fault if drivers don't want enhanced security. It is inconvenient most of the time, until you need it. You can go buy lots of locks. Steering locks, brake locks, wheel locks, but theyre a hassle most people won't do
@@johnmacleod2487 Who said that drivers do not want enhanced security???
And yes you can go and buy 3rd party security options everyone knows that, but manufacturers should at least offer the choice! They are not doing enough to help the enduser secure their vehicles and that is just lazy manufacturing!!
You probably own a Hyundai car which you can start with a screw driver!

lol no not really, its actually the government thats coming for you this is what the proposal actually means: Implementation of telematics technology in vehicles to provide real-time data, Enhanced use of GPS tracking systems for 24/7 monitoring, Automated License Plate Recognition, Advanced Container Scanning technologies such as X-ray and gamma-ray imaging, Creation of shared databases between local police, RCMP, CBSA, and other agencies, implementing platforms for real-time data sharing and collaboration among law enforcement agencies and industry partners, digital forensics to analyze data from vehicle telematics systems and other digital evidence, Cybersecurity Measures, Increased deployment of high-resolution surveillance cameras in high-risk areas and along major transportation routes for monitoring monitor, drones equipped with cameras and tracking technology to patrol large areas and provide aerial surveillance, keys with encrypted signals or immobilizers that disable the vehicle’s engine.

Well their catch and release bail policies made it profitable to continue to steal cars.
It also has significantly increased insurance rates.
Harsher punishment is needed for deterrence.
