Camera Lucida 9.1 Bixby Demo

  • In this video I go through the entire process of using Camera Lucida 9.1 to make a sketch of Bill Bixby. Many people requested a longer, slower video, so here you have it. I still fast forward through some of the more tedious shading. I also decided to start the video with the timelapse to show the end result first.
    This video of me sitting at the table was taken with an iPhone. The time lapse was created within the app itself. The full screen capture and audio were accomplished using the native iOS screen recording function.
    Camera Lucida can be found at itunes.apple.com/us/app/camer...
    The stand I used can be found on Amazon. Sometimes it it out of stock. If you find one that looks the same, then it is the same. As of 1/30/2021, this one is in stock: -www.amazon.com/dp/B07HGZR2WF/...

    Hi there and thank you for the videos. I have got the app now and just got my stand in the post today, but realise I now have to go and get a stool to sit on as my chair is too low. I will be broke at this rate. I have not used it yet, but it all seems to do what it should.
    I am rather disappointed at the negative mean comments about the app by some mean spirited people who seem to think everyone should only do things their way. As far as I am aware artists have always used whatever tools were available to help with their art, and consider this to be a tool to use however you want. I am hoping to use it to just get my design down on paper to ensure my perspective is good and get things in the correct places. I will have fun with it anyway. Thanks. ps. I did try using the front camera on the ipad and a little mirror but could not get the perspective anywhere near right. I will keep trying!

    • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog Před 4 lety

      Wildwest100, you're right - I often use a stool as well! As for using the mirror, if you're using your own mirror, you might be suffering from "tape droop". (I just made that up.) I found that when I taped a dimestore mirror to my iPad I could get the adjustment right, but that within 5-10 seconds it was out of alignment because the mirror was drooping. If you're sure that's not the case, feel free to use the "Contact Us" button in the app and send me an email. Maybe I can help you through that (admittedly difficult) process. Hint: The trick is using the alignment reference image the app provides. As for the negative comments - I know what you mean! My approach is to stick with answering questions and try my best to not get into philosophical art discussions.

    • @wildwest100
      @wildwest100 Před 4 lety

      @@evilAshTheDog Hi again, yes thanks for the comment on 'tape droop'. I think the mirror was quite stable as I used gaffa tape, but think I just did not have time to get it right. I will persevere and see how it goes, but kind of think I will get better results using it on the stand when I can get a stool or something to make it a bit more comfortable. As for the unpleasant comments, yes, it is best to ignore them.

One suggestion to make the video more personal & even more positively impacting towards your audience: do not hesitate to show yourself explaining - humans like facial expressions: augments sympathy, helps convincing and bring some nice variation in the video . • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog Před 4 lety +1

      Nancy, an iPhone works just fine. With my older eyes, I prefer the larger screen of the iPad. The size of the image you create on paper is primarily determined by the camera's field of view. And that is determined by how far the camera is from the drawing surface. A good rule of thumb is that the size of your final drawing's largest dimension will be about equal to the distance the camera is from the paper. The stand shown in this video is the only pre-made one that I can recommend because I use it. It is also height adjustable! There are a few tricks (like properly cropping your reference photo and changing a couple of default settings) to making the largest art possible with the app. If you get the app, don't hesitate to contact me with questions!

    Great job, though you ought to have left the camera running a touch longer for the finished drawing.

    Anyone know what's the largest size you could project? Was thinking about using a Klsniur Gooseneck Tablet Holder to project on a large canvas such as 16x20 or 24x30 - would this be feasible?

    • @pierres8044
      @pierres8044 Před 9 měsíci

      This video shows the tablette adjusted at a height (in report to the surface of the paper size). Probably suitable for an 8 x 10. Remember you WATCH THE SCREEN (the tablette) while drawing, and your hand is below on the sheet of paper. The larger the size of paper, the higher the location of the tablette. Therefore, for a 16 x 20, your neck should have an extra ... 12" length, for a 20 x 24, a 24" long neck, .... or much longer arm length

    I can't get my picture in the frame. I've got this stand.. maybe I'm too short, I can't see the iPad from where my chair sits. I've tried the mirror method and it's the same, can't get the target into the frame enough to get a good line up. I'm not sure why it's not working.

    • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog Před 2 lety

      Rebecca, I recommend you use the "contact us" button within the app so that I can properly help you through this. When I'm using the app in an "overhead" mode with the device pointed down at my drawing surface, I'll often use a bar stool to boost me up a bit. Or, I'll draw on a coffee table to lower it. If you're using a mirror with the front lens, it shouldn't be too hard to ensure your target is seen by the camera. When you send me email, a photo of your setup will help a lot. I'm sure we can figure out what the hurdles are and overcome them!

    • @evilAshTheDog

      That’s one of my favorite features. If you are in the drawing mode then your paper and camera are locked so when you zoom or pan, they stay perfectly in sync. In the setup mode zooming would indeed enlarge the final drawing.

    Those of you who are still on the fence, please give me your GPA coordinates so I can push you to the right side :D - The app does everything you want it too. The creator gets back to you with all the answers you have. There are a couple of minor things, such as I would like to be able to resize the image while it's still transparent, but perhaps I missed on how to do it? Either way, the app is amazing and it boosted my productivity by- I dunno, a lot.
    Not only that, but the app is also inspiring - the more you use it, the better you get at seeing things that make your brain recognize what it needs to recognize to create what you want to create. Which in turn makes you want to experiment and draw without the app, and you can literally see you your drawing/painting skills levelling up.
    The only regret I didn't think to look Luci up years ago. We could have been together for so much longer!! :D
    I am Russian, and in Russian toes are called foot fingers, which in turn makes a big toe a foot thumb. Therefore I proclaim this app FOUR THUMBS UP APP!

    • @CameraLucidaApp
      @CameraLucidaApp  Před 4 lety

      большое Вам спасибо! Anka, resizing the image is performed before you enter the draw mode. So, while you see the screen that has the "hand holding the pencil" at the bottom, you can pinch and rotate the image to resize it. As you do this, it becomes transparent so that you can see where it will be placed on your drawing surface. When you're happy with the placement, you hit that "hand holding the pencil" button to enter the draw mode. At that point, the camera and reference is are locked together so that if you zoom or pan, you are actually magnifying the view for detail purposes. Does that make sense? Please don't hesitate to write to me using the "contact us" button. And yes, I do try to get back to people as quickly as possible!

    • @evilAshTheDog
      @evilAshTheDog Před 4 lety +1

      Before you hit the draw button, you see the reference image you've chosen. At that point you can pinch on the image to crop, rotate, enlarge, move, etc. While you're adjusting the image, it turns transparent so that while you're doing this you can see both the image and the paper you're going to draw on at the same time. So, by looking at your screen and seeing both your drawing surface and the ghost reference image on it at the same time, you know where the final drawing will be placed on the paper. This works great for creating composite drawings, etc. -Pete

A lot of people search for "Camera Lucia 9.1" and would you believe adding the version number makes the search not work right! (And the app is up to 10.1 now.) This video shows the tablette adjusted at a height (in report to the surface of the paper size).

    I wonder if you would help me with a question. First of all I really like this product. It is fascinating. I have never used anything like this app in my artwork, and frankly I never will. Please don’t take offence. I work freehand, by eye and most of the time from direct observation. This is what I prefer. After many years I’ve become pretty good at it, but I could never draw as accurately and as fast as you can with this Camera Lucida computer. Recently, I watched a video of a man drawing a self portrait using an ipad and this Camera Lucida app but claiming he was working freehand using a mirror. My question, I believe the art world is big and has room for everything, but do you feel this man crossed a line? I hope you don’t mind this comment and question. I really don’t know what to think.

    • @CameraLucidaApp
      @CameraLucidaApp  Před 5 lety +3

      Jeff, your question is a good and fair one! There are two primary criticisms my app receives. The first is that by essentially "just" tracing a still image, the resulting work is inevitably void of life, creativity, and artistic merit. The second is that by using such a tool, you bypass years of training and practice and are, in a sense, cheating. Interestingly, by far, the vast majority of critics of using this (and similar) tools are artists who have spent years fine tuning their skills. Yet, there are just as many artists who, like me, were taught by professors of art who believed "there are no rules to art" and that there is no shame in measuring, gridding, using value reference cards or even a ruler to draw a straight line. As for the video you watched, I won't comment without watching it first, but I firmly believe that honesty is important in all aspects of life and that untrue representations about how a piece was created is NOT ok. But, I've drawn many self portraits of myself using the app (and many without) and it's just really, really fun to draw without worrying that my eye spacing was off by *just enough* to ruin the realism. I also take pride in telling people, "I used my app to help me draw this!" As for the first concern, that the app creates uninspired art, I urge people to check out the art created in our Facebook group before they make this judgement. People are using the app to decorate cakes and cookies, to create 3D sculptures, to paint on rocks and arrow-heads, to create water colors, oil paintings, pencil sketches and yes, charcoal drawings. If my own drawings come out being uninspired, it's not because I used the app, it's because, well, I'm just not a very creative artist! Some people use the app just to get perspective and key features on a face correct while others use it throughout the entire process. It's a tool. A tool that allows people to be more creative, not less. And as for "cheating", well, cheating is when you break the rules and I just can't seem to find the "art rule book". :)

    • @jeffbond5483
      @jeffbond5483 Před 5 lety +2

      @@CameraLucidaApp Thank you for your honest answer and taking your time to write this good comment. Certainly, most of all, I do not consider tracing as cheating. Nor should this art be discredited in anyway. After all, artists have been tracing a projected image ever since the 1400s. I just can not stand the blatant lie this man was putting out there. What I saw in this video was an artist that could continuously draw perfectly, never needing to make an adjustment or correction. He claimed he was drawing his self portrait from direct observation using a mirror, although he never stopped drawing or would pause literally for a second to seemingly look in the mirror. Imagine an artist that could draw perfectly, continuously while at same time studying his own image in a mirror. It would be super human. I know what it takes to do this, and it’s a difficult thing to do. I felt he was mocking what we both do. Thank you again for reading this.

    • @CameraLucidaApp
      @CameraLucidaApp  Před 7 měsíci

      I've used Procreate and it's wonderful! But, unless I'm terribly mistaken, Procreate is an app for creating raster graphics. IE, you're creating digital art directly on your device. Camera Lucida is not for drawing art on the screen, but rather for creating non-digital (physical) art such as pencil/graphite/charcoal drawings on paper. Or watercolor. Or pastels, oils, etc. If you want to create digital art, then Procreate is the way to go. If you want to create physical are with traditional materials, then Camera Lucida will fill in where Procreate can't. Oh, and Procreate is much, much better with regards to applying filters, effects, etc. As you can tell, I really like Procreate - it's just not the same kind of tool as Camera Lucida.

      Isle of Mull FPV, you could, but the resulting art would look like it was being seen through a wide angle lens. At the extreme, a fish-eye lens would create a warped final image. While the app can correct for perspective, rotational and linear stretching, I never programmed in the corrections necessary for wide angle/spherical lenses.

      Hi Linda! That's a great question. I tend to not make drawings of family members to be published publicly, but the process of using your own photos is super simple. You have the choice of selecting any image that's on your device, or even taking a photo from directly within the app using the camera. The just-released 10.1 version also lets you download images from any of your favorite cloud-based platforms such as Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, DropBox, Snapseed and more. So really, any photo that you have access to can be used. If I've taken a photo with another camera or something, I usually just end up emailing it to myself and then opening the email and saving it to my camera roll that way. Hope that helps!
