Actually we should just have a video review system which would stop these dumb arguments. If the call came even a fraction before the ball touched the racket replay the point. If it didn't, award the point
Tiafoe had no chance to return that ball. Now he lost the point, his temper, the match and even more than that.
He made contact and call was before/during contact. Correct call would be to replay point regardless if he could make return or not.
That's not how it works. The called has been made before he made any contact with the ball. Should have been replay

Call came as he hit the ball. Very obvious to replay the point, even if it is unfortunate for the other player.

Tiafoe was not returning that ball anyway. He was just mad because he was struggling against a lower ranked player. Tiafoe tried to win the point using the rules in his favor. What a small move, he’ll never be a great champion.
@@wyatthunter987 Dude whatever happens whether he would made a return or not is secondary. However the ball was called out before he made contact with it therefore from what i have seen/watched the last few years, this should have been a replay. Always do.

@@LordOfTheDrinks01 You don't know what deceleration or anything was caused by call coming before he made a move to return the ball. You're looking at the resulting stroke and ball and making a post-hoc rationalization that he wouldn't have made the return. The call is before the play.

In this situation, giving the point to Griekspoor was the right call, even if there were previous points that were called differently prior

This is tough, because the rules give the umpire the freedom to award the point in favor of the server if, in their opinion, the ball was unreturnable. Two factors though are to be considered, did the player reach the ball, and did the out call effect the player reaching the ball. In this case I think the argument could be made it was unreturnable, and the call did not affect Tiafoe. However iv seen this type of call go to a point replay plenty of times, so it’s s grey area, probably best to replay since he touched it and the call was prior to contact.

Yeah, but he (the umpire) couldn't possibly have been that confident. It happened too quickly to know for sure...It wouldn't have changed the outcome, but the point should have been replayed.

Sound is slow, compare to light. So we have a delay between them on captations, the sound comes always slightly late after the image.
I watched it in slow mo and the call actually started as soon as the ball hit, so a fraction of a second before he hit it. The out called continued until after he made contact. I think technically it should've been a replay as it was not an unreturnable serve. That being said, there's absolutely no excuse for that sort of behavior. None whatsoever.
@@jm7804 agreed. Tiafoe was _way_ out of line. The umpire less so, but still out of line. As I stated before, there's no way the umpire could/should have been _that_ confident in his call. The point should have been replayed.
Tiafoe shouldn’t have lost his temper but he’s in the right here. The call came before he had hit the ball and he can say, and was saying, that it indeed affected his return thereby asking for a replay. The umpire erred here and at best it was a Grey area where the umpire could’ve awarded the point. 9/10 umpires in this situation would’ve asked for a replay.

The Umpire is right here! There's no way Tiafoe would've gotten back that first serve so it's Griekspoor's point! The rules are you've to put the ball back in play if there's a wrong ''call'' which he clearly didn't do. If the serve was out Griekspoor would've lost a challenge so it's only fair that Tiafoe should lose the point if it's in!
Not if the call comes before the player hits the return, which it did. It was close but they should have replayed the point.

It's a quite simple rule and the only logical way to get rid of this kind of "blablabla, I could have gotten the ball back" Andersen BS that Tiafoe is pulling as an excuse.

This is incorrect because the call was made before/as he made contact with the ball. And by the rules, that's hinderance. The point gets replayed. It doesn't matter if the umpire thought he could get the ball back or not if he was able to get a racket on the ball due to the hinderance call.
The rule regarding this situation:
Whenever there is a corrected call either by overrule, correction
by a Line Umpire or otherwise, the Chair Umpire in his sole judgment must deter-
mine if either player was hindered, and if so, order a “Let” to be played.
a) If a call is corrected from “Good Ball” to “Out,” then the point is ended and
there is no hindrance.
b) If the call is corrected from “Out” to “Good Ball,” then there must be a “Let”
played unless it was a clear ace or a clear winning shot that the player could
not possibly have retrieved. If there is any reasonable possibility that such a
ball could have been played, then the player who would have lost the point
must be given the benefit of the doubt.

It's clear that Tiafo reaction to the ball affected by the umpire decision.
It doesn’t even matter if the umpire was wrong or not, Tiafoe still had a chance to score some more points. But it was match point there, and his temper didn’t just lose an average point, it lost his team and his country the whole match. What a selfish thing to do in such a situation! And I know what it’s like (well, at least a version of it). I’ve played tournaments before where it was a team situation and where you have to be careful when tensions get high. Luckily I’ve never encountered such a situation like this before, but you’re always conscious that every decision you make and every point you win or lose means something for your team. You have to be conscious of it, because other people are relying on you. And whether you’re a professional like him or a club player like me, it really doesn’t matter, the mindset remains the same. He obviously cared more about some dumb point than his team🤷🏻♂️
This is not about Tiafoe. This is about the umpire who made a mistake with this decision. Ball was called out before he made any contact with the ball then it should have been replay. No matter if he can make the return or not it is still a not good decision by the umpire. Tiafoe's action doesn't help either.

@@prometheus5700 Dude i already said it this is not about Tiafoe. The action after that decision of course is not good. But we are talking about a disgraceful decision by the umpire that destroyed any mentality within a second because of his poor decision. We can criticised Tiafoe's action later.
In the moment, many players have lost composure. I've seen some wild Davis Cup matches and the chair umpires have made bad calls. We'll see it happen again.

I, however, am talking about Tiafoe, and I think it’s important that people recognize his actions as the most important bit of this video. The umpire can do whatever they want as they have that power and whether their decisions are stupid or intelligent, when you have a team and a country relying on you, there is no excuse to act as he did and throw away the match.
Line judges aren't needed anymore, stop using them and these problems will vanish!!

It's funny because there was a smirk on that umpires' face over why the point should be replayed. Someone must have felt powerful for once after being trampled over so many times. It's a gray area on whether to replay the point or not. I think it should have been an automatic replay point if it's being called before the hit, no judgment calls to decide afterwards
