- Norfolk Southern Train Stops Across A Busy Street In 2 States! Big Train With Union Pacific Railroad DPU & Plenty Of Horn. 3 Trains At The State Line In Bristol, Tennessee & Bristol, Virginia. An Historic Train Station and railroad yard revisited. There is also a red caboose at the railroad yard that is still used on local switcher trains.
After I filmed the CSX Santa Train I spent the night in Tennessee so that I could film some Norfolk Southern trains the next day. It took most of the day but I got 3 trains to pass the station at the state line. I could film each train from either state which was kind of cool. After I filmed the trains I stopped by Hobo Shoestrings home to visit him and his friend Troy who has a big channel on TikTok.
The first train was a mixed freight train with 3 locomotives including a Union Pacific locomotive shoving the rear of the train. I felt pretty lucky to catch it until it stopped over the railroad crossing and sat for a couple of hours. Cars had to turn around and go a different direction which I learned is actually normal here. The train was 14Z and where it stopped there was a long cut of interesting boxcars. This is a popular Railfan hangout and I got to meet a group of local fans.
About an hour after that train finally cleared the road another eastbound train showed up. This one was a heavy loaded grain train. Listen to the rail groan as it passes by. After it passed we walked over to the train station to have a close look. A local switcher was working in the yard and getting ready to take the caboose on a run to a cement plant. I would have followed that train if I didn't have plans to visit Mark and Troy.
Right before the last train is seen we take a look at a tourist attraction. This circle is for people to take selfie pictures with the Bristol sign in the background. The last train that we see is a westbound intermodal train. This was a pretty good train and had 3 locomotives that gave plenty of horn. There is also a short scene at the end where I stopped at Shoestrings home. I was here last year also and made some videos from inside his place so make sure to see those videos also!
Filmed Sunday, November 19, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

VA side here lol
I love the steel lattice work.above the street.
Thanks Jaw Tooth, awesome video especially getting to see Mark(Hobo String). Over the last few years of watching your videos, you links underneath to other Railfans has opened the door to new friendships, which I really appreciate, Thank you so very much for giving a retired Pastor, the joy of his childhood: Trains, ever since I was 6 years old and I am now 72 yrs old. Thanks again Jaw Tooth.
That is awesome! Glad to help and thanks for watching my videos!
You are most welcome.@@JawTooth
I bet the locals hate this crossing. Thanks for sharing & the morning train fix 🚂👍👍
Thanks for watching!
we avoid it. there's a bridge that goes over it and a tunnel under it about a quarter mile of either side
It's amazing how blue the sky's are in the Blueridge Mountains. You picked a great time of year to be here!
What a gorgeous station! They built that when beauty and architecture were important to builders. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Good rainy day to watch your video.Stay Dry.
If I were waiting an hour on a stopped train I'd break out a lawn chair and a beer! The EOT DPU was a nice bonus though. Better turners than runners. Great video, like it a lot. Thanks JT!
A fair day's worth of rail fanning JT,good to see you catching with up our favorite hobo, shoestring.
You got that right!
What a beautiful place to film JT! I liked the intermodal the best, but all the trains were cool. Thanks 👍 for sharing with us. Great video today! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much!
Wow! Great catch, Brian, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Man, that DPU was working hard! I love the state jumping 🤣 You caught some heavy trains today, nicely done!
Thanks 👍
Hey there JT!...I like how you don't mind traveling a bit to show us some cool places. Most railfan guys just shoot the same old locations, but you really do for variety. Awesome!
We have seen one train in two states at the same moment! Thank You Jawtooth! ❤
Great to see both parts of Virginia and Tennessee especially on the
tracks here going from one state to another at the same time here
and it is very nice here, but I didn't expect it to block the tracks in
two different states but it was great that you filmed it, it was also
great to see Norfie making an appearance but it was also really
great to see a special guest appearance by Shoestring himself
this was really awesome Thank You Jaw Tooth take care.

Hi JT, Love this crossing how cool is that ! Tenessee & Virginia. Awesome trains & Hobo Shoestring too. Beat that everyone! ❤😊👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
The sound of the DPU is perfect. 😀
Was awesome as I saw this one twice. Thanks so much. ❤😊
What's the rush they just gotta stop to get let into the yard anyway🤣😂 awesome video Brian stay well roll on
Passed thru there (lost) in 2016 briefly! Beautiful mountain scenery!
I like that area also
I enjoy my favorite NS trains. Some long trains here.❤😊I have always loved watching a train stop then start again. I hear some squealing sounds on tracks. Must be heavy loads. You have good patience waiting for trains.😊Thanks again Loved this!❤😊
Thank you very much!
Finally, a place I can say I have been before! I stopped here for an hour while I was in the area for the NASCAR Bristol Night Race and love the scene of this depot on the state line. I found some great photo spots a bit south of here but no trains when I was through. Great catches JT! Cheers from Milwaukee, Wisconsin!
Really enjoyed this video, JT. I live an hour or so from here and rode a night passenger train out of here back in the 60's to Baltimore. I'll look up the Santa train video. I have a friend who rides it a lot. Thanks. For coming to this area. BTW, my wife's dad worked for the old Interstate RR, and her late b-i-l retired from NS RR.
The cat is definitely the star of the show!!!
Hello from Hamilton, NI, NZ, safe trip home to Ohio, thanks for the meet at the State line @ Tennessee & Virginia 😊❤
Hello there!
D-P-U-I-C-U. Good to see Shoestring about to catch out! Gread video Jaw!
Thanks for watching!
Neat that you are able to stand in two states at the same time! I had the privilege, many years ago, of standing in THREE COUNTRIES at the same time: Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands at a place called "Drei Ecke Punkt" (3 corners point) just outside the village of Roetgen, which was the home of my ancestors!
Oh wow! I had no idea that such a place existed. That would be cool if a railroad went through there lol
Another grand video from JT!
Great fun, thanks very much!
Awesome video with a dpu working hard but wait there’s more 👍😎🇺🇸🚂👍
Thanks 👍
A town that looks like it has a lot of the Heritage left. A train seems to pass during a NASCAR race and the camera will focus on it when it goes by and somewhere on that stretch the track is actually been relocated a bit to accommodate the viewing stands. There was also mention of this city that much of the Carter music family would gather here for recording trips. Perhaps they left from that fine Depot and if you look at the grade crossing sign you'll note the sign that the great Crossing is maintained by NS somewhat along the line of that bridge in Kentucky. With a sign that's just about as famous as Reno it's hard to make a decision where to go. Plus the sight of Hobo Shoestring preparing for a crew change. So choose a train from the schedule by the depot and watch all the good trains come to you. Too bad JT wasn't there for that action
Something new and three great trains. ❤
Thank you very much!
Here I am again: thanks for a very nice and interesting video. We really enjoyed it, Jaw Tooth.
Very nice video, another fantastic video, super like!
hello jaw & it's is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks jaw friends randy
JawTooth
Another AWESOME video
Seems you never get tired
Standing there so long
Thanks again!
Maybe it’s a possible crew change spot why both trains stopped. In some states train companies can be fined for blocking streets too long. Another great video son!
Thanks for watching!
Top 'o' the mornin' one and all. TGIF.. Take us away Brian!
Good morning
Morning!
Hi there
Oh no, a cameo appearance by hobo Shoestring himself, in person. Seems to me I also saw a familiar mug recently on Strings video. 😎
Lol, yup!
That was a lot of grain! I'd love to see the rest of the town, if it's anything like the train station. 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Good Morning Everyone!
Good morning
Hello everyone!
You were only about 50 miles from me, JT!!! Had I known, we would have come and taken you to lunch and showed you some of the back area's you may not get to. I really enjoyed this video. GREAT train action and love the EMD rumbles!! Thanks for the many miles you travel to keep the video's interesting and show us a wide variety of the area. Until next time!!!
Sounds great! Maybe I will see you there next year when I chase the Santa train again
Hey jaw tooth cool trains. The FRA would be very upset with trains blocking crossing. They can only be stopped no more than 5 minutes on crossing. After 5 minutes they must start moving. They could be fined for blocking crossing. Have a great railroad day 🚂🙋♀️
Always great 👍 videos thanks again for the traveling you do and the history of diffent towns amazing hope you and the family have a wonderful Christmas 🎄 and new year and to all the rail fans hope to see the radar check soon on some fast trains !!
Thanks, you too!
I never knew that about Bristol. I just have known it for Nascar races. That is awesome.
Merci beaucoup pour cette très belle vidéo et très bon week-end !🖐🖐✨
7:00 Should be a sign posted saying, "DO NOT STOP ON ROAD".
😅😅😅😅😅
Great video Jawtooth. Those railroad ties sure sounded like doors squeaking in an haunted house!
Yes they do
I love your videos Jaw Tooth. You would have loved my awful day (awful for me anyway). I expedited a delivery from Amtrak in New Haven, CT to the Amtrack maintenance facility in Wash DC where I got in impromptu tour trying to find someone to unload my van.
I used to see that sign everyday I used to live in Bristol Tennessee
JT there most probably doing crew change there and taking on fuel for the locomotives. That’s why they’re sitting there so long but anyway another great video my friend.
Thanks for the info
Great 👍 👌 shot of the train and the signs
Thanks!
@@JawTooth no problem
Brian, If you did a screen grab exactly @8.51 and flipped it. You would be able to read the BRISTOL sign. ALSO the locomotive number 8448 would not change. LOL.
What a beautiful train station, I wish that you went inside, providing it was open. Other than that, another great train 🚆 video from you, Brian. 😊
Thanks for watching
This is just like Galesburg, Illinois, in that one of the main streets is always blocked by trains working a yard.
Appreciate the new locations. Coolstation!
Thanks for watching!
Once in a blue we get CSX trains stopped and block several cross streets, fortunately you can circumvent that easily here. Thanks, Jaw Tooth.
nice shot of your truck with the big blue box car in the back ground
Lol, thanks
Such great work, Brian. Thanks from KCMO.
Much appreciated!
Bristol has a similarity with Sharon - some in Ohio, some in Pennsylvania.
Not much rail activity in that area though - at least not as far as I know.
Jaw Tooth, have you ever gone to Erie, PA? There's some rail activity there if you get lucky - I rarely have the chance to get there any more but it had been quite an active spot at one time.
Your offer for me to treat you to a lunch still stands if you ever get into Venango County, Pennsylvania.
Great videos, Sir!!
May God always protect and bless you.
Have a good weekend 🙂
All the times I've been to Bristol, and I've never been by the train station.
Foreign power dpu! And man, you took a bit of a hike to get to Bristol!
That was a good drive but nothing compared to when I went to Utah and Wyoming to film Big Boy
Your a lucky man. Thanks for the video....TN had no state income tax.
Thanks for watching!
Merry X-mas Jaw Tooth and family...I hope you have a X--mas video on that day..I will be alone on X-mas and to have a video to watch as I eat my X-mas dinner would be awesome...
*@davesargenti6641*
Why do you say, "X-Mas" instead of Christmas?
And what was the point in mentioning "X-Mas" several times?
🤨
Tony, an old school guy
Nice video man! I go to college kind of near there, up in Blacksburg on the Christiansburg District, so those are some pretty familiar trains
Very cool! You have some great train watching areas. I went to Morehead State and after I graduated they took out the railroad
@@JawTooth I see, very interesting! If you want to swing by the Christiansburg area, NS has two districts up here, the Christiansburg and Whitethorne, both have some pretty stunning locations
You had a good railfanning day at Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia, Jaw Tooth! Norfolk Southern train 14Z is a daily trail from Sevier Yard in Knoxville, Tennessee to Allentown, Pennsylvania. On its way between the two terminals the train works the yards in Roanoke and Shenandoah, Virginia. Is Bristol, Virginia a crew change point? That would explain why the eastbound trains block that crossing. However, blocking the crossing for almost two hours is a long time for a crew change. At least the cars that turn around when the gates go down do not have to go out of their way to get around the blocked railroad crossing. I noticed that there is a bridge over the railroad tracks about two blocks east of the train station. The westbound double stack train also stopped across from the yard office. Did they change crews?
You had a personal 2fer 😮 left leg in Tennessee and right leg in Virginia 😅
I counted onehundred and twenty five cars on that west bound train , unbelievable…
Loved all the k5las
Once again, I wonder how emergency crews (fire, ambulance, police) cope with streets being blocked by a non-moving train when rushing to the scene of an emergency? I understand the ancient of days economics of tracks laid right through the heart of a city, but I note how many Canadian Via Rail stations now are situated outside of smaller cities (Saskatoon and Kingston come to mind right away!) and that keep urban routes open for emergency vehicles to make their way to at-risk situations.
I bet those people hated to wait on that train since they are always in hurry lol.
The reason for the delays is Bristol is where the crew changes. Shoestring lives 15 miles down the road in Johnson City and he often catches rides at this very location. You should have stopped to see Shoestring JT!
I was at both locations this year and last year. Last year Shoestring and I waited 4 hours at Bristol and nothing was moving. I got lucky this year
Awesome catches Brian!
I'm surprised to see the UP power so far south. 😊😊
Man listen to those tracks moan and groan
It's nice to see an EMD locomotive instead of GE all the time
Excellent two states video looks to be a great spot to video great video thanks Brian
Jaw tooth, Bristol local here buddy! Try Delta Blue BBQ on state st while ya there buddy! Love the videos
Looks as if the stack train came down from Canada; the containers aren't the usual ones one sees on the US domestic routes.
Driving close to Shoestring home base!
Very nice Video!
🍀🎉🇮🇳🎉🍀
Thank you! Cheers!
Great footage Jawtooth from Bristol, I've filmed on that line known as A-line, Bristol line,Crescent Corridor and Pulaski District around were I film in Christiansburg VA were it junctions with the line to Bluefield WVA around Radford VA at a place called Walton, I've only filmed as far West as Abbington VA were track speed is about 50 or more, nice to see Shoestring!🛤🚂
ANOTHER EXCELLENT VID JT!
'Yaun spare NO EXPENSE gettin us those good ones!
Good morning Jaw Tooth.
Good morning!
Boa tarde 🎅🎄
I had a CSX entering South Buffalo Yard stop across the crossing for hours, blocking a major crossing for I don't remember how long. I think they were going to be blocking for 6 hours until they got complaint after complaint and then I think it cleared in 3 hours, can't remember it was a while ago.
Ayeee I was there! It was a good time railfanning with ya jawtooth come back and visit!
Yeah! That was a good day. Got lucky with the weather and the trains. I just watched your Santa Train shorts video from Kingsport. I will probably be back down there next year
@@JawTooth I’ll be there!
RR crossing lights doing the “Bristol Stomp”.
Thanks for watching!
Nice Video
Nicely done
Thanks!
Welcome back
I enjoyed that video👍👍
There's a bridge over the Missouri River where you can stand in Nebraska and Iowa at the same time.
Awesome!
Thank You for sharing your video. Was there many year’s ago 🚂

Thanks Lashenda!
I 24 In Tennessee passes thru Alabama back into Tennessee then Alabama for about 30 miles, so your in 1 state, then another then back in Tn. again.
Did you know that Bristol Virginia and Tennessee there all that open space between the trains and up there with a sign is that used to be a a railroad yard has turntable roundhouse Colin Tower water tower everything they would have needed to have service to steam engine back in the old day's.
