      Now, why did NS take two dash 9s, and turn them into giant triclops cowl units, instead of just repainting the existing locomotives in a designated mow scheme, which has been done countless times in the past.

    Hello from the UK, where I have just discovered this channel. I have watched CZcams American Railways videos since our lockdown. I used to think that we all spoke the same language, but there are huge differences in terminology between American and British, points/switches, sleepers/ties, yard master/signalman, driver/engineer, guard/conductor and so on. I love your term "anti-graffiti" and I think that it deserves a place in the English Oxford Dictionary! I will look out for some more of your videos.

      Jeremy, yes indeed! I’m trying to recall who was the American military man who made a funny ironic comment during WWII about how confused they got communicating with each other because their common language was not very common.
      I learned that while serving in the US Army in Vietnam in 1968. I was a heavy truck driver who was temporarily assigned to an Australian Army combat engineer unit. I had a lot of trouble understanding their lingo & slang over the loud noise of the turbo charged engine of the truck. It was crazy!
      My favorite RR term difference is driver/engineer. In US RR terms a driver is the wheel that applies the power to the rail to move the train. Engineer is the skilled person who controls that power to the drivers to move the train. OK?
      When I was discharged from the Army in 1969 I went back to my RR job as trainman on the Santa Fe Railway. Later, 1992, I joined the volunteer group working on the Santa Fe 3751, 4-8-4 steam loco. In 1999 we ran the 3751 from LA, CA to Sacramento for Railfair ‘99 For a 10 day assignment with 20+ other steam locos of active display of US steam power, steamed up. Since I was a conductor on the ATSF Ry (& Railfan) it was easy for me to work as a docent on the 3751 while we were at the California Rail Museum. One of those days a bus load of British Rail employees showed up. One Brit who had worked as an engine driver asked me if I drove the engine. A bit confused I sensed a joke coming into my head. So I smiled and told him it was a multiple answer. 1st part was “No, I’m a conductor so I don’t drive the engine.”
      2nd part “In England they drive trains, but in the US we Run ‘em.”3rd part, “So no, I don’t run the engine.”
      He laughed at my joke and understood. We proceeded to have an excellent exchange of RR information.

    It does suck that Warbonnets are going to be used until they break, however like you said more opportunities to see more for years to come. Unlike here where Union Pacific are mostly rebuilding their older units. The Ex SP patch units are becoming more rarer and rarer to catch. As of this comment, only 3 Ex SP patch AC44’s roam the rails. 6236, 6318 and 6378 are the last Ex SP units being used and not on a deadline with their original colors. The other 2 reside in Vernon, CA as 6310 and 6379. I hope at least 1 Ex SP AC44 gets preserved even if it needs to be repainted back into it’s SP colors. And also i learned something new today as I didn’t know CN was leasing BCRail for that long!
    Edit: UP 6310 is being repaired at the moment and will be back on the rails very soon. Same with 6379, be patient with it. UP 1989 is now on the rails. And is currently in Marion, AR.
    Edit 2: UP 6379 is back on the rails while UP 6310 is stored. UP 1989 is back on the rails and UP 1996 is out for awhile after it’s motor took a crap.

      I see patched bloody noses, warbonnetts, bluebonnets, BN execs aka vomitbonnetts, and countless rare down to single digit loco models going through Houston/port of Houston every week. Wish a channel covered it they’d have months worth of content filming one day down there.

      I was lucky enough to catch 6318 In tucson on the 4th of July this year. It's sad to see them go since most had very short service runs with SP.

      I see a lot of rebuilt UP dash 9s. I actually love that they repaint them in the old 90s paint scheme, specifically with that font and letter spacing

      There will be plenty of old SP units out there for years to come. The world will run out of sand before UP can remove the gunk off the old SP units.

    Absolutely loved this video! 13:10 , there is more than the death stars , up in Proctor Minnesota there are a few IC SD40-2’s that are usually very active on the iron range . Along with many other fallen flags

    My favorite yard. If you visit I highly recommend The Packing House Dining Company on Mulberry St. across from the Railroad Museum and Amtrak Station.

    I used to live up in the Illinois central/CN area and have seen that IC sw switcher moving freight when I was younger. Another fallen flag which got eaten by the CN was the EJ&E. I used to see those orange locos ALL THE TIME growing up

    4:05 Yeah it’s a pretty sad reality and future for the remaining ex ATSF Warbonnets, I hope at least one gets preserved. I also hate the fact someone graffitied the side on one of these units. I hate it just as much when it’s done to a perfectly good looking H2 GEVO.
    I’ve heard there might be 2 BNSF C40-8Ws that could be saved for preservation, but right now I don’t know if that’s true or not. But if it is, I hope they meet the same fate as 537.
    Also happy to see 1755 once again, it’s appeared quite a bit on here. That font on the side looks great.
    I’d also love to see those new NS MOW units, one of the most unique looking machines out there. Closest I’ve gotten was seeing a Ballast Cleaner in action. Well done getting the golden swoosh by the way!

    That is insane. I’ve been to Chicago numerous times, but never thought to pay a visit to Galesburg. Looks like they have all kinds of neat and rare power in those storage tracks and yards. Thanks for the great videos SPR! Keep it up! 😁😎👍

      Well it’s SF history. I wish BNSF would do a few full heritage paint liverys. Not just the 25th anniversary orange one. It would be neat to see and (run) a brand new war bonnet or even a Green one

    Great video, nice rare finds there. That Ex-CSX Dash 8 with the C&O sticker was sold to the Indiana & Ohio and has been repainted, it no longer has that sticker and its in G&W paint now

    Something is telling me none of the warbonnets, blue, and yellow bonnets, 7695, or macs will make it to preservation, but I could be wrong. I just feel like we're going to lose lots of iconic classes to scrapping.

    BNSF executive MACs (ex-BN) will most likely company the Warbonnets. Sad to see these things won't be on coal trains or high priority intermodals. Many MACs and Warbonnets have been scrapped in Birmingham, Alabama. Sad that 9647 no longer wears the "Vomitbonnet".

    You know what? The golden swoosh is a cool stand out and unique loco that should keep its livery, but I'm glad it didn't become the norm. When you get the shot of the tailing loco rolling off into the sunset, it's cool to see the black logo with the golden outline of the lettering. It's not as gorgeous as the Superfleet livery, the executive mac livery or the original Santa Fe warbonnets that were used in passenger services but it's an improvement over the previous BNSF orange liveries.

    I worked out of this yard as a road conductor after the BN take over. We combined freight pools. Before merger I spent most of my career on the ATSF working out of Joliet, Chillicothe and Ft. Madison.
    Yes it could get complicated. But as a teenage mutant Railfan in the 1960 era I started studying the yard. One of my favorite yards. Thanks for sharing.
    BTW there is no “noise” in Illinois. The last part is silent in the French word for the Native American tribe Illini.🤔🤓

    Those “Bloomer” locomotives were cool as they look VERY much like the old Burlington “Chinese Red” locomotives. I have never seen those. Cool.

      Yeah, the Bloomer Line has some really cool locos. The RR is a shortline based in Gibson City, IL

      Hey, thank you for the response and info on the “Bloomer” RR. I”ll look them up.
      I looked up the SW10 and non of the ones I saw had the same cab as the one in your video. The one in the video looked like it had the cab from a GP loco. The ones on the net had the typical rounded cab of an SW.

    12:44 there actually is one BCOL "patch" that I have seen and know of, that being 4641, although its in CN paint it has BCOL on the side of the cab, meaning it used to be in BCOL paint I believe, it is also a C44-9CWL

    I once remember when up in the Northern parts of Western Australia where big U.S. type Locomotives are used on Private Lines belonging to Iron Ore Companies and came across something Very similar in BHP markings i think and someone said he thinks it was a Modified Dash 8 if that helps and could be on Web.
    Really Nice Videos as Well.

    I can tell you that the 1755 was "repainted" at some point between July 7th and August 27th of 2023, I have 2 pictures of it, and the first doesn't yet have the new number style.

    The tracks where the locomotives are serviced is called the Service tracks or dsf in galesburg and North of the service track is called the Ready side where the good power sits. I work in Galesburg at the diesel shop, just giving you a little more info didnt know if you knew that. Love your videos keep em up😁😁

      Your welcome @@Southern_Plains_Railfan! Yep, ironically, the train departed from a yard that is owned by NS. BNSF and NS have a joint line from Des Moines to Albia. NS has a small operation in Des Moines if you’re wondering.

    You should maybe check out the Alton Southern hump yard in East St Louis, Illinois. My dad is a yard master there and is quite the operation to see.

    You should check out the Illinois Railnet from Montgomery, IL to Streator, IL. They run sand trains daily and it’s cool to see them.

    I cought the Golden Swoosh unit leading through the feather river canyon about two years ago. I chased her all the way from stockton, that was an amazing chase.

    I think Econorail (ECRX) owns most of the remaining SW-14's. I just saw one (ECRX 1410) at a paper mill in Alabama (along with ECRX 1201, an SW-1200). I used to operate the ECRX 1480 quite some years ago in Houston.

    I think i saw that IC/CN SW1200 type set at the Belt Railway of Chicago about a month ago on one of their short term storage engine tracks. I think that CN number 2304 might look familiar. The stacks were capped with those buckets. Not sure where that double set might have been heading to.

    Crazy thing I guess is seeing the BN Mac’s are still extremely common here in Colorado. Typically see one every 5-10 trains

    IC/CN 1204 is an sw7rm built from an IC sw14 unlike the up units it looks like regardless it’s awesome to see

    The IC SW14 was not used that much as a CN railfan I’ve only seen 2 both DIT I know that they aren’t that reliable so starting in 2007 they where slowly sold oof to BUGX and NREX

    I do catch from time to time IC trains pulling on the main lines. Mostly on the old EJ&E line running through Griffith Indiana.

    14:31 would be interesting to see how these -9 units fare in rotorary snow blower pushers like the old c-30's. they will probably be the new power units for LORAM track maintenance ballast cleaners or rail grinders?

    11:17 7339 made it from Illinois to Massachusetts. 7339 is on B&E land to be turned into orange
