Bougainvillea is an evergreen shrub known for brilliant shows of prolific blooms.
There are varieties with red, pink, orange, yellow, white bracts. The flowers appear in the middle of the bracts or leaves that have changed color. Bougainvillea leaves are oval and are positioned in an alternate pattern. The bark is beige-grey and with age it gets more texture and character.
The species is native to South America. Bougainvilleas are fast growing, tolerate pruning very well and are well suited for most bonsai styles. As they are subtropical plants, they can't endure frost and need temperatures around 50° F - 59° F / 10° C - 15° C in winter.
Bougainvillea needs full sun and high temperatures for producing flowers. In Fall in colder climates, the tree should be placed in a cool room with sufficient light (or under grow lights) and at temperatures not below 50°F / 10° C and best not over 59° F / 15° C.
Bougainvillea prefers a pH value of 6 to 6.5. I use a liquid fertilizer every week during the growing season and every couple of weeks in winter.
For pruning and wiring, cut the shoots after flowering, leaving two leaves on each and prune twigs and branches in autumn or winter. The bougainvillea can bud from old wood after hard pruning. If you want the tree to flower, don't pinch and trim it too much in summer. Those heal over slowly. Wiring is possible on young shoots and twigs but older branches are very stiff and break easily.
Repot smaller bougainvilleas every two or three years. Larger specimens can be repotted every three to five years. A well-draining standard soil mix is fine for this species. The roots of the bougainvillea are yellow, thin and delicate. Take good care not to tear off the roots when you remove the root ball from the pot! Untangle the roots tenderly and don't use the root rake with force. Root pruning is tolerated well.

Some good hard pruning. They look better for it and will love the extra space they now have
I think they’re really happy with it. Most have started to push a lot of new leaves. I have them on a bottom shelf near a sliding door and the temp stays around 60F. They seem to be loving that too.
Nice work
Great to see your trees growing well. The bougainvilleas are coming along nicely 👍
Thanks J! I’m seeing a lot of new buds so this should be a good restart for them.
Wow hard pruning friend!!! Like 👍
Thank you! Quite a set back for them but I think it will be worth it in the long run.
Great job on those Bougies bro looking good ! Great video! 👌👍
Thanks 👍 They are already starting to bush out after this hard pruning. Should be a good Summer for them.
Looks nice but I would have left them to grow in the deeper pot for another few years to get a thicker trunk faster. 😃
Very beautiful bonsai
Thanks! Cheers!
hell yeah bro I dig how that one came out, well all of em but the one u worked on is pretty cool , the cascade one is sick too
I hella like bougainvillea I need me some more asap! I'd like a white one or yellow one
They’re back budding really nicely after that. Pretty much starting over but I think it will be worth it. I would love to get a white one too. I passed up an orange one on clearance at the end of last year and am kicking myself.
@@HerbandRoots niceee yeah they usually do good bitch hard pruning but I've only had some for over a year so alot to learn about them still, and ahh yah I have the orange/pink one I got a bright purple one too so just want those oh and a red one!

trimakasih seringnya sangat bermempaat sekali
trimakasih seringnya sangat bermempaat sekali!
U should do a plant tour!
Great Idea! I might wait till Summer to do the outdoor stuff too!
It is the fall/winter temp requirement that I can’t deal with. I live in zone 5 so my plants need to be hardy to this zone (in my shed) or tolerate wintering in my living room. I don’t have Chinese elms for this reason…
where do you buy the bougainvillea bonsai? the one here are hanging or in big pots
What happened to the azalea bonsai you made
I actually decided to try to air layer the large branch this Spring. That is currently in progress. I will make an update on that soon.
