    Thank you so much. Every other "how I got into ______" video says how they got a 1550+ on the SAT and a 4.5 gpa. It was really reassuring to hear that it's still possible to be accepted without having insane grades!

    Dan, this is very insightful and I totally agree with you. I am one of the scholars here at Duke and I must say that there is a wide spectrum of students; however, it is important to remember that even if someone gets into a college they might not want to go. I have had so many friends who have had their dreams and aspirations destroyed because they just couldn't tolerate how much they had to do (I'm premed). Thus, I say go to a school that suits you and your personality, habits, etc. id rather go into a lower tier school and succeed there than go to an upper tier school and be defeated. Just some thoughts my man

    So I’m in my freshman year at M.I.T and I definitely will say that a big part of getting into a good college are the extracurriculars. Your GPA and SAT scores do matter for sure. However, you can get a perfect GPA and SAT score and still not get in if you’ve got no extracurriculars. Schools love to see that!

      tonic INC. sorry what do you mean? If you’re asking what you should do for extracurriculars, then that’s easy. Do what interests YOU and also benefits and contributes to the community. For example, for some extracurriculars, I played on my school’s basketball team, I was in orchestra, did a bunch of coding classes and even tutored students who needed help in things like math. I also started some clubs and organizations, one organization that was created to save endangered animals and animals experiencing abuse or neglect. A club could be a litter cleaning club or anything that helps the community and shows that you’re a good person.

    Good evening!
    I just watched your video since last year. You did a great job with your video. Congratulations on your achievements. Including with your extracurriculars. I will be completing with my AA degree from a community college this year in December. After I complete with my AA degree in general studies, I will be taking my semester off from university to do acting and music studio for receiving training that relates to television. Then, I will be back to university for my BA degree in journalism or communication in the fall of 2023. I graduated from high school in 6 years ago. I am a military child, so I traveled all over the states because I have a parent who is military. Television has always been my dream career at a younger age. I am working on my own book for right now. I have worked on it for 2 years during the pandemic. Everyone has their own pace. I have been a part time student from a community college for 6.5 years of working for my AA degree. Again, I really enjoyed your video because you have great contents. Best of luck at everything you do. My name is Andres by the way. It is pleasure to meet you. I am bilingual. I am Hispanic because my family are from Colombia and Puerto Rico. I was born in the western of New York. I lived there for 5.5 years. If you want to know which states that I lived in before, my book will be ready to finish sometime next year. God bless you and your family. 🙏

    Chances of me going into Duke
    *1%*
    I’m in 8th Grade
    Positive Facts about me: Straight A’s occasionally one B.
    A student who doesn’t focus on having fun too much
    Playing Golf lessons during Saturday
    Negative Facts about me: Few grammar mistakes.
    Don’t read a lot of books.
    Only read comic books
    Time ran out and didn’t answer a lot of questions during my PSAT 8th grade.
    Possible (Don’t know what GPA) - I’m only between a GPA of 3.0 - 4.0
    I mess up some classes even when I tried my best
    Play games too much (6 hours a day)
    Sometimes forget to charge my chrome book (I charge my chrome book most of the time)
    Not in honors class (even though I wish)
    Mess up in mathematical problems (Most of the time I don’t mess up but when it comes to simplifying)
    I don’t play football nor basketball.
    I make mistake easily
    When someone asks me a question I don’t know, I don’t know what to say.
    I talk weird when I don’t know what to say.
    Shy
    Embarrassed of doing something special
    Gets irritated when someone annoys me.
    Even though I’m not capable of going to duke is there any good colleges that will accept me even though, I make mistakes?

      During the summer between my junior and senior year, I was looking for some extracurricular thing to get involved in for the upcoming school year, and ran across my local congresswoman's website. I think most (if not all) members of congress have internship programs in both the summer and school year that are open for high schoolers and are reasonably easy to get into.

    Hey Dan I'm a student from Latin America. What do you think my probabilities of getting in are if I didn't take AP or IB ( because my school don't offer neither) classes? I feel that I shouldn't even try to apply.

    • @dangarcia9912
      @dangarcia9912  Před 5 lety +1

      If your school doesn't offer AP/IB's, you cannot be penalized for not taking them (since you couldn't have no matter how hard you tried). Therefore, you'll probably be judged more on how rigorous your academics were compared to your peers. I sincerely do not believe that your chances will decrease arising from a situation you could not control. Hope this helps!

    I’m in 7th grade, but Duke is my dream school so if anyone could tell me what I could do to improve my chances of getting in:
    Good things about me:
    -A+ student (lowest grade right now is 95)
    -1 preAP class, one math class one year ahead (testing into geometry next year instead of algebra)
    -I play sports
    -I started community service
    -I take Spanish class (taking it throughout high school and doing AP once it’s possible)
    -I’m a good test taker
    -I’m doing 2.00 credits worth of classes my 8th grade year
    Negative things:
    -I tend to compare myself to others
    -sometimes I procrastinate
    I know I have a while, but am I on the right track? I feel like everyone’s smarter than me

    So I am a sophomore at my high school and I was concerned about my GPA situation. As a freshmen I kinda messed up and ended with a 4.0 (weighted). This year first semester I am gonna be getting a 4.6. I was just concerned about how much I can bring my GPA up. My goal is a 4.5. Any advice?

    • @dangarcia9912
      @dangarcia9912  Před 5 lety +1

      Your question is pretty broad, basically you're asking how to raise your GPA, which is a question that every student would like to know I would suppose. There are so many pieces of advice I could give you and others could as well, but if I really had to give a piece of perhaps uncommon advice, I'd say to only commit as much of your time and energy into classes as you have to. Know what classes are your easy ones so you can best commit your time to the classes that challenge you the most.

      @dangarcia9912  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for your question! Actually, I do have a roommate (we're not that close tho), and I decided to film this video when he was in class so there wouldn't be any unexpected roommate cameos. At least for Duke, however, you can put down on the housing application that you would "prefer" a single, but that is still not a guarantee.

    • @dangarcia9912
      @dangarcia9912  Před 5 lety +8

      I'll be honest with you, I have no idea what "packing on yourself" means, but I feel like you took my message the wrong way. Something I see pretty often within the "applying to college" community are applicants who set the bar wayyy too high on themselves thinking that you have to be insanely smart/accomplished to get into a college that they want, which is not at all the case. I wanted to show what I did do in high school: what I was, but also what I wasn't.
