- Author R. Scott Bakker addresses criticisms that his books play into misogynist stereotypes. “The waif, the harlot and the harridan.” “Depiction does not equal endorsement” - Using fantasy to critique brutal patriarchal cultures.

As a woman and a huge fan of the PoN series, I'm grateful for his portrayal of how women are treated in roughly-medieval circumstances - and still writing female characters of incredible strength and intelligence despite the adversity.
We agree. Sanitizing our history is not conducive to building a better future and fantasy is a great forum to critique human nature - humanity evolved in "fantasy" worlds.
I always considered women characters in storytelling more engaging by default, because you already have them in disadvantage in many ways, so figuring out the ways they can suceed despite those is really satisfying
First of all I have to express how jealous I feel of these fine people who attended the event.
Secondly, it pains me to see such a brilliant mind having to express something so obvious. Depiction does not equal endorsement.
Personally I am grateful for the work of R.Scott Bakker because he really made me question constantly the way I think and express myself. To women foremost but in general too. I really believe I was made a more thoughtful and empathetic person.
I really hope these videos are aligned with the steady increase of interest for these books and that they herald something great for the future. There are so many youtube videos for these books nowadays and they are constantly mentioned in media like reddit, facebook etc.
I hope Scott is aware of the increased interest and is inspired to build more new ground for us to be conditioned 😁
Our warmest greetings and gratitude from the small, but growing, fanatic Greek cult of Zaudunyani!
Thank you for these videos
This message is appreciated. Scott has expressed worry over how his books are being received by some. Some use its underlying messages to justify nihilistic activism. I believe, in balance, the positive outweighs the negative. Thank you.
@@thenewsload what distincts Scott's work for the vast majority of the genre is the meta worth of his work and how he makes the reader to challenge himself. Its not classic escapism. It is a work that, If appreciated, it changes the reader. It becomes a filter for your comprehension, perception etc.
Sadly such a work cannot appeal to everyone. No challenging art have existed that was accepted by everyone.
We are grateful for Scott who follows his vision and hope that all the positive feedback and reaction is making his effort a bit more rewarding for himself.
I can only see one women in the room, lol.🙂 I bought the first book when it came out & my biggest problem was waiting for the other books. Fantastic series.
I really hope Bakker comes back to do a few interviews with Booktubers like Philip Chase, would love to see him answer some questions from the fans online to actually see his own answers for some of these complex concepts in his series
I know that Jimmy from the The Fantasy Nuttwork, who has done great The Second Apocalypse content had been looking for a way to do an interview with him
@@andrewhanson405 thats great! I hope he ll manage!
@@andrewhanson405 maybe contacting this channel here could help him. I am pretty sure it is run by Bakker's brother
@@andrewhanson405 Yup I think Jimmy said he tried contacting Bakker for an interview a few months ago too, don't think it went pretty well sadly
I'll pass these requests along for an interview - he's not in a "fantasy" mind set these days but you never know.
This reminds me of that 'Only Requires Hate" troll blogger who started a whole campaign against Bakker back in the day, that ended up actually being a soon to be published SF&F author that used online gheyops in attempts to sabotage anyone she viewed as competition. I wonder if reading Kellhus's storyline played any part in inspiring her mad online long game plans🤣
Lmao, yeah that was fun... but Bakker pretty much picked those fights to prove a point that the extreme left and the extreme right are essentially the same thing.
I remember Kalbear and Sci on the three seas forums and then the ASOIAF boards always going hard for the argument that Bakker was a blatant sexist and that depiction did equal endorsement... I spent years arguing with people about this series. Can't believe that was 20 years ago now.
@@JC-oy3ns Saying Bakker "picked those fights" to make a point about the political poles, and leaving it at that, is a way too general recapping of it all though, that would give no impression of just how big of slimy, scummy, bad faith weenie weasel dillholes RequiresHate, and her crew of spineless male feminist sycophant slayqueens, actually were.
I really cant wait till I get the time to read the books. Only thing I´m afraid of are names. They are little too hard for me to pronounce. Can anyone tell me if thats the issue, or is it something you get used to?
You get used to it, but starting the series, for me, was drinking from a firehose.
@@bradhexumOSM since you persisted i supposse it was worth it
Was this recorded recently?
This was recorded in 2017 - it was available online but not easily accessible.
When is this from?
Hey I was doing the sounds for this record and I believe it was done on December 19, 2019. I recall Scott kept talking about a "big post" he needed to get up when he got home.
This was recorded in 2017. Much of this has been available online but kind'a buried and hard to find. We're going to optimize it as its released so it can be found through searches more easily.
