@@emilyb5557 we’re all learning how to sign. I was at Legoland with my grandson yesterday and he signed to me that he was “finished” for the day. My heart melted and I took him straight home. I find him a fascinating and beautiful little boy, his gentle nature and the way he copes with the world is humbling 😘

Frankly I think there's zero valid excuses for not teaching it to kids as early as possible in the school system (obviously kids with disabilities that impact their ability to learn/use signing should be accommodated appropriately and individually) it's far too valuable and I'm certain a lot more people would live their lives nearly if not entirely mute if this were the norm
@@dorothyronan8220 yall supporting him by learning/teaching sign language is incredible he may not realize how massive of a move that is in society as of now but as he gets older and encounters situations where people have to get translators in order to communicate with him properly he'll start to see how much love went into the decision to learn communication his way

Thank you so much. I have a nonverbal 7 year old who understands so much and used to have about 5 words that weren’t clear, but now only says 1 word ‘mom’ when frustrated. It’s very difficult to find verbal people who were once nonverbal at the typical speaking age to share their stories. I appreciate it so so much. ❤️

I was actually nonverbal myself when I was young, and it was a pain for me and my mom. Thank god I can speak full sentences nowadays. But still, I cannot thank you enough for the knowledge you bless us with, and that my fellow autistic compadre, is commendable.

Thank you will for your courage to share your experiences. My nonverbal autistic daughter is 7 now and we have been through every therapy know to the ASD community. She is smart and can read, meaning she comprehends just fine…and can write and spell anything new you give her. But, no speech yet 😢. All of the things your mom did with you are things we do, using “site words” in day-to-day activities to help with the child’s development. My daughter understands them, just won’t speak them, won’t attempt to. She regressed around 15 months old just when she was saying her first words like “dada, mama”. Haven’t heard dada since 😢😢
That’s apraxia probably. She has a high chance of speaking I thought if she gets good training. Based on a video of a kid on CZcams.
Could be apraxia, where the person can not form the words with the mouth, even though they know what they want to say and can comprehend language
Apraxia
Investigate the child's diet. Remove gluten and dairy for a 3 month period as an experiment. Look for the hidden sources in prepared foods. There are probably whole channels that can assist.
My son have apraxia, he had to learn to make even "a" sound. He didn't start with "mama", just puting the mouth into right shape was hard enough. But gradually he speaks better and now at the age of 7 he's speaking very good.
That's amazing your daughter can write at this age, she can communicate. Motivation is extremely important, my son didn't want to even try to speak, but if he wanted something he needed to ask. Even if he couldn't get the right sound, he had to try enough. At first he was speaking only at the kindergarten and not at all at home, because I wasn't demanding that and he didn't feel the need himself. Now he's the most talkative kid in the class, he's attending local public school with some support,it probably wouldn't be possible if he was non verbal.
Some people never will develop speech, no matter what, but there's always possibility. I've read about nonverbal 17 years old who learned to speak and even finished university, became an educator, so there are a lot of possibilities we don't know yet
hi will just to say thanks as a nanny of asd child for all the informative content not only in yt but also in tiktok I remember one day you have video that you said "AUTISM IS LIKE A WIFI,YOU HAVE GIVE A GOOD REPSEPTION IN ORDER TO HAVE A BETTER CONNECTION" and it's true now I can easily train and teach the asd child that am taking care of he can now wear his clothes little bit alone, eating by himself and go to bathroom when he needs to pee and poop more power and God bless

Don't give up hope! My son has Autism and was also non-verbal, but he started talking by the age of 4. He is now 6 and his speech is constantly progressing. Just continue to talk to your son normally, read to him, sing with him. If you're able, get him into center based ABA therapy, he's at that age where he qualifies for early intervention help. ❤

This gives me so much hope for my baby. These are the same things, me and my son father have been doing with my son since he was born. He is 3 and knows his abc and 123 in spanish and in english. He is finally able to say some words.❤❤❤ Thank you so much for this video. It feels good to know I'm doing something right with my baby for his autism

I understand how hard, and heartbreaking, it can be - my Son was non-verbal until he was almost 5.
The key for us was early intervention, speech therapy, music, reading, art therapy (especially working with clay/play dough, those products had a wonderfully calming effect for my Son, making it easier to transition into concentration-based activities and learning), Lego, and sight prompts (pictures with the descriptive word underneath).
Every child is different, so I obviously can't say what would be the most beneficial for your baby and family, but I really do wish you the best of luck, and I hope any of the suggestions above provide some help.
Oh! And reach out to the online Autism community, too - parenting is difficult, parenting a neurodivergent child can be especially difficult, so please know that you have a community out here, ready to help, or even just to listen when you've had a rough day 😊

I was non-verbal until I was about 5 years old. But I was and still am highly intelligent. Although I couldn't speak, I noticed and learned where my father was driving when we drove to my grandma. He always drove the same route. Then I once tried to do it myself on my little bycicle. But a 4 years old boy at a busy road? That is very frightening! Something could have happened to me. I was taken to the police and I came back home. My father built a fence, so that I could not do that again.
At 5 there are many things that I learned in a very short time!: speaking, writing and reading. I think I already could listen, that is: I could understand spoken language. I learned reading and writing, before I went to school.
I am Dutch. At 8 I learned a few German words, at 11 I learned Russian. My development went extremely fast! I also played organ, although I was a little boy, so that was dificult, until I became taller. I was considered as a gifted child.
Now I am in a situation that I am still gifted, almost 57 years old. But quite a lot of people considers me as developmentally challenged. Especially my employer limits me. He doesn't allow me to develop and I am not allowed to ask things about the organisation where I work.
Outside my work my development doesn't stop. I can still learn things I want, also on the social area. I am no longer socially challenged, can communicate very precisely and I love to make jokes with colleagues and family. I love traveling, either by flying or driving. I can drive everywhere (I have been driving at the right side and at the left side of the road). I speak Dutch, English, Esperanto and German fluently. At a lesser degree I speak Afrikaans, French, Russian and Japanese. I love languages!

I taught my 4 years old autistic son new vocabulary using books and educational video ..and I try my best to name items we see when we ride in the car or go to somewhere new really helpful but needs patience and repetition.

He’s almost 30, born with Down’s Syndrome, used to LOVE his Sesame Street Search n Learn game, and used to have about 350 signs… before our world turned upside down.
We’re slowly becoming more stable, and I hope to work with him again. He had learned mostly because of Thomas the Train and Curious George - still his favorites. I helped George do what my son needed to do, then he would copy his buddy. His PCP didn’t want to add a label on him, and he was sick so much that I finally home schooled him, so school didn’t give him an autism diagnosis either. A heart surgeon was the first to ask if my son was autistic when he was 12.

Very interesting. I dont think that we should assume that all non-verbal people with autism can learn - but it certainly goes to show that we shoudnt give up.
All those non-speaking cannot be assumed that they can get to become speaking, but that isn't the same as them being unable to learn language, to read and write it or use it in a different mode expressively like sign language.
If my neurology had been just a bit more different for dyspraxia, and/or auditory processing, I'd likely have been effectively non-speaking, because I wouldn't have been able to make it sufficiently intelligible. It doesn't mean I'd be unable to learn language, but the speaking and audio processing of it would put a damper on things.
My speech still isn't perfectly clear, as an adult, even though I had several years of speech therapy. You can't reliably control that which you cannot reliably sense.
For all parents of nonverbal level 3 autism. I’m a psychologist and I used NeurOptimal on him with attachment therapy and in one week he went from 2 words to sentences now after 30 sessions he is having complex conversations. I have only this one story to tell as I don’t normally work with autism but as a parent it’s worth looking at. I told the mum the beginning I didn’t know if it would help so I’d give her 3 free session. It’s been life changing. Also I stopped all discussions in front of him as if he wasn’t thee or if he was a problem. Thi also had a dramatic affect . The mother has also used diet which ended fits and calmed outbursts. The amazing woman in England who does intensive communication. Entering into their language helped enormously.

He's got plenty of time to develop :) just use it well, there are different speech therapies, you may also look into Nemechek protocol, especially fish oil for Omega-3 fatty acids

Thank you for posting this video Will! I actually potty trained my son with a potty song so I can see how songs helped you! My son is 5 and half and loves it when I identify items in his baby books. But he has a hard time understanding that cups can be different but..still a cup 😆 I guess practice makes perfect. I would love to hear if you had/have any feeding or eating issues/preferences and how your mom helped you. I know everyone is different but you give me hope.
Oh nice! What song did you use? That's awesome how you have that connection with your son when it comes to identifying his favorite things. I can see how he can have a hard time differentiating cups since we autistic people are black and white. According to my Mom, I was actually one of the easiest eaters. I still do hate squash and cream of wheat.
@@williamwehrli7486 We used the Daniel Tiger songs "when you have to go potty" it would snap him out of his little bubble if he was playing and hadn't gone potty in a while. Wow that's awesome that you were a good eater. She was lucky!!! My son hacks and gags when I present him with new foods. It's sad because if he would just try it he might like it. I wish I knew what is causing him to limit his diet.
Hello, ABA therapy, your child qualifies for grants if you live in the United States. Also, Speak oil, smoothies with leafy green veggies/ fruits, kefir for probiotics, Empowerplus powder supplement designed for the central nervous system or one that you choose that provides nutrients for the brain. Your mom was amazing. She never give up. I also think stress factored into some of your verbal progress. When your mom moved away from your dad, you seemed to respond somewhat better to your mom’s efforts.
Auntie Maryhelen makes an excellent point. The stress was a big part of your non verbalness. I was also able to be more structured with you which helped you with managing your stress.
I had no idea the stress contributed to my nonverbal state. Glad we were able to get past that!

My question is, when you say nonverbal, does that mean you didn't speak at all? My granddaughter does udder some words like "Mommy" and "Stop." Her vocabulary for the most part, going on 3 years is still non existent.

I did many of these methods when my son was growing up. He now fully understands about 95% of what is being said. When it comes to speech he knows te words but does not want to use them . He will repeat if i prompt but will not say them on his own unless its something he really really wants. Any suggestions on how to et him to talk over using gestures. Thank you
